“Scan this.” Boyd said to one of the security officers. As they waited, he looked at Elaine. “We are… but still…” and he shook his head in a We’ll talk in private manner. He turned his attention to Security. They ran a scan and said “Well… nothing is dinging but see can’t see inside. We’re gonna have to-” and Boyd held up a finger. “Nope. Not happenin’. I’ll take responsibility for it. Thanks.” The officer took a breath to protest, paused, and then just shook their head and motioned them forward.

Boyd led them to their quarters, pausing just long enough to get the information that they had less than ten hours to move over to the new ship, which they were getting ready to move to dock with right then.

Once inside their quarters, Micah looked at Shara and said “Okay… what the hell?!”

Pikelsimer

Her eyes narrowed. “You didn’t know about this?” Shara asked, her character of Elaine falling away as easily as it was generated. Her mind was working through the various scenarios and how it would complicate their mission. On the surface, it didn’t, but it spoke to something deeper that Shara was far more concerned with.

Hell no I didn’t know about this! Are you crazy?” and he shook his head. “I swear by everything thats holy, never in my life have I seen a starship captain sell their own ship right out from underneath themself. That is a move I wouldn’t ‘a seen coming in a thousand years.”

Pikelsimer

Shara rubbed her face, more than fatigue settling in. The sensation hovering under the surface was an uncomfortable one and she needed to breath in order to push it away. “I just…” She shook her head. “Shall we see what’s in the case?” she said flatly.

~Shara

Micah rubbed his face with his flesh hand and said “Yeah… might as well.” and he flopped down on the couch and looked at the case. “No signs of booby traps, so here we go.” He tapped the latches with his metal fingers and they slid open and the case lid rose a fraction of an inch. Micah leaned over and looked inside and then shrugged and opened the case.

Inside were four pistols, matched in pairs. One set black, and one set deep dark red. And not just any pistols. Micah whistled softly. “These are Son’a disruptors… pretty heavily modified ones, at that.” He lifted one out of the box and looked it over with an expert eye. “Damn, hun… match set trigger assembly with DNA-locked firing studs, Caldarian targeting set and deuterium inlaid barrel with ferrous carbonite shielding… shit, you could fire this thing for hours and it wouldn’t heat up.” He smiled and looked at the others, going over each of them in turn. “Somebody paid a lot for these… and they meant business with ‘em too. These things’ll punch a hole in Marine Combat Armor, for f#ck’s sake.” He looked up at Shara and grinned. “Oh… we are gonna get in so much trouble with these.” and he laughed.

Micah

This should have been one of those fun little games they could play since it had been their whole careers, but Shara’s mood was dampened heavily by the side swipe she still couldn’t process. Moving over, she looked down at the case and then reached down for one, picking it up with all the care they demanded. She turned it back and forth, studying it and gave him a faint smile. “You wanted weapons,” she said, but there was no enthusiasm behind her words.

Micah set the pistol to the side and took her hand. “Ok. Talk to me, hun. What’s an yer mind? ‘Cause if these beauties don’t bring a smile to yer face, I don’t have much hope for us trying to break some bedroom furniture later.” he said with a slight grin, just enough to let her know that he was sincere behind the innuendo.

Micah

He was right. Heavy weaponry should be the cue for some fun and put them both in a good mood. Call it what you will, but Shara and Micah knew who they were and didn’t apologize for it. He was playing dirty by holding her hand too. She had to either give in and let her thoughts float to the surface, or pull away from him, and the latter was just not her unless she was angry. The truth was she was too scared to be angry in this moment.

Shara’s lips moved as they attempted to shape words, but no sounds came out. She shook her head, her eyes welling with tears. “Pickle, I…” She squeezed his hand as if it would help her say something and admittedly she was probably squeezing a bit hard. She inhaled deeply for a moment to steady herself, but her chest felt tight. “I’m losing the threads of all of this. I’m supposed to be keeping us ahead of the game, so we stay alive and I can’t. That means people are going to die! And I made promises to them, and I feel like I’m breaking them by sheer ignorance. Wherever that decorated covert agent I was is, she’s hiding from me and I can’t do this mission without her. I won’t make it.” This was not Shara whining. She didn’t speak her fears aloud to just anyone, even herself, without good reason. Fears were normal, but fear got you killed.

~Shara

Micah moved close to her and spoke softly. “Sha, listen… I get it. And nothin’ I can say is gonna make it better. But…” and he reached over and took her hand, “… this, anymore, I don’t think is about you and me and Blue. These guys… this crew… they are stepping up and taking this on. Face first and and reckless, sure… but hun, they’re gettin’ it done. It’s definitely not smooth-” and he laughed slightly. “- an’ it sure as shit ain’t how we’d do it. But maybe that’s a good thing. It gives the whole op a level of legitimacy I dont think we could’a fashioned for ‘em. So maybe- an’ this is just me spitballin’ here- but maybe we look at this run as less ‘our responsibility’ and more ‘on-the-job-training’.” he said with a smile.
