Siadra nodded and smiled softly. “How are you and your family settling in so far? And how are you settling into being parents? If I remember correctly your twins were born about a month ago?” she asked with genuine interest, while hoping that she didn’t sound nose or was overstepping. Not to mention that she had to actively remind herself that the questions she was supposed to ask as First Officer were at least slightly different from those she’d ask during a boarding evaluation while she was a Counsellor.

“Quite well thank you.” Rovan grinned, “I was surprised they were allowed onto the ship myself, both of us were preparing for Allison and the kids to stay on the Starbase rather than be on board, although she’s quite a capable Science Officer in her own right and even though she’s not in the service any more I know she will be able to pay her way if needed.” Rovan paused slightly before continuing.

“A month, yes. Still fresh and I think after 18 months of being pregnant with Ktarian twins Allie is more than happy to be a devoted mother. It suits her, especially after what she went through before we found her on the Genesis and how she fitted right back into her big family back on Earth. Eventually, when I’ve finished building our house on the little planetoid I bought property on, she will move there with a few extended members of her family. For now though we didn’t want to be apart again with me going back to Duty.”

Siadra nodded here and there as she listened attentively, a soft smile playing across her face. “It’s good to have your partner and children with you so you can both be part of their lives and watch them growing up. Even if a Starfleet vessel, especially one like the Asimov maybe a little less safe at times than being planet-side somewhere,” she mused, her gaze drifting briefly towards her daughter.

Rovan nodded, his eyes following hers to the girl playing on the floor. “How old is she?” He asked the XO. “You have her with you here for the same reason, not wanting to be away from her at that age?”

“She is six,” Siadra replied with a tender smile. “That’s part of the reason, yes. And the only other option I have, apart from resigning from Starfleet, would be to leave her with either of her grandparents. I know they would raise her just as well I can and it’s probably selfish, but the thought of not having her with me … it breaks my heart,” she continued, her voice barely more than whisper. Even though she did a good job at hiding it, a hind of the sadness and longing she felt was still visible in her black eyes.
