“As long as it doesn’t involve moonshine, we’re probably doing pretty good,” Shara quipped as she nestled her head against his. “Promise me it’s going to be okay?” she whispered. Today had been a lot… for everyone. But not so unlike that moment after visiting Faye in the brig and telling her she had been the one to help her escape from that Tal Shiar prison cell, everything felt off-kilter and she was struggling to find her footing. But Micah’s presence was solid and steady and she could admit to herself she needed that more than ever right now.

Micah held her close and said “Honey… Sha… I love you more than air. And I promise you that I will do everything in my power to make sure this is all ok. Now… let’s go to bed. And for once, I won’t put these moves on ya before hand.” and he grinned and clapped and did the worst impression of a burlesque dancer ever.

Micah

“Be still my heart,” she deadpanned before moving back to her trunk. Grabbing one item, she closed the lid and after a brief hesitation, didn’t lock it. There were no dangerous secrets in there, after all, just a life no one other person knew about. Yet.

She flung the brightly watercoloured blue scarf around her neck- it clashed horribly with her sundress- and proceeded towards and up the stairs. “So.. Risa. So one of my contacts I had for an assignment was on Risa and wouldn’t talk to anyone else. Now, he’d known me as a dancer named Candy Cane from Spaartag Four. Long red hair to my waist. So I had no real choice but to show up as Candy and next thing I know I’m the feature entertainment…”

A little while later, a text message from Faye was delivered to Shara. I was upset and confused, and I’m sorry if I was hurtful. I called Nadine. She’s really nice and we’ll be talking more. I even told her it was okay to come to the wedding. She looks like your döppleganger, you know. Had to do a double-take. I love you. ~Faye

Long after Micah had gotten the rest of the story about Risa and how she came to have such a lovely scarf (there was a high stakes poker game and a case of mistaken identity used to her advantage involved), Shara had finally fallen asleep. But she woke, as often she did at some random point in the night. No nightmare, just.. awake. So she padded down the stairs to grab a glass of water and out of habit checked her messages. She smiled. Gods she loved that girl. She knew full well Faye still didn’t get how much progress she had made in the last couple of years, but it was extraordinary. The Faye from before the Tal Shair would never have apologized first. Never. Her temper burned hot but held long lasting embers unless something out them out. Finally it was Faye herself who was putting them out. And each time she thought she couldn’t be any prouder of her second-born child, Faye went and proved her wrong. Well, and good.

~Shara

Micah’s eyes stayed closed and his breathing regular as Shara got up and went downstairs. He didn’t move, didn’t follow… she was still processing and, like him, alone time was necessary. He listened to the water fill the glass, the chirp of a messages being opened, the sigh of relaxation from Shara. He smiled to himself and made one single, silent movement… he opened the window at the head of the bed enough the sounds of the night forest could be heard and the cool night air came in.

“I love you, wife.” he said normally, just loud enough she could hear it, and he went right back to sleep.

Micah

Her gaze flicked to the stairs and a tender smile pulling at her mouth. “I love you too, husband,” she said, though her voice was softer. Sipping her water, Shara sat back on the sofa and gazed down at the trunk. On a whim she set down the glass and opened the trunk, digging quietly for one item.

At the base of the trunk was a paper envelope 229mm x 162mm (a strange thing in this day and age) thick with items. It was still fairly flat, but the middle was rounded. Shara opened the flap and carefully dumped out the contents on to a pillow next to her, printed photographs spilling on top and over the edges. It had been a strange whim that surfaced not long after she had left Midos, but the pregnant teenager hit her nesting phase and suddenly had a desire to have mementos on hand. So she scoured sources for images of places and people, and on her one and only trip back to Midos, she gathered copies of a few family photos too. Those ones she had painstakingly tracked down had been lost to the Dominion attack on Tracken, but the beauty of being an Intelligence officer was that you more often than not found a way to find these things. And so her collection began anew.

Hunting for a specific one, she held it between her fingertips and smirked. A teenage Shara and Curtis at a high school dance. She wore a dark purple satin gown. It had been a bright moment in what had been a rough few years. The first time she could truly remember smiling since her mother had died. Two kids, full of hopes and dreams and ambitions. A lifetime ago. Guess I better give you a heads up too, huh? She didn’t want to blindside Curtis, though a tiny bitter part of her thought he deserved it. But she knew better. He had made the right choice for him, and so had she.

Shara set the photo on the coffee table and gathered up the other photos. She left the open packet beside the image of her and Curtis and took one final sip of water before heading back up to bed, snuggling into her husband. Tomorrow was another day. She had her meeting, which was making her anxious, truth be told, and the random call from Admiral Jackass hadn’t helped. But hey, the fourth day of her time here in Tennessee was likely to be just as eventful, so bring it on. After all, she was home.

~Shara

Micah held her close as she came back, and kept her close as they slept.

The morning light came over the trees and through the window and Micah took a breath as he woke up. He blinked and looked at Shara and smiled. “I’m gonna go make coffee. Be right back.” and he got up and threw on his pants and walked downstairs. He went into the kitchen and started the stove and coffee pot, then he walked out the front door and walked to Vanessa. Opening the hatch, he stuck his head in and yelled “Hey, Nadine! Wakey-wakey! If you’re like your ma, you’re gonna need coffee! It’s on the stove! Shake yer tail-feathers ‘fore she drinks it all!” and he closed the hatch and went inside the house.
