Stories abound about it. Tales of horror… fear… and death. Ships lost… with all hands. If star charts were still made like the maps of ages past, most certainly would the place be labeled ‘hic sunt dracones’… ‘Here be Dragons’…

The Cantreken Nebula.

A veritable ship’s graveyard responsible for dozens of lost ships and countless lost lives over the past two hundred and twenty years since it was discovered, the hard way, by a Vulcan science vessel. The entire region was a designated no-travel zone by all known governments and civilizations… but some still try to shave off the ten days of travel at warp required to go around the massive and deadly location by cutting across the peripheral boundaries.

Most fail.

Many studies have been done on the nebula to try and find out the source of the massive ion-plasma storms that erupt without warning from it. Only one was partially successful. A Tellarite scout ship, adrift and without power, was pulled into the nebula and seemingly lost forever. Except it wasn’t. The ship instead found a station set inside the nebula. It was old, hundreds of years. Using the safe place to repair their vessel, the Tellarites managed to escape the nebula and in doing so drew the attention of the USS Nightshade, an Intelligence vessel that was tracking the Tellarites for various Intel-related reasons. The Nightshade took the Tellarites into custody, informed their superiors of the station… and then all knowledge simply vanished like smoke in the wind.

The so called Cantreken Station… a wholly unacknowledged and highly experimental station designed by the Tholians some four hundred years ago… sat inside an impenetrable and perpetual ion-plasma storm inside the nebula. It was re-discovered by the survey ship Eleanor Rigsby forty years ago right before she was destroyed by said ion-plasma storms, but who sent back a single image before her destruction. Since that time, Star Fleet Intelligence had kept it completely isolated from general knowledge. Exactly one thousand people in all of the Federation knew about it. Nine hundred and ninety-three live on the station itself. One is the Admiral in charge of Special Projects, one is Agent Blue, one is Agent Pikelsimer , one is the current President of the Federation, two are members of the Vulcan Science Council… and one is the Director of Star Fleet Intelligence.

And now the crew of the Asimov would learn of it as well as the ship closed to within four hours of the No-Travel Boundary.

GM

“Captain, our current course takes us beyond a no-travel line.” The helm officer reported with concern.
“Understood. Continue along the present course.” Sara said. There was an air of tension on the bridge, which seemed to stem from the lack of shared information. Sara looked to the newcomer Agents for some signal, or something to signify that she could tell the crew what was going on.

-Captain Sara Kiernan, CO

Bethany stood at the security/tactical station and looked at the status of the ships offensive and defensive systems. Based on what little they were told, she wasn’t expecting to need torpedos or phasers to get to the station, but she was quite sure the shields and deflector would be essential if they were to survive the trip. The bridge was tense, but Bethany lived, breathed, ate tense.

Gadi, CoS

Sitting in her chair next to Captain, the First Officer looked very intently, almost angrily at the screen as if the nebula they were approaching had wronged her. But she quickly realised what she was doing and shifted her expression into a more neutral one before glancing towards Blue and Pikelsimer as well. “Is there anything we should know or do before we arrive at the nebula or are we just going to fly into a no-travel zone and hope for the best,” she asked a little flatly. She knew she was not being a great example for the crew right now, but she was trying her best to keep professional, to keep her own feelings out of this. She wasn’t very good at that right now, though, and fully aware of that. And yet she didn’t know what to do about it.

~Cmdr. Enai, XO

Pikelsimer said “We have secured permission to enter the No-Travel area, Commander. No alerts should go out. And as far as the nebula itself is concerned, Ma’am, the Lieutenant has that handled I believe.”

Blue nodded and said “Yes, sir. Ma’am, if you would direct Operations to shift shields on a rotating frequency modulation-” and he walked over and handed her a PaDD with a complex mathematical formula on it, “- following that equation, it will allow us to enter the outermost edges of the nebula’s ion-plasma field.”

Taking the PaDD from Blue, Siadra briefly glanced at it, but quickly gave up trying to understand it. She had enough knowledge and understanding of physics and engineering to pass the command training without problems. But that’s were it ended and this equation was definitely way over her head. But she knew that the Engineers would have no problem making the needed modifications.

Pikelsimer then said “And at that time, Comms… you will broadcast the following message on all frequencies.” He lifted a PaDD and tapped it. The bridge was filled with a shrill, alien, almost hostilly artificial noise. He made a face and tapped the device and it shut off. “Tholian, fo those of you never heard it. Not pleasant. Loosely translated it says ‘We ring the Devil’s Doorbell and seek entrance to Hell.’… or something to that effect. I never knew rocks were religious, personally.” and he chuckled. “That will allow us to proceed into the nebula a bit further.”

