Micah moved away form Shara and said “Go. Sit. I got three more minutes till the sausages are done.” and he shooed her out of the kitchen.

“I’m here for the coffee,” Shara said, moving over and setting up the machine since it was clear her daughter was having a moment and unlikely to do so herself. “At least this is one thing you can’t find fault in. I know my way around a good cup of coffee,” she said as she pulled out a filter and set it in the basket.

Shara finished up and moved back to Nadine, pulling a chair out beside her. She said nothing, just gazed quietly, wondering if she had gone too far.

Eventually, Nadine turned her head, meeting Shara’s pale grey-blue eyes. “I’ve been wondering most of my life if there were ways I could know where I came from, who I came from. My life has been built around Preston and Kennedy and I love them dearly. I’m grateful for the life I’ve had with them. But I’ve always wondered, you know? Was there a part of me that had nothing to do with them? Some connection I could have with my birth mother, even if I never got to meet her.”

“I didn’t mean to be so blunt about it. I was curious myself, if you’d remember in some part of your body,” Shara said softly.

Nadine shook her head. “It’s okay, I’m not upset. Just… astonished. Makes me wonder if there are other things I’m not aware of.”

“I wrote you a lullaby,” Shara said. “I should have hummed that, but this other song fit too. It was my reminder to hold on and keep going, even though things were hard. That I wasn’t just doing this for me.”

She smiled. “Thank you. I can’t imagine how hard it was, but for what it’s worth I think you did right by me. It’s interesting to imagine what our life together would have been like had you not given me up, but from what you said you had your own growing to do. I’m just sad my boy never got to meet you. Grandma…”

“Oh geez,” Shara said with a laugh. “Though I suppose I better get used to that, huh? I know Faye and Daggum are planning on having kids at some point.”

Nadine snorted. “I’m trying to picture secret-agent Shara with little ones using her as a jungle gym. It’s great!”

Shara just shook her head, a grin plastered to her face. it sounded like the best thing ever.

Plates landing heavily on the table interrupted the reverie. “So we have hangover food… sausage, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, and over-medium eggs. Dig in. I’ll get the drinks.” and he walked back into the kitchen and came back with three large glasses filled with iced tea. Taking a seat, still shirtless and not caring, he reached a metal hand over to the plate of biscuits and grabbed two and brought them to his plate, split them open, and then covered them in gravy.

Shara got up and quickly poured the coffee into a carafe and brought that to the table as well. “My contribution,” she said cheekily as she poured herself a cup. It was a double caffeine kind of morning. She dug into the delicious smelling food, once again grateful that she had a husband who could cook.

“So, Micah,” Nadine said as she opened up a biscuit of her own. “What do you think of the idea of being a grandfather?” There was a gleam in her eyes as she surveyed the gruff-appearing man.

Without missing a beat Micah said “Love it!” around a mouthful of biscuits and gravy. “Great. Fantastic. Need some little one runnin’ ‘round here. Ten, twelve more years and they can start doing the work and learnin’ how to care for this place. Why you ask? Plannin’ on snatching Faye’s big green beau from her at the wedding?” and he smiled and chewed.

Nadine’s eyes widened and she sat back. Sure he was making a joke, but it all struck Nadine very oddly and she wasn’t sure n that moment what it was. “Why would you say that? Shara had just mentioned that Faye and Daggum were planning on kids.”

Shara looked between Nadine and her husband and gave Micah a slightly raised brow even as she seemed amused.

Micah looked at her and his eyes twinkled. “I would say that because one you and Faye are the only ones who can make me that. And two; the idea of half-green kiddos running amok out here in the woods brings me a great deal of joy. So if you want to tease me about being a granddad-‘ and he winked at her, “… then you better find yourself an Orion or Vulcan. And from my experience, Orions are more fun.” and he winked and took a big bite of food and grinned at Nadine.

Something twisted in her stomach and before Nadine realized what was happening, her feet were carrying her out of the room to the main door.

Shara knew that look on her daughter’s face and her heart broke for her. It was the pain of being unable to fix something that was broken. And while she hadn’t experienced divorce, she could understand that broken feeling of your life upending and beings shattered. She rose to her feet, but for some reason didn’t follow, her eyes fixed on her retreating oldest child as she slipped through the door, closing it behind her.

She spoke to Micah, though her gaze remained on the door. “We do have a grandchild. He might be gone, but not in her mind. It was the same for me even after I learned about Tracken,” she said, still fixated on the door. “Sometimes the heart can’t let go even when the mind knows better.”

Outside, after hurrying down the steps, Nadine stood with her arms wrapped around her tightly. The wind seemed to blow through her, tousling her long dark hair, privy to the secrets unspeakable.

Micah waited for several very long minutes and then stepped out on the porch. He looked at the two women and then said softly “Hey Nadine… I’m sorry. I wasn’t saying that your boy wasn’t part of ya. I just wasn’t part of ya then. Sha was… even with all the time and distance, ‘cause she’s your Ma… I’m just the dumbass that walked inta this a couple days ago. Didn’t mean to say… well… you know. I’m sorry.” and he turned and walked back inside; coming out less than two minutes later fully dressed and, without a word, walked off and disappeared into the woods.
