The light immediately faded and as Shara met Gadi’s gaze, there was understanding there. Of course they both had. The details would never ever be revealed in a setting like, if ever at all. After a debriefing, events like that tended to cease to have existed. Two. Shara moved over and took two candies, the slight openness to the game now closed. It was bound to happen. Skeletons in the closet and all. But what was a fun lark and interesting intrigue to the others on the bridge, for Shara (and she suspected Bethany too), there were events best left in the deep dark past from whence they came.

As she resumed her spot, Shara popped both candies into her mouth rather intentionally. Punishment, penance. Call it what you will. Orders were orders, but that didn’t mean she didn’t have a conscience.

“Well, on that rather intriguing note, I think we shall leave you to your quiet night on the bridge. I hope we made it at least a little interesting,” she said, resuming her smile from earlier. “Oh, and uh, don’t do anything I wouldn’t do,” she said, inwardly chortling at the fact that they couldn’t even begin to guess at what lines those were.

Moving over to Bethany, Shara leaned in. “I’ve got rum at my place…”

That sounded awesome. Bethany stood walked over to the jar and reached down passing her hand into the jar. The jar was more empty but the was no way to tell how many less there were. Partly because Bethany didn’t want to think too hard about, but also the bit of intrigue would add mystery and uncertainty that would relax the junior officers. If they didn’t really see it, it didn’t really happen.

Bethany stepped into the lift and turned, her perpetual grin still in place and winked at the bridge crew as the doors slid shut.

In the safety of the turbolift, Shara leaned against the wall and exhaled. “Somehow that went nothing like, and everything like I thought it would,” she said before turning her gaze on Bethany.

“You know, I tease about you not being one of the kids despite your age because I know your file. We’ve both lived a lot of life Bethy but when you get to my age it stops being a source of confidence and pride. Sometimes the secrets that have added are are too much to hold anymore. I could use a few less of them, I think.”

“No, not quite a kid, more like a sensible teenager. Young enough to get into too much trouble, but smart enough to not get caught.” Bethy looked over at the older woman. “Why didn’t you retire, Shara? You’ve worked long enough, put in a lot of hours. You could be…” Bethany shivered a little, “teaching. Or just live for yourself. You’ve earned it.”
