At this she cocked an eyebrow. “Really? We’re pushing the ancient homemade remedy thing a little far, aren’t we? Couldn’t I just eat a salad later?” Her stomach wasn’t up to food but that wasn’t the point. Vinegar and soda water? Now that was pushing her a bit far. Strange that. Meanwhile, the drumming was still going on in her head and she closed her eyes briefly to still the extra sensory input.

Commander Calloway, CIO

“We’re not federation now Calloway.” He reminded her with a grin. “Sometimes you gotta get a little creative. The vinegar has a natural diuretic effect that can help combat morning-after fluid retention, and help to stabilize blood sugar levels, the soda water will settle the nausea and hydrate and the other drink takes care of the rest. Gotta take both for the reaction to kick in, then ten minutes and youll be good.” He held up a Vulcan hand gesture. “Vulcan scouts honour.”

“Uh huh,” she said, setting the green drink on the biobed beside her and reluctantly took the new glass from Ryley.

Leaning on his cane he waited for her to take the second glass. “I’m curious, is it a force of Will thing, a training thing or a luck things that you’re not vomiting right now?”

“A little of Column A, B and C,” she said before sipping on the soda water. It wasn’t quite as terrible as expected but it was altogether weird. “I am a woman of incredible will, twenty years experience as a field agent and if I had left my quarters about ten minutes later, I’d have had to ask for a house call and that would have cost me more. Experienced I might be, rich I am not.” She was already starting to talk a little clearer, her natural rasp dying back a little as she switched glasses, reluctantly taking her ‘medicine’. She could give him a hard time about it, but it was as he said: she had done this to herself, and like all things with this mission, she would suffer the consequences.

He nodded as if this made sense. “You know, there are certain physiological reactions to nausea. Five key ones to be exact. When a patient displays all five it’s almost Impossible for them not to throw up. Body takes over…” his eyes did a tricorder like scan of her up and down again. “I’m Impressed. And for the record, I don’t make house calls.”

“I am Impressive,” Calloway said without any arrogance at all, just the knowing of a person who rarely felt the need to undersell herself. “I figured a house call would have to be something of an extraordinary circumstance. That or you’d have to actually like the person, and I understand that’s a rare phenomenon too,” she said, flashing a grin before switching back to the green drink. She sucked the good off the end of the celery before chomping off the very end and then twirling the vegetable between her fingers.

Commander Calloway, CIO

“There have been the rare occasions.” He admitted. He watched her with the celery. “So…moonshine makes for good training? Have you alerted anyone about this? I’d be up for a study in worker efficiency. I mean if the pirates of old were able to do so much full of rum and opium who are we to question their ways.”

His mind drifted to the recently filled, unused, hypo that was in his desk. His leg gave a throb as he suppressed the urge as if it understood his thought processes.
