“Old age and well executed craft beat youth and brute strength. There was no craft to that. It was like watching hormone driven, steroid pumped children in their first schoolyard brawl.” Bethany picked up both canes and examined them carefully, testing the weight and balance, eyes gleaming and then returned them.

“That was kinda the point.” Ryley chuckled from the floor.

Catching his breath, Ryley took the hand and allowed himself to be pulled upwards. He sat massaging his jaw and rubbed some of the blood from the inside of his bottom lip. His expression also becoming a grin. “You’d know you old quack.”

He looked up at Bethany still grinning. “Don’t worry kid, old blue and I go way back.”

Bethany looked at Ryley dead pan and said rather dryly, “Obviously.”

To Tolar he frowned and rotated his shoulder grimacing at the shot of pain. “You added weights to that stick since last time?”

Ryley
MD

“No.” The Andorian grunted, gingerly testing his own jaw motion. “You’re just old.”

“You should both add more than weights to those, and you’re both out of practice. I’m adding mandatory combat training to both your schedules. Yes I can do that, don’t make me come find you.” She grinned like the thought amused her. “I’m busy enough.” She held a hand out to both of them. “Alright, up off the floor. Before Bailey has a heart attack.” She chuckled softly.

Gadi, CoS

Zareth made a face, at once expressing displeasure and whimsy, somehow. “You know, that wasn’t combat… Oh forget it.” With that, he pushed himself up off the deck, pausing to make sure his prosthetic leg was undamaged. The leg looked normal enough, but in reality it held the sort of surprises that Gadi had suggested for the canes.

Bethany’s brows both rose as if she was waiting for Zarath to continue, but she was grinning the whole time. The whole display was a badly rehearsed play, but it was funny.

“Hey give me a break, I’m still recovering from a serious beat down by three Klingons and months in cryostasis.” He took the offered hand and gingerly got to his feet, the bad leg burned painfully and he grimaced before leaning on the biobed nearest him. “Besides I have a doctors note.”

“And that proves my point. If you were in practice, with the skills and intelligence you posses, three Klingons should be a walk in the park. Even with stiff joints from cryostasis.” Bethany looked at him, she was grinning but for once it didn’t reach her eyes. “A doctor’s note? What are you gonna do Ryley? Look at the Tellarites, the Orions, members of this gods for saken ‘Shadow Syndicate’ and go, ‘Oh wait, I have a doctor’s note, come back and we’ll fight in a month?’ I mean if that’s the case, then report to the brig when crap hits the air scrubbers. You’ll be safer there.” Was she joking, was she serious? Hard to tell, probably a lot of both.

The chuckle was maybe part amusement, part something else. “Oh don’t you worry about me kiddo, if the going gets rough then I’ll peddle my wares to whoever has the highest bidding. There’s often a way around things if your clever enough and If that means jumping ship then so be it but if it comes to it don’t worry I can hold my own and if not?…well one less person for you to worry about.” He fixed her with a look that made it difficult to tell if he was kidding or not, his tone remained light however.

Bethany shook her head but grinned, “Oh I have no doubt you’ll be fine. My concern is totally selfish. Without you who’s gonna fix me?” She was completely jesting. Her duty was to the safety and security of the ship and entire crew. Bethany took that very seriously. She’d worry whether gramps over there liked it or not. “Besides we have a deal. You figure this out, and it’s you, me, and a bottle for year.”

He gave a grin and then pushing off from the biobed and leaning heavily on his cane he made for the bottles of booze, took one and poured three small measures of green liquid into three small beakers. The stuff was potent after all. He brought them back and offered them both to Tolar and Bethany then took his in one mouthful. His mouth burnt where the split was and he closed one eye and made a face as the alcohol went down.

Tolar took the proffered glass and immediately downed the contents without any sign of discomfiture. “Aldebaran whiskey… You always were a cheapskate.” His gruff voice seemed offended, but he shook the glass in the universal sign for “please-sir-can-I-have-some-more?” Then without another word, Zareth took up a nearby tissue regenerator and gave Ryley a knowing look and a nod to his split lip.

“Why the hell would I waste the good stuff on you of all people?” Ryley asked but did as bid and refilled the glass. He offered Bethany some more then recorded the bottle without taking a second measure himself. He frowned at the tissue regenerator and held his hand out for it.

“Play with your own toys Igor. That one’s mine.”

Bethany didn’t drink often, it was a liability when you were in uncertain circumstances, but now with all this other health crap going on, she wasn’t sure she should. Then again she doubted Ryley would give her something that would kill her. Create an interesting experiment - sure, kill her? She hoped not. She downed the glass but refused a refill when Ryley offered.

Zareth gave Ryley a look that could’ve curdled milk.

Ryley made a face in return.

