When she had been on assignment, Shara had known how to blend in with crowds. She could sit in a pub, or restaurant and be almost invisible unless she wanted to be noticed. Then, of course, she would be doing so for a purpose, gathering information.

Now though, on this tiny ship, no one went anonymous for long. If she had bene much younger, perhaps a long glances and subtle darting of eyes would have made her uncomfortable and maybe even upset. But now it prompted an inward smirk and she simply carried on. Intelligence Officers were used to being the foe on the side of the ‘good guys’. Yes, they were all Starfleet Officers, but if you carried the Intel name, well, you were other. Shara didn’t mind, even as she struggled to find her way forward on this ship.

The truth was that after everything she’d been through in her sixty-five years, not much surprised her. And at best two people living could surprise her. One was also on this ship currently. The other, lightyears away but never far from her mind.

The Brazen-class ship all but forced socializing, simply because most crew and officers had no replicators in their tiny quarters. Not unless you were the CO, XO or a VIP. She could, in theory, eat in Micah’s quarters, but that was like cheating. She had asked for a regular duty assignment and few people on this ship would understand how hard she had had to fight for that right. So here she was, Commander Shara Calloway, Chief Intelligence Officer, and if she wanted food, well, she would have to endure the mess hall like everyone else.

Slipping into the moderately busy space (it was about half-full), Calloway ordered a bowl of minestrone soup and some dark rye bread with butter along with a coffee. She found an empty table near the windows in the corner where she could watch the stars and also have a clear line if sight to the door with her back covered. Habit. Dipping her spoon into her soup, her mind mulled over her latest conversation with Faye. It had been hard but necessary. How many years had her daughter sat with that resentment. Justified too. But no one could say Shara wasn’t trying her best to make amends. She was just new to it. And much like Faye had already discovered, it was a painful process of owning your own faults and fessing up to your mistakes. But out in the air, all cards on the table, she was learning that she wasn’t the villain she had allowed herself to be. Maybe she had just assumed it. And of course that meant that others might not be the villains she had assumed them to be.
At least as she went through this process, she wasn’t alone. With a slight smile at the thought of her husband, she quietly ate her soup, tearing off chunks of buttered bread and dipping them into the broth.

Ande had just finished a shift in the science labs. A ‘shift’ in the science lab wasn’t like other departments where she could understand the grumbling of boring work or cleaning but for a science officer it meant exploring what interested you, often with others and often with hilarious results. Ofcourse there were times when their department was called upon for more serious jobs but most of the time it’s all about creativity.

Now however she was hungry, she made her way into the mess hall which was as busy as it usually was at this time and ordered whatever was ordered last. Soup and bread. It looked brown and filed with different vegetables and what looked like meat, the computer displayed ‘Minestrone Soup’ to which she gave a shrug and turned to find a seat.

Ande had been a relatively unknown junior non-commisioned officer until her recent promotion and as such decided she’d start mixing with other departments, she’d often ask to sit at tables with people who weren’t in blue and today was no different. Seeing an older woman, who she knew was the Chief Intelligence Officer from having served on board for some time. Ande made her way over, “Excuse me Commander, may I sit with you?”

Eyes flicking up, Shara had been aware of someone there but was finishing a bite of bread. As her gaze met Ande’s those pale grey-blue eyes, full of intelligence, seemed amused. “Are you sure? You could be taking a great risk, you know.” Shara leaned towards Lykaios and whispered. “After all, I’m a former borg drone who fought for the Maquis, did a bunch of time travel and has now infiltrated the ship and is working for some unknown entity.” Which was a hilarious mash-up of all the different rumours currently floating about their tiny vessel. Then again, with Shara’s life and top-secret background, who was to say none of them were true? Shara gave a tiny wink and subtle gesture towards one of the other chairs with her head, the nondescript brown pulled up in a tidy roll at the back of her head.

She nodded again, “Exactly the reason I’d like to sit with you Commander you’re clearly an interesting person with lots to talk about” Andromeda had heard the rumours, as young and naive perhaps as she was she’d didn’t believe most of them. She considered the Commander, there were secrets of course but they were hers to keep and to tell if she ever felt the need to. Not waiting for an answer she sat down opposite the woman. She took her spoon and had her first mouthful which was surprisingly nice.
