Picking up a cracker, Shara layered cheese and a cold cut on top with deliberate motions. “That is very true,” she said before munching on her bite. The crunch of the crackers felt oddly satisfying at the moment as if it might release micro-amounts of tension. As she considered his statement, she couldn’t help but smile. Right now smiling felt like a luxury, as did honest to goodness laughs. But as Shara took in her husband’s face all she could feel was this absolute adoration. It shone in her eyes. She had done a lot of hard things in her life. But the for the first time in decades she felt like it was easier.

Reaching her hand our, she found his and gave it a squeeze. “I’m grateful for you,” she said softly.

Micah smiled a crooked smile and said “Naw… you’re grateful you got a ‘shine supply. The fact the runner is easy on the eyes is just a bonus.” and he grabbed a slice 9f meat and some cheese and popped it in his mouth.

Micah

“Pssst! If I wanted ‘shine I could find a supplier. It does happen to be rather convenient though,” she said with a little grin before popping some cheese into her mouth.

Shara sighed. “I’m not sure this whole break down-the-pick-me-back-up plan is going to work. I feel like we need something more. I’m not sure my getting blinding drunk on ‘shine every other day is a top-notch plan either.” She tried to keep her voice light but she could feel the tension in her jaw. Yes, sharing the ‘shine with the gals had been ultimately worthwhile, but it didn’t negate the fact that her coping mechanisms had shifted or were missing entirely. At least she knew for sure that no matter what happened Micah would be there for her. It was the one thing that kept her going. That and her girls. She had to make it home to them, and not just as a shell of a person.

~Shara

Micah looked at her intensely for a long moment and then said “Listen, wife… we just have to get through this. And if it means getting blind drunk and cussing out the bulkheads every other night, thats what we’re gonna do. But I know… know… that this isn’t the last ride we take. We both have too much back home to let this beat us. And I’ll be damned if I went to all that work to find Nadine just so we up and vanish on her. So… eyes on the prize, okay? This job is gonna set you and me both up so that we don’t ever have to take an assignment we don’t want ever again. The karma we’re pulling from this will make the damn Federation President pause before asking us for anything. We manage to shut down this Syndicate… we’re set for the rest of our lives. Professionally and personally. Yeah yeah yeah… cart before the horse, I know. But… that don’t mean it’s not true.”

Micah

Hope wasn’t her forte. Hell, it was barely in her vocabulary most of the time. But everything about Micah in this moment made her want to hope and sometimes the will to do or believe in something was as good as the action of it. Sometimes it was the nudge you needed. For Shara right now, the fear was so surface still that she wanted to believe him. She wanted to make promises, for Micah to make them. But they knew better. Reaching for the wine, she let the body of the liquid sit on her tongue. Finally, she nodded. “Okay. But do me a favour? Watch me and the alcohol. If it feels too much, pull me back, will ya? Between my father and Faye, I know all too well that genetically we’re not the best when it comes to the stuff. I’ve always managed to toe that line just fine. But I’m a little more worried that all this will be too much. So, you’re my watcher, got it?”

~Shara

“Oh sure… let the hillbilly ‘shine runner be your judge on how much is too much. I can’t see any way that could backfire.” Micah said with a laugh, but he took her hand and squeezed it tight and said “You know I got you, Sha. Now and always.”
