Sara started a holodeck program she’d been working on for a couple weeks. It was always a good idea to offer the occasional idle diversion and this old earth holiday seemed opportune for just that. The holodeck was filled with an open field, at the back of which was a barn, with a banner on it that read ‘Haunted House’, there was a bar, and buffet, and more candy than was reasonable for the small population of children on the ship, and all of it wrapped in a perfect Autumn night sky.

Sara was dressed as a witch and she was a bit concerned about being in a costume, but she tried not to worry about it as she sent out an invitation to the entire crew. All Hands, this is the Captain. Now that I have your attention, there’s a Halloween party in Holodeck two, costumes optional but encouraged. Come one, come all!

-Sara Kiernan

Siadra hadn’t needed to ask Liara twice if she wanted to go to the Halloween party. So it was with a very excited six-year-old pulling on her hand that the First Officer entered the holodeck. Liara was dressed like an astronaut from the 21st century from Earth, with the helmet and all. Though with the visor open. After all: with the visor down she wouldn’t be able to eat sweets! Siadra on the other hand opted for a fictional character from Earth: Anne of Green Gables. Her wife and she had found that book during an vacation on Earth and had fallen in love with the story. So with her red hair braided in two pigtails, she was dressed in white dress made of muslin with lace, ruffles, puffed sleeves and all; including, of course, all the proper undergarments for the prefect late Victorian silhouette. Spotting the Captain, she bent forward and said, “Let’s say hello to Captain Kiernan and then we can have a look around, okay?” “Okay,” Liara nodded.

When they reached Sara, the little girl said, “I love your costume! Are you a witch?”

Sara looked down at Liara and smiled wide. “Well thank you! Yes I am.” She knelt down to Liara’s height. “And you’re… an astronaut, right?”

“Yes, I am!” Liara beamed and giggled.

“Hello Captain,” Siadra greeted the other woman with a soft laugh. “This is a wonderful idea. Thank you.”

Sara rose and said “I always liked a good Halloween party. And it’s always nice to have a little something for the crew and their families.” She gestured back to the rest of the space “Well I booked the holodeck for an obnoxious amount of time, perks of being the Captain, so enjoy yourselves!”

-Sara Kiernan

“I’m sure we will and I hope you will as well, Captain,” Siadra replied warmly.

Patrick McMillan loved Halloween. A party such as this took him back to his days at the Academy, the kinds of costumes that cadets would wear as a way of trying to make friends with their new classmates; sometimes even forging a different kind of relationship in the process. To that end, Paddy managed to utilise the replicators aboard the Asimov in order to recreate an old Borg drone costume, made from cloth instead of repurposed metal. As he crossed the threshold into the party room, he grinned at the sight of Liara, then deciding to bend down and say, “Good evening little one, I love this costume, I may have to assimilate it into the Collective.” He winked.

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

Liara’s dark eyes went wide as Paddy bend down towards her. Taking a step back, she hid behind her mother. Something that worked very well thanks to the late Victorian dress Siadra was wearing. After glancing briefly at the Counsellor and holding up a hand to indicate he should wait where he was, the First Officer turned around and knelt down so that she was on eye-level with her daughter. “Hey pumpkin,” she whispered soothingly. “It’s just a costume. Like yours and the Captain’s and my dress. It’s the counsellor, not a real Borg drone. You don’t have to be afraid of him. He is not going to hurt you or anyone else. Promise.” Normally she would have kissed Liara’s forehead, but because of the helmet that wasn’t possible. So instead she touched her nose with her index finger. “Are you okay?” Liara nodded and then took a deep breath.

Standing up again, Siadra turned around as Liara slipped her hand into hers. “Hello Counsellor,” both of them greeted Paddy and then Siadra added, “That is an impressive costume.”

Bethy used to love Halloween, dressing up pretending to be someone else. Now-a-days she thought it might be fun to actually go as herself since she spent so much time pretending. But that would spoil the fun and Bethy didn’t want to do that.

