“And this is the first one that you aren’t going into either blind, alone, or both. Try and give me some credit, Sha… You should know that I would never… ever… put you in a no-win situation. And you should also know that of anyone you know… I am absolutely the most devious when it comes to getting my way. And my way is everyone coming back from this… well, everyone except the Shadow Syndicate.” and he grinned slightly.

Micah

Hands still planted on her hips, Shara’s head bowed, shoulders sinking with weariness. “In the conference room? The flashback? I was getting Faye to the shuttle so she could get free. She was drugged out of her mind, Micah. I had to get her to a place where she could function enough to fly to safety and I knew once the shuttle left, she had to do it all on her own. I couldn’t do anything else to help her.” She shook her head, eyes closed and directed to the floor. “The nightmares and flashbacks began the night I slipped out of the facility and took refuge with a sympathizer of the Reunification Movement. The woman was the one who helped me get messages back and forth to my uppers. Twice she was so worried about me, she tried to wake me from the nightmares and I mistook her for someone trying to hurt Faye. I was surprised she didn’t kick me out of her house, but she seemed to understand a bit. But I guess when you’re whole society goes to shit you know a thing or two about trauma. Whole swathes of Romulan society were in desperate straights and here was the Tal Shiar going about things as if they still had any control over it.” She opened her eyes but they couldn’t focus on any one thing, blurred with tears. “I don’t know how to keep it all at bay. I felt that control slip in the conference room and it feels so hard to find again. And that makes me a liability and I don’t know what to do about it.”

~Shara

Micah stepped forward and put his hands on her shoulders. “You let it out, Sha. Right now. Let it out with me. And when you’re done and get yourself back, we will talk about what’s coming, just you and me. And if you need ta lose your shit again, then you lose it again. But right now, wife, we take care’a you and get this out. Ya hear?” He let go of her and went to his bag and pulled out a jar of clear liquid. He handed it to her and said “Here. Prime the pump. Let’s get this going so we can start working.”

Micah

There was tension between the relaxation and lack of inhibitions that a bit of alcohol could bring and that slippery path into drinking too much. Jar proffered, Shara eyed it, not sure if it was a blessing or a curse. But what were her options? Stay in this state of misery and cause possible irreparable harm during their mission, possibly getting people killed? Or indulge, drown her sorrows a little, and find her way through the deep dark that was closing in on her?

Reaching out, her hand trembled and as her fingers touched the glass, it was like a jolt of sharp energy stabbed through her body. Shara all but leapt back, her eyes wide, head shaking back and forth. “No. No, no no. I can’t, no, I… I.. just…” She couldn’t catch her breath, couldn’t find her words. It was all coming in too fast and furiously. There was even a thread of panic, wondering what Micah was making of his wife’s complete and utter meltdown. Perhaps he had thought he’d seen the worst of it back in Tennessee, but that had been nothing to those months after she made it back to the Federation. There were but a handful of people who had seen her in this state before. it wasn’t pretty to witness, but it felt even worse to experience. Standing before him, she sank to her knees, fingertips digging into the carpet, seeking something solid as she tried to force herself to breathe. Just breathe.

~Shara

Micah dropped to his knees in front of her, jar set aside, and he put his hands on her shoulders. “Easy, wife… easy… just breathe… let it out… I got you, Sha… breathe honey… breeeeathe… you got this… easy…” He kept talking softly, encouraging, not directing. He kept his hands on her so there was the comforting pressure, but nothing restraining. He watched her closely, keeping an eye out for hyperventilating and shock. “It’s okay, Sha… shhhh… I got you…”

Micah

Air slipped in, staccato sounds echoing in her own ears and as she pushed air out, her whole body trembled. Head bowed, Shara had closed her eyes, shutting out that bit of sensory input that was too much right now. The memories sat there like little balloons hovering above her and she wanted to push them away or even pop them, but she knew that wasn’t the answer. “I don’t.... know.. how to… do this…” she gasped, forcing herself to draw in an even deeper breath, but it was forced it was almost painful.

~Shara

“Yeah you do, love… yeah you do… just go with it. You know fighting it won’t help… just roll with the punches, hun… breathe… easy… I know this is hard as hell, and I’m so sorry, Sha. But it’s gotta be done. And when it is, we’ll go back home for a few weeks and you can play your piano. Maybe we can get the kids there… never know. Just ease through it, doll. Its gonna be alright…”

Micah

Micah was one of the few people she could ever bring herself to break down like this in front of, and maybe that in part was her answer. He was here. Who knew if they’d make it through this, but at least for the moment he was here with her. Shifting her weight forward, Shara all but collapsed against her, breaths ragged and cheeks damp. The panic shifted slightly and she sobbed more. What was with her and crying lately? She swore she’d cried more in the last few months than she had her entire life.

And maybe that was the point.

Pulling her left shoulder inwards, she was nestled against Micah so he was all but cradling her and for the time being it was enough. But the words slipped out, “I’ve missed you. I’d gotten used to sleeping beside you.”

~Shara

Micah held her close and smiled. “Of course you have… we’re married, after all.” and he chuckled. “But it’s nice to know you noticed I wasn’t there. I’ll be honest… I figured you’d have been sprawled out all over your bed relishing not having my butt encroaching on your side. And me yanking the covers back when I got cold because someone is a blanket hog.” and he chuckled.
