“Know any… do I?” Shara let out a long-suffering sigh and starting playing arpeggios until she rolled her notes into a bouncing sort of beat that mimicked the way the band played. And then she began to sing, heartfelt and openly, though it probably helped that she was in a different room and no one was actively watching her play and sing.

Like a long lonely stream
I keep runnin’ towards a dream
Movin’ on, movin’ on
Like a branch on a tree
I keep reachin’ to be free
Movin’ on, movin’ on

‘Cause there’s a place in the sun
Where there’s hope for everyone
Where my poor restless heart’s gotta run
There’s a place in the sun
And before my life is done
Got to find me a place in the sun

Like an old dusty road
I get weary from the load
Movin’ on, movin’ on
Like this tired troubled earth
I’ve been rollin’ since my birth
Movin’ on, movin’ on

‘Cause there’s a place in the sun
Where there’s hope for everyone
Where my poor restless heart’s gotta run
I know there’s a place in the sun
And before my life is done
Got to find me a place in the sun

You know when times are bad
And you’re feeling sad
I want you to always remember

Yes, there’s a place in the sun
Where there’s hope for everyone
Where my poor restless heart’s gotta run
I know there’s a place in the sun

Nadine looked at Micah with a hint of awe as she tore the greens up into the bowl. Yes Shara played very well, but it was her voice. There was honesty in that voice.

~Shara & Nadine

Micah nodded in time to the music and smiled slightly as his wife sang in their living room. When she was done, he said without looking up “That. That right there. That’s why I married ya. You got a voice like Joni Mitchell, you know that?” and he looked at Nadine. “Joni Mitchell… you know her?”

Micah

Nadine slowly shook her head. “No, I don’t think so?” But definitely now she’d be looking her singer up.

From the great room, Shara called out, “And here I thought you married me for my rockin’ bod and high proficiency with weapons…” And she began to play something made up, just riffing on chord progressions.

~Shara & Nadine

“I did, but I gotta have a fall back plan for retirement! You’ll be the singer and I’ll be the manager.” he said with a laugh. He looked at Nadine and said softly “Most beautiful women ever.” and he grinned and began heating a pan with butter in it.

Micah

“Please tell me that you’re not going to be one of those pushy managers, because if so i might just drown you in the creek,’ Shara tossed back as she began to lay a classical Terran piece. Eyes closed, her fingers seemed to know exactly where to move, even after all these years. All she could say was that the music was embedded in her very body. She was just a temporary host for it as it made its way out into the world again. The piece (Schubert & Liszts Ständchen) was quieter but bright as at the same time there was deeper depth in it.

Nadine grinned at him, enjoying the banter between the two. There was something so… free about it, easy. Cutting the tomatoes into bite sized pieces, she glanced over at Micah now and again, thinking about what he had said about Shara. About the deep pain that apparently dogged her every step. About the PTSD she had admitted to be struggling with. As she glanced out of the kitchen at the woman at the piano, she felt… connected to her. She didn’t know why yet, but maybe her own pain allowed her a glimpse into Shara’s world.

“It’s like she’s an entirely different person while playing,” she observed quietly to Micah, studying his reaction to his wife’s music.

Micah smiled softly and said “Naw… she’s herself when she’s playing. She’s someone different when she’s not.” and he looked at her. There was a sense of hurt in his eyes. Not for himself, but for her. As if he understood her pain in a way even Shara didn’t quite consciously grasp. The look was gone as the music flowed and he looked over at her and smiled a smile of pure joy. “Shara… I think I love you playing that high-brow stuff even more than Stevie Wonder.” and he laughed. “But if ya really wanna impress, nobody does it like Ray Charles!” and he looked at Nadine. “Watch yourself.” and he slid a fish filet into the searing hot pan.
