Giving a warm nod to the engineers working around the deck, Paddy grinned and said, “Well, which part of the ship haven’t you seen yet? I’m no expert, but I’m happy tto help where I can.”

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

Asimov is only 7 decks. I wouldn’t be worth much in my position if I wasn’t already familiar with her. Unless you want to go crawling around the Jefferies tubes? But personally, I’m not feeling up for that kind of hike at the moment. Where’s your favorite place in the ship?”

Gadi, CoS

Paddy smiled whistfully, “Well, when I was on the farm, I used to stargaze with my family a lot. I feel like it’s a great pasttime. Would you care to join me at the nearest observation window?”

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

“I would, lead on Paddy.” Though Bethy was familiar with the layout of the ship and location of strategic and essential systems leisure spots weren’t on her list of important locations to learn immediately. But such information also told her where she could find people if it became necessary to do a foot to ground search. Just like she’d asked the XO about her daughter. Combadges could be tracked, but they could also fall off, become damaged, or purposely left behind.

Gadi, CoS

Paddy grinned and lead Bethy over to the nearest window, “Clear night out there isn’t it?”

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

Bethy grinned. “Isn’t it always? Nothing quite beats the the image of cloud whisps across the stars though. Looks like a curtain or a veil being drawn back, giving you glimpse of the heavens “

Gadi, CoS

Paddy grinned, “I never took you for the philisophical type Commander?”

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

Bethy shrugged, “Philosophy is a big part of what I do. Philosophy guides the formation of ethics and morals. Those morals guide my actions in the field. I have my orders, but at the end of the day I have to be willing to live with the moral and ethical implications of the decisions I make. And out there, I don’t have the luxury of contacting a superior to make that call. It’s all me.” Bethany nodded out the window. Her ever present smile slipping just a bit. “But clouds in the sky? That’s just a memory, not philosophy.” She was quiet for several minutes, “Do you ever miss real sunlight, Paddy?”

Gadi, CoS

“I think of home often,” Paddy said with a grin, taking in the wash of black in front of both of them; some stars seemed to be winking at the two officers, “In fact, I created a holodeck program of the farm, in the event I ever got homesick, just important to remember not to trap myself inside.”

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

“Home-away-from-home, then. It’s always important to remember where we came from, why we do what we do.” Bethany would never risk such a program. Homesickness could be deadly. The pinning for where you want to be but you are not. One slip in control, or persona, and that was it. Bethy pointed to the far right, “See that bare hint of green to the black, at 5 o’clock from it that bright yellow star? That’s Beta Zeta, the sun of Betazed. Then over there,” Bethy pointed off to the left of them, “Those three red stars, if you focus you can see the yellow of Sol.”

Gadi, CoS

“And if you follow the second star to the right and head straight on until morning you’ll reach Neverland,” Paddy replied with a chuckle, “Your astrology knowledge is quite something, Commander.”

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

“Not so impressive, Paddy. Sometimes you learn things out of necessity.” Her gaze was far away staring out at the stars. Pick a point, keep your eye on it, and fly and don’t stop till you get away. How often do people wish for simpler times, a simpler life. To remain a child, safe in their parents arms? She’d been 6 during the occupation, but Bethany never wanted to go back, she knew better. Her parents kept her safe, but it didn’t always work out that way. The metaphor was more accurate than Paddy realized. Her parents had picked a star and flew on till morning, well several mornings till they returned to Earth. “Think happy thoughts and you can fly away to safety? A safe place for all the lost children?”

Gadi, CoS

Paddy whistled thoughtfully, “Barrie was ahead of time back in those days, despite the problematic depictions. Know you can always be in a safe space with me Commander,” he smiled warmly and lost himself in the starscape for a moment.

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

“Most great literature stands the test of time. History always repeats, no matter how much we might fight against it,” she mused as she watched the stars. After a moment Bethany turned her attention back. “You’re sweet Paddy.” Then she began walking again, heading toward the turbolift. “I have a midnight surprise inspection and then an early whole departmental meeting at 0630.” It had been a nice evening with good conversation, but, for Bethany at least, it was time to call it a night.

Gadi, CoS

“Calling it a night, eh Commander?” Paddy grinned, “Good call, but I hope we can do this again sometime soon?”

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-
