Bethany snorted, “Got it. I’m not telling, buuuuut....” she turned her gaze on Shara with a wicked grin, “Never have I ever had a man, or woman for that matter, fight my battles.” Her eyes danced and then, “Oh and by the way Shara, I’m sending your husband a letter letting him know he’s got competition on board.” Then she broke into real fits of giggles. Bethany knew something about Shara that no one else did. She wasn’t telling but it was making life fun at the moment.

Gadi, CoS

Shara’s hard turned slowly and a deeply serious look appeared in her eyes. “An admirer you say. Huh. Well, I am pretty awesome,” she said, her eyes sparkling. But she did take a swig of the moonshine.

Laila still wanting to hang on, listen to the three women, sat there half past out and barely comprehending the words that were being said. With one blink of her eyes she fell backward, a surprising soft thud sounded as she fell on her back and drifted off into a deep sleep.

Dacascos, COO

“Oh dear,” Shara said as Bethany began to react to Laila.

Despite the shine in her system, Bethany’s reflexes we’re fast (of course she’d been sitting still so the stuff hadn’t spread too far) and she reached out snagging Dacascos’ arms to slow her fall. “Shoulda given her something easier.” Bethany huffed out a sigh and got up, pausing a moment while the shine hit her fast. “Fwooo okay. Time to go home pretty. Your bed is a lot more comfy than my floor.” Bethany knelt down and lifted Laila in a fireman carry and stood, slowly, she didn’t want to drop her. “Carry on ladies, I shall return!”

Miranda wasn’t quite as fast, but one-handed helped make sure Laila’s head didn’t bounce off the deck, supporting her neck as Gadi eased her to the floor. She moved to help Gadi with the passed out Ops Chief, but she managed to get both of them upright before Miranda could be much use. “‘Kaaay.” Watching which direction Gadi went she frowned. that was back toward her quarters. She hadn’t paid attention but up until recently the space on the far side from Gadi’s quarters had been empty. Was Dacascos on the other side?

Calloway just shook her head and looked at Miranda. “I’m not sure if that counts as an initiation but it seems like it might fit the bill.”

“I dunno either. But it’s a shtart. The real fun will be at oh dark thirty when she’s gotta get up for her shifft.” Miranda grinned ,then groaned. “Ugh, I hope the warp core doesn’t make my head throb with it if I wind up with a hangover.” That would be a day in hell, for sure.

Bethany stepped out of her door and two doors down and used her security override to open the door. “Lights.” The room illuminated and Bethany carried the unconscious woman to her bed and set her down as carefully as she could. She drapped a blanket over her and then turned the lights back off as she left.

Bethany reappeared in her quarters and slipped down to her spot. She blinked her eyes wide. “Okay…that shine.... that’s....” She let out a heavy sigh, “that’s worse than shine.” She pointed a waving finger at both of them. “Don.. don’t pass out unless yer stayin. I can’t do that again without droppin’ someone.” Bethany grew up stealing shine from her uncle’s and one swallow of that stuff was enough to burn your esophagus out. This stuff was worse.

Gadi

“That’s because it’s good,” Shara said, a wicked smile returning. “And don’ worry ‘bout me. I only gotta go next door.”

Bethany snorted. “Yeah and stop to spill your guts in the loo on your way.” She waved a hand, “Seriously though…you are welcome to stay and hide out.”

“Oh pleassse, it won’t be me ya have ta worry about throwing up,” Shara said.

Chewing on the inside of her cheek, Shara pondered. “Ya know, I never got to tell her my story. Then again, it’s not for the feint of heart,”she said with a shrug.

“I guess I’ll find out later if I wind up havin’ to hold Dacascos’ hair back or something. Ash for the story, only if ya wanna.” She shrugged, then giggled a little. “I dunno if it’s better or worse, but it seems like it’d be good for two things. Degreasin’ engines and killin’ brain cells.”

Miranda, lubricated CE

Bethany shook her head, “Not sure the shiiiiine woulda helped her accept it, but only frighten her.” Bethany looked like she might say more but decided against it. It was moot. “And makin’ the most brilliant Molotov cocktails ya ever seen.”

Gadi, CoS

Shara snorted and knocked back a little bit more of the potent liquor. Guess she wasn’t opening up the second jar. After all, alcohol poisoning was not the goal here. And it wasn’t that she wanted to tell her story, but somehow felt she needed to, that her distress about this mission only made sense if you understood what had triggered her.

Shara crossed her legs, her bare feet tucked under her. “I’ve been undercover in Romulan space three times in m’ career. The last one was a few years ago and it was the last undercover assignment I’ve been on until now. I did intensive trainin’ in the medical field b’fore I went as a medic and I’m not exaggeratin’ when I say that this was one of my best covers. I was flawless. So much so that I got what I was hopin’ for and got assigned to a special Tal Shiar fasss-ility.” Shara held up a finger. “So I was doin’ my job and gatherin’ information an’ one day they say they have a new prisoner. Some Federation spy they slipped through da legal system and managed to get der hands on. I found out a little alter dat they had someone in dis prisoner’s inner circle who they had gotten info from.” Her right hand formed a fist, her fingernails digging into her palm.

“I figure I will do what I can to get dem out, but I had to be careful, because I couldn’t compromise my cover. Dat would get us both killed. Calloway shifted her attention to Miranda. “You have ta understand that when Bethy here comments that people like me don’t normally live as long as I have, she ain’t exaggeratin’. I’d dat good. But nothing, no training, no ‘sperience, could prepare me for the moment they bring me in to look over de prisoner and get baseline readin’s and I am gazin’ down into the eyes of my own daughter, Faye.”

Shara tipped her head up, forcing herself to breath for a moment before she continued. “Nine months,” she whispered. “Dat’s how long it took me to get her out of dere. And meanwhile they were doin’ dese esperiments. Dey implanted a device in ‘er brainstem dat would cause pain if she became emotional. If she was calm, all good. If she feld anger, or fear, or hell, even amusement, bam! Her body would feel like it was on fire. And dey made me dose her with all kinds of drugs, testing responses and thresholds. Sometimes when we took ‘er back to her cell, I could give her a mild sedative to give ‘er a break, buuhh… she wasted away in front of me day by day until one of my attempts to get help worked. Long story short, I got ‘er to a shuttle, gave ‘er something to sharpen ‘er senses a bit and she got the hell out of dere. Buuhh she didn’t know it was me. All she knew at the time was that Voyager returned to the Alpha Quadrant and den I disappeared. We only juss got reunited and I had to tell her in the middle of a crisis that I had been dere, that I knew what she had gone through and now I have PTSD,” Shara said, her voice cracking. And before she knew it tears were slipping down her face. “I’m not supposed to be doing dis! Psyc wouldn’t clear me for field work. But I can’t walk away. Dey say it’s a choice, but it’s not, because if I don’t stay people will die and I won’t be responsible for dat! And I don’t know what to do. All I know is when de counsellor started crackin’ jokes I snapped and all I wanted was te punch ‘im in the face. Would ‘ave at least been in character I suppose.”
