“Please tell me that you’re not going to be one of those pushy managers, because if so i might just drown you in the creek,’ Shara tossed back as she began to lay a classical Terran piece. Eyes closed, her fingers seemed to know exactly where to move, even after all these years. All she could say was that the music was embedded in her very body. She was just a temporary host for it as it made its way out into the world again. The piece (Schubert & Liszts Ständchen) was quieter but bright as at the same time there was deeper depth in it.

Nadine grinned at him, enjoying the banter between the two. There was something so… free about it, easy. Cutting the tomatoes into bite sized pieces, she glanced over at Micah now and again, thinking about what he had said about Shara. About the deep pain that apparently dogged her every step. About the PTSD she had admitted to be struggling with. As she glanced out of the kitchen at the woman at the piano, she felt… connected to her. She didn’t know why yet, but maybe her own pain allowed her a glimpse into Shara’s world.

“It’s like she’s an entirely different person while playing,” she observed quietly to Micah, studying his reaction to his wife’s music.

OOC: Here’s a great example of the piece Shara’s playing:

Micah smiled softly and said “Naw… she’s herself when she’s playing. She’s someone different when she’s not.” and he looked at her. There was a sense of hurt in his eyes. Not for himself, but for her. As if he understood her pain in a way even Shara didn’t quite consciously grasp. The look was gone as the music flowed and he looked over at her and smiled a smile of pure joy. “Shara… I think I love you playing that high-brow stuff even more than Stevie Wonder.” and he laughed. “But if ya really wanna impress, nobody does it like Ray Charles!” and he looked at Nadine. “Watch yourself.” and he slid a fish filet into the searing hot pan.

Nadine stepped to the side for a moment to avoid any splattering. She was still considering Micah’s statement and trying to see if it made sense. Maybe she didn’t know Shara well enough yet, but she was trying to mesh seemingly incongruous ideas together and understand Shara. But maybe that was it, maybe the woman was just, in part, unknowable. Hmmm, well, she had a couple days or so to figure it out.

“I’m definitely not Ray Charles, but I think I got something else that will work,” Shara called out as she moved into a swing blues set of chord progressions before beginning a new song, her body swaying with the rhythm.

“For once in my life I have someone who needs me
Someone I’ve needed so long
For once unafraid I can go where life leads me
And somehow I know I’ll be strong

For once I can touch what my heart used to dream of
Long before I knew
Someone warm like you
Could make my dreams come true

For once in my life I won’t let sorrow hurt me
Not like it’s hurt me before
For once I have someone I know won’t desert me
I’m not alone anymore

For once I can say
This is mine you can’t take it
As long as I know I have love I can make it
For once in my life I have someone who needs me.”

During the instrumental solo, Shara’s leapt into a sweeping set of progressions.

“At least for once I can say
This is mine you can’t take it
As long as I know I have love we can make it
For once in my life I have someone
For once in my life I have someone
For once in my life I have someone who needs me”

She finished with a flourish and Nadine stopped to clap, a wide grin on her face, shaking her head slightly. While she knew she had had know idea what she was walking into when she had stepped into the school, nothing had prepared her for these two people. And she was pretty sure she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Micah was grinning from ear to ear and singing along with her, but under his breath… like he was self-conscious about it or something. But when Shara finished, he put two metal fingers in his mouth and a high pitched and loud whistle erupted and he laughed and laughed. “Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!!!! Goddamn but I love that woman!!” he yelled and smiled at her.

“Thank you, thank you. You’re a great audience! Now you just hang tight now and I’ll be back after a little break,” Shara said with a throaty chuckle.

Nadine laughed aloud. He certainly was an expressive man, eve if like Shara there were definitely depths to him she may never see.

Turning back to the fish, he seared the filets to a light golden brown and took them out and set them aside. “Now then baby girl… go grab that glass bottle that right inside that big metal door over yonder. Thats the walk in cold storage. Bottles’ just on tha left.”

“On it,” Nadine said, slipped over to the cooler and grabbing the requested bottle.

He took the bottle and poured the cream from the top into the skillet where it began heating and blending with the butter and remnants of the fish. He took the mushrooms, now thinly sliced and browned in butter, and slid them into the cream with onions, dill, and salt. He slowly and constantly stirred the contents until they had become a rich, thick, creamy mushroom sauce.

Meanwhile, Nadine tossed the salad in a little olive oil and some sort of nice vinegar she found, with just a sprinkle of salt and pepper to round it out.

“Here, get the salad plates ready if ya would please.” Micah said to Nadine as he slid the fish onto plates and then spooned sauce over the tops of each.

“Mhmmm,” she said as hunted for the salad plates in the cupboard Shara had been rifling in before.

Shara poked her head in. “I can set the table?”
