He looked calculating for a moment, clearly the cogs in his head turning. “Tough dilemma, massive dilemma.” He rubbed his beard.

It could have come across as sarcasm but his words were genuine and so for a moment Shara just nodded, letting him ponder.

“I could synthesise a Theragen Derivative and give you a hypo to take at night. It’s not a sedative so to speak. More a way to relax. The compound reduces nerve inputs into the brain, resulting in a calming effect and as an added bonus there will be a reduction in emotions such as anxiety…especially stress. The upside is it’s a Non sedative effect.” He splayed his hands. “Best I can offer if you’re interested.”

In the world of medication it was a win-win. Shara blew out a breath as she contemplated possible issues. “Any interactions with my antidepressant I’d have to worry about? Or known side effects to watch for?” If there was something small she could take it could be the difference between success and failure on this mission. And failure would likely mean someone, even her, would end up dead. That could not happen. Not on her watch. Not unless it was absolutely unavoidable.

Ryley gave a small shrug. “Not normally, I’d need to see what dosage you were on. You might find you need less of the antidepressant but again, I’d need to see your file but I don’t think so. Side effect, again no but you’d need to avoid self medication for a bit till the balance was right.” He’s praised both eyebrows pointedly.

Shara snorted. “Well, normally I don’t drink that much, so no worries there. But are we talking all alcohol is a no, or is like a drink with dinner okay?” She wanted to be clear about what was or wasn’t okay and yes she had strangely been tempted to drink a lot more. But she had been honest, she didn’t normally drink that much, though if she were honest, there had been in increase in the amount of social drinking. was that weird? Or was it just the fact that she even had people to drink with in the first place?

He gave her a sure I’m not judging look. “One or two yes, any more than than no. And no bloodwine. Try a soda.” He drank from his own mug smirking.

“Soda…” Shara scoffed before sipping on her coffee, knowing that her other preferred beverage (the one currently in her hand) was also going to be on the ‘in moderation’ list.

Gazing back out the window, her mind slid down a strange rabbit hole moving from one topic to the next. “You know the really strange part of our assignment for me? That I am supposed to be all tough and menacing because that’s what people expect a rebel to be under these circumstances, but the reality is that my covert work was far more banal than most people want to consider. The quietest high-stakes work there ever was.”

Ryley listened drinking his coffee. “Do you know what I do when people expect certain things from me?” He asked between mouthfuls. “I do the opposite. You’re supposed to be the person getting us through this. How you do it…or maybe better who you are while you do it is up to you.”

Shara smirked. “I got the cover under control. It’s my speciality. Besides, no one, not even my husband knows fully what to expect from me. That’s the one gift I’ve had from being not myself for so many years.”

He snorted “Covert work the best kept known secret the federation has.”

Her amusement grew. “Didn’t say it was a secret. But I am very good at it, and that’s not just ego talking.” Maybe a little bit, but it was also the truth. Her classified record had proven it over and over again. “But my point was that the actual work of doing reconnaissance is actually quite boring. So one some level you just full immerse yourself in your character and go about living that life.”
