You took to it remarkably quickly.” There was a comfortable silence. Then, for some reason he started to play ‘As Time Goes By’. “I don’t know why, but I just feel like playing this. It’s always been a relaxing play for me. Maybe that’s it. I’m relaxed for the first time in a good long while.” : : : : : : : : : : -Ben Wylde : : : : At some point during Ben’s playing of ‘As Time Goes By’, the arch to the holodeck opened and a man in civies entered. He stood, listening, before singing the lyrics softly to himself. As he sang, transformed at his eyes, memories of the last time he sang this song came flooding back to him. He was at the wedding of his kid brother and his beautiful wife. Today wasn’t the anniversary of their wedding, but rather that of their deaths. Coming in here and hearing that song reminded him how much he still missed them, even in the twelve years that had passed. : : : : : : : : “I don’t see anyone who is going to stop you from performing the piece,” Andromeda offered, her leisure movement insinuating the oncoming shrug. She allowed herself to rest her shoulders and hands, listening as the man recited the song. She could understand why it was such a peaceful composition for him, “That’s good. We could all use some peace around here.” : : : : : : : : Sentrya : : : : CE : : : : John-King nodded his agreement with her, peace was definitely in short supply around here. : : : : : : He continued to play. “Starfleet rarely allows us such luxuries. We have to enjoy every moment we can.” He said with a smile. As the song ended, he rested his fingers on the keys, the faint smile of someone truly at peace across his face. : : : : : : -Ben Wylde : : : “You couldn’t be any more correct,” Andromeda agreed, smiling in a nature of serenity. She discovered that, by the end of today, she would have found a new friend in Ben. Despite the fact that they shared few commonalities. : : : John-King wiped the tears from his eyes and he nodded his approval and appreciation. : : : : “Well played, and just what I needed. I am John-King McKenzie, ship’s counsellor, J-K for short.” : : - McKenzie, CNS : : Andromeda looked up from her placement, giving a quiet nod towards the Counselor. “Hello. I’m Andromeda Sentrya, the ship’s chief engineer.” She greeted, “Are you Alright?” : : Sentrya : CE : “I will be. That song … brings back memories.” John-King explained, “my brother, Edgar, and his wife, Margaret, had it as their wedding song, and they had me sing it for them. They since died, and the song was once again sung at their funeral, by me. It brings me happy and sad memories at the same time, Lieutenant. They died in an attack on a space station where they were serving. I became the guardian of my nephew, Leon, following that. Leon was named for my father, who also died in that same attack. The memories come back to me today especially, as today is the anniversary of their deaths.” John-King sighed, “I wish it was easy for me to forget the painful memories of their deaths, but without them, I can’t enjoy the good times, I suppose and there were good times, many good times.” :

Sentrya could not deny the feeling of awkwardness that settled well within her chest. She was not a particularly social being, often keeping to herself. Yet, this stranger, essentially, was divulging rather personal information to both her and Ben. What was she supposed to say? ‘I am sorry?’ No, that didn’t seem appropriate in this exchange. She couldn’t do much, for she had nearly no idea who this man was, which only added to the slight anxiety that was mixed with her awkwardness. She couldn’t quite determine what she was supposed to do, as she tapped her fingers aimlessly against the hard surface of the piano. “..May their spirits be ever present.”

“Thank you Lieutenant,” John-King replied, “I see them in my nephew, in the way he moves and talks, sometimes in the way he looks…”

John-King paused for a long moment, before seemingly pulling himself out of his mood almost as fast as he entered it. Suddenly he looked apologetic, “I’m sorry, Lieutenant … Ensign,” John-King looking from Sentrya to Wylde and back to the Chief Engineer, “I hope this wasn’t a private program or something like that. I must admit, I just opened the door to the holodeck from the outside and came on in without giving any thought to this being a program not for anyone to join in.”

He called for the arch and headed towards it, “my apologies, I certainly didn’t mean to intrude,” he said as he approached the exit to the rest of the ship.

“Good evening, Counselor.” Andromeda offered a warm smile, watching as the man disappeared. She felt bad for him, but was utterly terrible at expressing her emotions towards such bleak topics.

At the same time, Ensign Frogue (being new to the ship) entered the holodeck. “Um, can anyone join?”

Doc Frogue

“Hello, Ensign.” Andromeda rose a hand, waving towards him. “Of course, do join us.” A pause, “What is your name, if you don’t mind me asking?”

The young Ensign looked back and responded, “Timothy, Doctor Timothy Frogue. I only reported on board recently.”

Doctor Frogue

“Nice to meet you, Doctor. We always need more medics, especially with how destructive my engineers are to themselves.” She grinned, before seemingly remembering something. “Oh, uh. I’m Andromeda Sentrya, the chief Engineer upon this humble abode. This is Ensign Ben Wylde, one of those snazzy scientists. But I probably shouldn’t say more, it isn’t so much my place.” She remarked, an underlying tone of awkwardness, but it was masked by a type of friendliness.

Smiling the young Doctor replied “Thank you Chief, I will try and patch everyone up as they show up. You know....that is what I am here to do!”

DOC

“True, true.” She chuckled, softly. “Anyways! Enough about work. Can I get you something to drink, Mister Frogue?” She offered.

Sentrya

“Yes, please that would be great. How about a diet Pepsi with no ice?”

Frogue

CE

“A death-by-sodium, coming right up.” Andromeda winked to say that she was joking, as she left the table. A few minutes later, she returned with the Diet Pepsi and BlackBerry Tea, for herself. “Here you go, Ensign.” She set it down, taking a seat.

Ben rose from behind the piano. “I apologise doctor, my reserved Englishness is doing me no favours at the moment. It’s a shock we’ve survived given our distinct inability to interact with others. I suppose I’ve already been introduced, nonetheless, I’m Ben Wylde. It’s very nice to meet you doctor.” He offered his hand.

-Ben Wylde
