“Okay, so I’ve pieced together from the snippets that you and Shara eloped unexpectedly and that you’ve not known each other very long. But how did you she was it? I’m not the most impulsive person so in full honesty it kind of boggles my mind,” she said with a grin.

Micah laughed and began pulling some wild onions. “Well… sometimes you just know things. I stepped off that transporter pad on the Manhattan and saw her and just… damn. She hit me like a bag of hammers. I knew then and there I was gonna be with her. Now the marriage thing… that was… well… unexpected. And there is the fact neither of us know who asked who or how it happened, soooo…” and he laughed heartily.

Micah

“Later I think I need that full story,” Nadine said with a shake of her head before she gazed at Micah intently. “”And I love how you talk about her. I hope to find someone again who loves me the way you do her,” she said quietly as she returned her attention back to the ground and possible items for dinner.

“Stop looking, kiddo. You’ll never find what you are looking for unless you stop looking. Think about it like what we have done here. Did we come out looking for what we found? Nope, we just found it. Thats nature, Nadine. Don’t try to make it what you think you want or need. Let nature give you what you need, and want what sh gives you. Pretty simple formula for happiness right there.” and he threw the onions in and looked around. He then looked at her and said “So tell me about that boy of yours. Think he would liked it out here?” he asked.

Micah

As she cast her gaze over the landscape,” Nadine smiled. “Yeah, he would have loved it out here. We lived in the city and we went to parks a lot, but he was never more happy than when he was running through fields. He was begging me to let him climb a tree not long before…” Eyes fixed on the way ahead, it was momentarily like he was there. Swallowing, her mind cleared and she looked over at Micah as they moved. “Joshua was such a bright child. As i smart yes, but just so… joyful. Big smiles and goofy giggles. He’s probably have climbed a tree here and stayed up there for days if you let him.” Yes it was hard, but people rarely asked her about Josh, and she remembered how nice it felt to talk about him, about what he had brought to her life.

Micah smiled. He was no shrink by any stretch, but one of the advantages of living a life of deception and manipulation… you learned how to tell what people needed and wanted. “He sounds like my brother Liam. He was the same way. He’d take off into the woods and be gone days on end. Come wandering out with some feral raccoon or a bobcat cub and ask ‘Can we keep it?’. We’d always laugh and Ma would must shake her head and make him put it back.” Micah chuckled at the memory. “Yeah… he was the only sibling ‘a mine I think I woulda liked when we grew up.”

Micah

“I wanted to move back to Portland much earlier, before the accident. I could tell Josh would have loved being out there. But my ex’s parents had a house in the Hamptons and we used to go out there in the summer, sometimes just Josh and I if his dad was working and then he’d join us on the weekends.” Nadine quirked her head in his direction as they walked. “Did you and Liam not grow up together?” she asked, hesitating, unsure if it was an okay question or not.

Micah smiled and said “He died when we were kids. He was nine and I was… six, I think. Here… follow me.” and he began walking.

Soon the sound of rushing water could be heard in the distance, and a few minutes later they stepped out onto a wide, flat rock over which flowed a large creek or small river. Just to their right, the water cascaded over a ledge. Micah led them to the edge by the waterfall. “Careful, it can be slick.” he said cautiously. “Right here… Liam was right about here when he fell.” He pointed over the side. Below, almost thirty meters down, was a pool with large rocks visible. His voice was barely audible over the water, and his eyes were far away. “He never yelled. He was just there one second, gone the next. I was fishing up yonder. He was here trying to catch frogs. I looked over and he smiled and waved. I looked back a few seconds later… and he was gone. I looked around for a bit, thought he was playing games as he did. Then… looked over. There he was…” Micah said, his eyes fixed on the spot. “But he didn’t suffer… and that’s a good thing.” He looked at Nadine and said “Maybe your boy and my brother met somewhere and are running around the woods together… bet they’d have a time, wouldn’t they?” He smiled, but the tears welled up and he wiped them away. He then looked at Nadine again. “Some loss just never goes away… and thats okay. ‘Cause that means the person we lost was special. And they are important. Never shy away from that.” and he looked over the edge again for a moment.

“Ya know, when I finally kick off… I think I want my ashes scattered right here.” he said as if the thought just came to him.