An unfamiliar woman entered the holodeck, straight rich auburn hair adorned with a silver moon circlet and sapphire blue eyes, with a silver armband on her left arm. She was wearing a short one shoulder navy blue chiton, with a wide silver sash cinched around her waist and silver gladiator sandals. She carried a silver bow with a silver dyed leather quiver full of arrows. Once the doors closed behind her a golden stag appeared at her side and followed her as she made her way over to the others.

Allison loved Halloween. And now she had children to celebrate it with. This was going to be fun. Choosing a good costume for herself was one matter. Choosing one for the twins was another matter entirely. But she figured it out eventually. Into the holodeck stepped a woman with long blonde hair - longer than really should be possible, braided and wrapped up to a more manageable level. She pushed a stroller - really the only way of getting the twins around reasonably now that they were toddling about. She’d watched these stages of growth in her relatives, but it was certainly a new experience for her for a couple of 4-month-olds to be toddling around like 1-year-olds. They didn’t like walking for long though, hence the stroller.

Allison had dressed them up in matching outfits, little purple dresses that matched her own, down to the sun motifs.

Visrian was woefully unversed in the Halloween tradition, but she couldn’t pass up an opportunity to dress up. Masquerade as a swashbuckling pirate or a knight in shining (but uncomfortable) armour? The possibilities were limitless! And she wouldn’t dare waste an ounce.

Parr trudged onto the holodeck with a counterfeit scowl. She wore an olive-drab tunic cinched by tattered leather and a sheathed sword. Her trousers, baggy and russet, were stuffed into humungous black boots. Fingerless gloves and intricate, faux-metal armbands adorned her arms. But it was neither her armbands nor her tunic that claimed the show. It was the ragged cape that flowed from her shoulders, tethered only by a meagre cord.

Heavy-footed and trying oh-so-hard to maintain her scowl, Visrian marched over and waved a quiet ‘hello’.

At the sight of the Security Chief coming into the party, Paddy grinned and sidled over to her, trying not to collide with anyone as the parts of his costume that stuck out of his uniform jacket rubbed up against bulkheads. When he finally made his way over, he grinned and said, “Good evening Commander, might we interest you in adding your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own?” He winked goodnaturedly.

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

Bethy looked over at the counselor wondering if he knew how that sounded. She was really glad neither of her mentors were around. They would have ‘unassimilated’ him already. The ever present grin widened at his wink. “Counselor, that is a rather loaded question. I’m not sure I know you well enough for that.” She looked his costume over, “That is a very good costume, Paddy. How are you tonight?”

After the sentence left his mouth, Paddy realised how what he had just said sounded, “Jaysus, I just made a right eejit of myself didn’t I?” Paddy noted the typical response to him becoming nervous, his Irish accent becoming more obvious, and tried to change the subject, “I’m well Commander, enjoying the party?”

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

Bethy shook her head and gently bumped a shoulder against Paddy’s, “No you didn’t. And I don’t know, I just got here. It’s been a long time since I celebrated Halloween.” Not to mention wear a costume just for fun. Bethany felt edgy, like she was operating on an adrenaline high, but there was no cause for it. She certainly couldn’t blame it on Paddy. She liked him well enough but the Borg costume wasn’t enough to get her pulse racing one way or the other. But she couldn’t figure out why she was feeling like she was about to get into a bar fight. “Should we get a drink at the bar, or gorge ourselves on candy?”

As more and more members of the crew arrived, Siadra and Liara wandered around the holodeck, greeting everyone in turn. It wasn’t long before they reached the buffet with all the sweets and Liara’s eyes went wide again. Though this time not in fear, but with excitement. Normally Siadra didn’t allow her more than one or two sweets per day, but she knew that this battle was lost before it even started. So all she said was, “Don’t eat so many sweets that you’ll feel sick, okay?” With an absent minded smile Liara nodded and then reached for one of her favourite sweets.