His dark eyes turned to Gadi next. “You aren’t wrong about the training. We’re rusty… Not that that’s a bad thing when you consider the good doctor and I didn’t mean to stay in this particular line of work…”

-Zareth, CSO

“No one intends to stay in this line of work.” She shook her head, “Great I’ve got a geezer gang of four now.”

“Speak for yourself. I meant to stay in medicine, what I didn’t mean was to get myself dragged into any more covert ops nonsense.”

” That’s what I meant, you old coot.” Zareth rolled his eyes.

He trailed off into a small noise of pain as he pulled >himself up to sit on the biobed. “Hence the ‘get the hell out of my sickbay?’”

To this, the Andorian made a rude gesture.

“Temper temper.” Was the only response.

He continue once he was sitting, the biobed responded >to him but instead of showing his vitals it seemed >confused for a second and then recalibrated to show >the man sitting talking was in a level 5 coma.

“like the decor?” He asked. “Remind you of the old division 14 rig?” He grinned and began sealing the split in his lip.

Tolar nearly spit out the whiskey he was in the midst of sipping. “Good God, don’t remind me… I thought ol’ Tripod would be the death of us all…” his chuckle sounded like dry stones clacking together.

-Zareth, CSO

Bethany listened to the back and forth with a grin. “Okay before you two go completely down memory lane, serious question Ryley. Could I end up being a liability with all this?” She waved a hand from her head to her feet. “If so I have to tell the Cap and Calloway.”

Gadi, CoS

Ryley laughed at Zareth’s comment then looked at Bethany. “Depends if you mean you yourself…” he copied her hand gesture. “Then oh boy yeah. But more fool anyone who tries to take advantage of that.” He waggled his eyebrows suggestively but then looked serious, shaking his head “If you mean the physiology thing then at the moment no. If that changes I’ll let you know.”

Ryley
MD

Bethany gave Ryley a slow once over from his head to his toes and back, “Too bad you aren’t occasionally foolish, Ryley, but you do know how to make a girl’s day.” She winked at him, finished what was in her glass, and walked across the bay to return it.

Ryley quirked an eyebrow and copied her look from head to toe and back again. The corner of his mouth turned up but nothing else.

The Andorian cocked an antenna as he looked at Gadi. “We’re all a liability in some way or another.” Zareth grunted in his gruff fashion. “The trick to that is working together. Ryley knows what to look for in me. He can do the same for you. I’ll do the same for him, etc etc. The mission is horseshit, but… We’ve got each other to make sure we get home in one piece…” He took a sip and worked his jaw painfully.

-Zareth, CSO

“Again, Igor, speak for yourself.” He picked up the hand held part of a very modified tricorder and rolled his eyes “you’re such a baby. Come here.” He turned the device on Zarath’s jaw.

Bethany looked from Zarath to Ryley to Zarath and back again. “I’m not sure if I should smile because he’s so sincere or go over and pat him on the shoulder and reassure him I’m gonna watch out for him too.” She turned that perpetual playful grin on Zarath, “Seriously though, yeah the mission is crap, we were ill prepared and informed about it, we all have weaknesses and faults that can trip things up, but I live for this stuff. I’m not worried about it. We’re all gonna die one day, so I’ll go out having fun.
What I am worried about, is that at some crucial moment my body decides it really hates it self and I collapse. I just don’t want to take anyone with me needlessly.”

Gadi, CoS

Ryley gave her a serious look. “Trust me kid, I’ll keep you right.” He said “Ill get you a better answer but for now if you’re gunna collapse, I’ll be there to sort it.”

Bethany grinned, “I know you will.” She walked over and planted a kiss right on his cheek. “You’re the best Ryley.” She looked from Ryley to Zarath and back, “Alright well I’m hungry and apparently I’m eating alone because neither of you won…whatever that was.”

For all of his bravado, his innuendo and suggestive comments…as she approached him his back stiffened, awkwardness extruding off of the greying old doctor and when she kissed his cheek, the flush of colour burned sudden and obvious. He cleared his throat and said somewhat hoarsely. “Uhh..sure…”

He went back to Zareth’s jaw. “Ill give you something for the jaw, but I’m not fixing your eye. You can wear that as a reminder.”

Ryley
MD

Bethany was almost to the door when she stopped and looked over her shoulder at Ryley, “Unless I’m spending the night again.”

Gadi, CoS

And just like that the bravado was back, as he repaired Zareth’s jaw he grinned and gave Bethany a wink “You’re welcome to spend the night any time, you know I loved sleeping with you. But it’s not medically justified this time so you can go to your own bed if you want.”

Ryley
MD

“Tsk tsk tsk”

The Andorian raised an eyebrow, and then winced at the pain of having his jaw repaired.

“Told you he was a dirty old man…”
