Ande was nervous, given the current state of affairs and how she had just managed to keep the science team together less for a few individuals and of course their chief science officer she was exhausted. Now however she found herself hesitating outside the Captain ready room having received notice to meet her there. She sucked in one final breath and pressed the doors chime command on the panel to its right.

  • Andromeda Lykaios

From inside a light alto voice called “Enter.” The ready room was decorated with mementos and old things, a few old books- real books bound in leather- and a large painting hanging on the wall that showed a city at night. Not a good painting but not a bad one. The Captain was seated behind her desk, looking over the latest in a long series of PaDDs dropped on her desk. “Ah. Lieutenant Lykaios. Come in.”

Ande entered the room, her eyes scanning it as she took in the unfamiliar surroundings. She quickly realised she’d never been in the Captain’s ready room before and wondered how many rooms she’d never visited aboard the ship. Spying the painting and old books if it came to small talk she might atleast have something to fall back on to. “Thankyou Captain.” She finally said stopping in the middle of the room. “I came as soon as I received the notice.” She had no idea what kind of rollercoaster ride joining this crew was going to be like and so far she’d been holding on for dear life since their mission had been briefed.

  • Andromeda Lykaios, CSO

“Lieutenant, have a seat.” Sara gestured to a seat across from her. “As you know, we’ve received new orders. Not typical ones. I’ve disclosed most of what I can to the crew already, but that included that there would be an opportunity to depart the ship should anyone so choose, not feeling comfortable with the nature of the mission. I’m afraid the Chief Science Officer elected to take that option.” She rubbed her eyes and the bridge of her nose. “Since the last mission we’ve rotated crew so much it’s a miracle I can keep anyone’s damn names straight.” Sara returned her focus to Andromeda. “I take it by your continued presence on the ship that you’re not on your way out the door just yet. At this point, it would be… difficult to rotate in a new head for the science department. You’re a little green for it, but I’m a little green for a Captain. So, let’s start with; is this a job you want, Chief Science Officer, USS Asimov?”

As the COs words carried on and on Ande’s ears buzzed and her heart thrummed against her rib cage she’d thought she’d explode when the Captain finally asked the question. Composing herself Andromeda took in a deep breath, “It’s a bit soon” She went on to explain and then stopped herself. “But I’d be silly not to say yes, of course, I do it’s sooner than expected and I think I’ll make mistakes but, I stand by my department and this crew regardless of the misison.” She felt pride swell inside her. “So yes Captain, I really do.”

  • Andromeda Lykaios, CSO

“Good answer Lieutenant. It is a bit soon, but I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t think you could do it.” Sara pulled a velvet box out of her desk. “My apologies for the lack of ceremony here. But ask Si’Rek, this is just how these things get done sometimes. In order to outrank the rest of the department you’ll need to be a full lieutenant.” She opened the box. “Congratulations.”

Ande eyed the two full pips like they were gleaming diamonds, her eyes wide she felt an overwhelming sense of pride. “Th…Thankyou” she said unsure of what else to say. Unexpectedly she blinked away tears. “I’ll try my best to do you proud Captain” she added finally doing everything not to snatch the box from her.

  • Lt Andromeda Lykaios CSO

“I’m sure you’ll do fine Lieutenant.” Sara slid the box across the desk and allowed a moment for the emotions of it all to diminish a bit and then she said “This is, of course, not a typical mission. I don’t know what the demands on your department might be. I was a newly minted Lieutenant and Chief Science Officer not too long ago. If you need any assistance, I’m her for you. Of course the XO was a counselor so she’s a little better at the whole advice thing. Your new position, our mission, where to sit on the bridge, any questions for me before we proceed any further?”

-CO

Andromeda shook her head as she fingered thie box before sliding it closer until it was firmly in her lap, “No, well not yet atleast but I’m sure I’ll have loads down the line” she chuckled. “Thankyou again Captain.”

  • CSO

“You’ve earned it Lieutenant.” Sara said with a kind smile. “Now, as regards to our new mission. I’ll need you, once you’re moved into your office, to assemble some information on the Cantreken nebula, and make some recommendations about alterations that can safely be made to the science department and systems. I trust you’re up to date on what we’re doing?”