Noticing Siadra and her daughter she smiled and waved. Then on a small device she pulled from some unknown pocket that didn’t seem possible was a small device and with a few quick taps the golden stag at her side wandered over toward Liara. Shrinking slowly as it did so by the time it was a few feet away it was about waist high to the girl. It stopped a few feet away, gently and subtly attempting to engage the girl in play.

Liara’s whole face lit up with a wide smile as the stage wandered towards her and shrinking to the perfect size for her to play with him. The candy completely forgotten, she giggled softly and carefully reached out a hand to pet his beautiful head.

Siadra had waved back at Bethany and then silently mouthed ‘thank you’ as she other woman sent the stag towards her daughter to play with. It warmed her heart and made her feel relieved that so many of the crew tried to engage with her girl and make sure she was well and happy. It made everything easier and took one worry off her shoulders.

The stag was linked up to the ship’s AI and would respond and react based on Liara’s reactions. Bethany grinned at Siadra and then headed off to get a drink.

Allison wandered a little further into the room, glancing around and smiling. It was a lively party. She quietly watched Siadra and her daughter. A few more years and the twins might make good playmates for Liara - if they were all still on the Asimov at that point. She hoped they were, she was a little tired of moving around from one community to another so much.

“I think now might be a time to make a change,” Paddy said with a wink. The young man reached onto his arm patch and tapped a hidden button on his lapel. Instantaneously, Paddy’s outfit changed with a flash and was replaced with several holographic scars and what looked like a discoloured contact lens in one eye. He grinned, “Much better, Zombie Counsellor, at your service.” He tapped his lapel, “I owe Engineering for this portable holo-emitter.”

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

Bethy looked him over at him and laughed, “Very impressive Paddy. What other disguises do you have in there?” She was making her way toward the bar for water, a lot of water. The temperature was cool and crisp, but she felt hot and winded, like she’d been running. It was ridiculous.

Gadi, CoS

“Well, if you appreciate how the other half lives,” Paddy replied, again reaching across to his lapel for the holo-emitter once more. This time, the holographic projection of his costume changed again to reveal the familiar sight of what looked to be a Starfleet uniform. However, this uniform contained the insignia of the Terran Empire, the overlords of the Mirror Universe, Paddy grinned and crossed his right arm to his left in a salute gesture often used by denizens of the Terran Empire and proclaimed with mock pride, “HAIL THE EMPIRE!” He winked, “Now what were you saying about candy Commander?”

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

She laughed, “That is a very decent impression. I think you would convince them. As for candy..I hope they have my favorite. Though if I indulge too much, I will never hear the end from my officers. I may have to sneak it out. Wanna help?” As always Bethany was grinning and far less serious than someone of her history would be expected to be.

Sara heard the counselor’s declaration, and walked over. “Evening Counselor, Commander. Happy Halloween.” She couldn’t help but smile at that. “Enjoying yourselves?”

Paddy grinned, “Good evening ma’am, may I say that this party is a great way of raising morale. What have you come as this fine evening?”

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

Sara smiled wide. “A witch, counselor. None too daring or creative, but a staple of Halloween for sure. I’m glad the party is having the intended effect.”

Bethany smiled at the Cpt. “Good evening, Cpt. I am, it’s lovely. After I sneak some candy and a drink, I may try out the haunted house.” She was glad to see the Cpt in costume as well.

Gadi, CoS

“I can only hope I programmed it spooky enough. I can’t say I recognize your costume commander, though you’ve certainly gone to an impressive effort.”

-Sara Kiernan, CO trying to relax a bit

“I’m sure it will be perfectly tantalizing.” Bethany figured for herself it would be more comical than frightening, but she’d have fun either way. She glanced down at her costume. “Artemis, she is a goddess from Earth’s Ancient Greek civilization. Goddess of the Moon and the Hunt.”