GM

seems a bit dramatic, as passphrases go. Sara thought. “Alright. That course of action is so far acceptable.” Remaining impassive as the CO should in situations like this was becoming difficult. She was ever more concerned for the safety and sanity of the crew over the coming who could possibly know how long.

-Captain Sara Kiernan, CO

Gadi didn’t seem to mind the sound of the Tholian vocals. She couldn’t speak it, but she did recognize it. Pikelsimer’s translation drew a small curve to the corners of her mouth, how....interesting. Gadi checked the status of the shields one more time to make sure they were at full strength and efficiency before the equation was entered and the actually entered the nebula.

Gadi, CoS

Siadra felt a shiver run down her spine at the sound of the Tholian message, but managed to keep her expression calm and professional. As much as she disliked the whole sound of this mission, she had to lead by example and that was to do her best to make sure they’d be successful and make it out alive. After another brief glace at the PaDD in her hand, the First Officer tapped her combadge and said, =/\= Enai to Engineering. In order to make it safely into the nebula we need to shift the shields on a rotating frequency modification. I’m going to send you the formula now and please report back once all modifications are completed. =/\=

~Cmdr. Enai, XO

Si’Rek looked at the formula and let out a low whistle. It was complex as almost anything, but there was an elegance to it as well. “Commander, Engineering definitely going to have to assist in this. The power draw for some of these higher outputs will need us to be mindful of overloading the shield modulators.”

Si’Rek, Ops

Paddy, who had been leaning against the wall at the back of the Bridge stepped towards the viewscreen addressing Agent Pikelsimer, “What do we know about sentient life in this area, Agent?”

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

Having monitored the situation from her little office, Shara had made her way to the bridge, if grudgingly. Stepping out of the lift, her eyes gazed on the nebula before them and a shiver crept down her spine. “Been a long time since I’ve been surfing,” she said quietly. This place they were going into was different from The Badlands, but only on technicalities. It was still just as dangerous, still just as tricky to navigate and still just as much a haven. And try as she might, Shara couldn’t shake the similitude between her past and everything they were doing here. A detail there, a plan here- it all seemed to be coalescing into a perfect mishmash of her life up till this point.

She hated it.

But her role was key and thus Calloway pushed it all away as best she could so that she could be the officer and Intelligence agent they desperately needed her to be.

Commander Calloway, CIO

Sara watched Shara enter the bridge. *Good. She’s here. Her talk with Siadra must’ve done some good.” Sara nodded her as she greeted Calloway “Welcome to the bridge Commander. Any advice to share for traversing territory like this?”

-Captain Sara Kiernan, CO

Shara wobbled her head slightly. “Yes and no. In my Maquis days, navigating the Badlands became second-nature, but I was less experienced with it then some. The problem here is that we’re entering unpredictable space,” she said as she approached the helm and leaned against the wall next to the viewscreen, focusing her attention on the officer who they were trusting their lives with to make it through the nebula intact. “You can’t anticipate the things that will knock us about and flip us around. The best you can do is treat it like surfing. Catch a wave and ride. Let the current that form because of the eddies and storms take us where they want to go and work our way eventually towards our target. And then when we get close enough, hop out of the current and brace ourselves for a rough final run at the station. And… hope we make it.”

Commander Calloway, CIO

“The insight is appreciated Commander. Perhaps you can assist at the helm, and help us ‘surf’.” Sara replied with a gentle smile.

A few moments later NE Karlsonn called up to the bridge =/\=The shield modulations have been input. We’re ready when you are.=/\=

-Captain Sara Kiernan/NE Karlsonn

Gadi watched the shield display on her console as it updated with the improved modulations and watched as everything cycled through to update the readings. With a quick, instinctive few taps on her controls she initiated the shields. “Raising shields, Cpt.”

Gadi, CoS

Paddy offered a reassuring smile to Commander Calloway and said, “Good luck everyone,” offering the same smile around the Bridge.

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

Si’Rek took a deep breath and said “Shield modulations… active. But It’s very strange. The formula is correct, but shield strength won’t ever go above 21%.” and he looked back at Pikelsimer and Blue as if they were possibly in error… or just insane.

Si’Rek, Ops

Sara, without breaking her gaze from the viewscreen said to Blue “Well? Did we enter it wrong or is there something else of which we were previously not informed?”

-Captain Sara Kiernan, CO
