<snip>Lieutenant Cewa blinked at Ensign Smythe from behind Idari’s shoulder, caught off-guard by the abrasiveness. The he looked around with his good eye to remind himself he was in engineering, and became less surprised by the demeanor. He hefted the bundle of equipment in his arms and looked around for a place to put them, starting to tire from the process of transversing the ship.

Jon heard the shifting machinery, sighed and turned to face the newcomers.
“How can I help you sirs?” he asked.

EngSolit sighed inwardly. His mother had repeatedly told him, “Whatever someone else is doing in the moment is always going to be more important to him than whatever you need him to do.” It seemed that this was the case right now. Still, this Ensign had at least stopped his work.
“Ensign,” he said to Smythe, “I am Commander Idari, and this is Lieutenant Cewa. We need help with repairs to this geologic survey equipment. Neither of us is particularly proficient with mechanical skills, and so require aid.”

Jon appraised the collection of equipment held by the scientists, and gestured to set it down on a nearby workbench.
“Do you have an idea what’s wrong with it?” he asked.

EngVeyn blinked. “I think we were hoping that you might be able to tell us what’s wrong with it,” he said with a hint of exasperation. But he set down the equipment he had carried from the cargo bay where Smythe indicated for inspection.

The equipment was badly damaged, the delicate science equipment had been utterly crushed by other things in the cargo bay. Ensign Smythe could hardly tell what the original purpose of the device he was trying to fix. He did identify some key computer chips which he pretty sure he had spares for, he hoped. Based on the various chips used, he could likely deduce that it was a geological survey device.

“I can tell you that repairing this might actually be impossible,” Jon said. “We might have some spare parts for a couple components, but I can’t promise 100% restoration.”

Veyn rubbed a hand over his mouth to hide his embarrassed expression. He might be no engineer, but he liked to think that he knew when technology was salvageable. Apparently, he did not. “We’re trying to prepare for a geological study of the surface of the island,” Lieutenant Cewa said as he dropped his hand. “Do you have any suggestions for how to modify what other machinery we do have with these parts to make that doable?”
