A smirk tugged at her mouth. “It’s nice to know I’m not the only one that can scare the kids around here. It’s also nice to have someone else besides Piklesimer around that’s actually a peer in age.” She lifted her mug to him. “Cheers.” She rather than the numbing burn of the moonshine, her throat was bathed in the soothing warmth of replicated coffee. The sensation allowed her mind to gaze out the window and for a moment she had this strange layering of memories: one where she gazed up at the stars longingly, another in a different quadrant resentful to be looking at those stars, and another from the same quadrant where she was contemplating the mess she had just dumped on the life of someone she cared about. The stars held so many mysteries and sometimes they also held answers. Today though? It was a toss-up what she’d find.

He gave a quiet chuckle and returned her gesture with his own mug, drinking normally this time. He watched her watch the stars, content to sit in the silence that so many found the need to fill. After a moments he too turned to the stars then away again as if the sight of them was an irritation.

Shara usually kept things close to her chest, unless there was a good reason to, and today was no different. But this was no ordinary person across from her. No, this man had been the one to finally end the terrible pain her daughter had been in, that she herself had been forced to witness over and over. And unlike others, as a result of her last assignment before the Asimov, Shara knew the details of her daughter’s entire file. In some ways it had bene careless of her to even reveal herself to him as Faye’s mother, though he probably would have made the connection by the surname alone at some point. He was smart like his daughter, after all. Studying him a moment, she wasn’t sure what else to say except, “Thanks.” It felt hollow. Not enough. But would it ever be enough? Perhaps not.

For a moment he looked mildly stunned, as though he wasn’t sure what to do with the sentiment. His icy eyes scrutinised her as if prompting her to give him an indication of what was supposed to happen next. Eventually he raised his mug back up and said “You’re both welcome.” And then drank again.

She just gave a nod.

“So, which you do they think you are?” He asked quietly from his mug.

Shara’s eyes lit up as she sipped her coffee, leaning forward in her seat. “Well, that’s the fun. They all don’t really know me very well, so they are meeting Elaine. She’s tired of playing by the rules and her loyalty is to herself first and above all. If the needs of the crew mesh with hers, well then lucky for everyone. But if you piss her off, she’s just as likely to throw a punch in your face. And that’s on a good day.” The best part was that like all good personas, they wove aspects of your own personality and experience amongst the lies. In Shara’s case, it was hard to know fully which was the truth and which was made up.

“Good to know.” Ryley said “So after this don’t accept any mugs of coffee from you.” He grinned.
