Aasrel held her hand, squeezing gently. He smiled and nodded. That’s right. That means you get another kiss. Then he leaned in and kissed her again.

Bethany smiled as he kissed her. I like this game. She slipped her arms around him with all intentions of not leaving his arms for a very long time.

Bethany

Aasrel pulled her closer and kissed her again. That one’s free. He said, smiling down at her. Your turn. Focus on a specific emotion of yours. I like to use specific thoughts or memories. I’ll tell you what I sense.

Bethany went still, searching her memory for something. She didn’t know why, but she was self-conscious about it. Aasrel had seen her sob like a lost child over her memories, her bitterness, her fear. She wanted to share something positive.

She thought about arriving on Earth when she was 7. The first time her mother took her into the mountains, they had hiked and hiked for hours. All the way to the top of the mountain. Bethany had wondered why they couldn’t use a transporter, and her mother had shown her the wonder of being among the details, and the shocking sight of coming out of the trees and seeing the world stretched out below them. Underlying it though was bittersweet grief over losing her.

Bethany

Aasrel was quiet for a long moment, and then his voice was in her head: Hmm… Wonderment, awe… amazement. He left off the grief though he did feel it. He wanted her to be happy. Aasrel had once been trained to see things, telepathically, and he saw for a moment, the world stretched out below Bethany and her mother.

Bethany smiled. Her eyes still closed as she remembered. “Yes. I’d never seen anything like it. I thought it was more wonderful than seeing Betazed or Earth from space.” Her mother had shown her every inch of the mountains. Shown her the beauty and mystery of the still mostly untouched land, until she got sick again. The memory changed suddenly. A woman who looked exactly like Bethany. The likeness was more shocking because she was sick and looked much like Bethany had when Aasrel found her. The memory brought overwhelming grief and Bethany watched her mother die.

The grief didn’t show in her face, but it filled her and made her ache. I miss her so much.

Bethany

She looks so much like you. He didn’t mean to project the thought but if Bethany was listening, it was there. I’m sure she was wonderful. From what you say, she sounds like it. He said to her.
