“I cannot say I agree with the Ensign, Captain, but I will follow your orders. Considering your orders, I think we should look at the communication array and see what needs to be done to fix that then…I mean for local communication. I mean if it is designed to work (under normal circumstances) to other ships and so on, it stands to reason that we could adapt it to our local use here.”

Riker

Natalie nodded “Let’s go. The sooner we get to work the sooner we can have at least ship wide communications back up and running.” She said “What if we revert to analog waves instead. Like a short wave radio?”

CO

“Logic would dictate that power be the first priority unless we have enough crew members to focus on both power generation efforts and local communication repair efforts,” said the NE Vulcan, “Without power, there is not much we can do to confirm whether the communication system is working or not.”

GM

Natalie nodded “Let’s start with the power issue and see what we can get going.” She said as she moved toward the main part of the saucer to see if they could do something to get main or even secondary power up and running again.

CO

Riker followed the Captain’s order and the suggest of the Ensign and went with the small group to see how they could get the power up. “Captain, what if we took parts from the warp engine to build a make-shift power generator?” inquired the CE.

Riker MacMoragh
Chief Engineer

“That may very well work.” She said “I’ll go down to main engineering and see what we can scrounge up to make work.” She said “Let see what we can come up with. Two minds are better than one.”

“Should I come with you, Ma’am?” inquired Riker

Riker

Natalie nodded “Yes, let’s go. Two minds are better than one.” She said trying to think of a creative way to at least get communications up and running and getting at least secondary power back up. Natalie looked at Riker “What are you thinking?” She asked.

OOC: Uh… if I’m recalling my Trek tech correctly, doesn’t a warp core require magnetic fields to operate to keep the anti-matter separate from matter in order to have a stable controlled reaction?

GM

OOC: It does. Natalie will see what other power cells we have that can be used to help with the power for the ship.

Tyra

When the Captain showed up in Main Engineering, an NE spotted her. “Ma’am? Is there something I can assist you with?” The dark unlit warp core only served to remind them the gravity of the current situation and how stuck they were.

GM

Natalie smiled “Power cells?” She said “Extra ones, also couplings.” She said thoughtfully and looked at Riker “What else?”

CO

“Power cells where what I was thinking about, Ma’am. Assuming they were not all destroyed in the crash” answered Riker.

Riker

“Power cells?” an exhausted-sounding voice came from the corner. “I don’t think we have anything bigger than one for a phaser right now, sirs?” Jon said, looking like he’d been working for more than 16 hours while at least a pint low on blood. Which, in fairness, he was.

It was that moment, two NE engineers hauled in a small crate. “We found some broken power cells – they are all damaged and out of power, but we do have enough to savage to make repairs on them. We also found some usage able power cells but they have no power. They were being charged, but discharged when the ship loss power. We estimate that if they were all charged, it’d give us enough power to activate the machine shop replicator and the backup computer to be able to manufacture the minimum parts needed to repair the current working fusion generator to give us sufficient power to potentially activate a standard replicator and keep the primary computer online. With a standard replicator, we might be able to generate the parts needed to fix another fusion generator or create parts to make a different type of electric generator that is less complicated. With two fusion generators at full power, we’d have enough power to attempt a warp core start but at a high risk of magnetic failure with no ability to transfer power to reinforce the magnetic fields.”

GM
Natalie listened as the two engineers gave a run down “Well. How long had the usable cells been charging before we lost power?” She asked as she thought about their current situation, she had to be missing something, somewhere…but what… She turned her attention back to her engineering crew “What if we harnessed the sun…solar charging panels, it might take a bit, but we can at least get the cells charged and then start getting things repaired.” She looked to the Chief “What do you think?” She asked, this was his department now, not her’s.

CO

OOC: A typical fusion reaction generates 2.13 * 10e8 kilowatts per hour for per 1 kg of fuel – according to http://www.ditl.org/article-page.php?ArticleID=26&ListID=Articles

IC:
“Not long, ma’am. My father worked on a historical solar power museum on Earth, Captain. A solar panel about 1 meter by 1.5 meters should generate approximately 990 watts per hour. Using a rotating mirror to reflect the sunlight to optimize the most sunlight, and spacing out the solar panels about .5 meters apart, and if we were to say, cover the entire hull of the ship, that would give us the space of approximately 12,152 solar panels, or 12 kilowatts per hour. It’d take us at least 3 days for us to set up anything like that, though. Unfortunately, to charge one of those power cells would probably take 1 to 3 months to charge one cell on solar power alone, Captain. It would allow us to get a single replicator in operation off of one charged cell, however, enough to make the parts needed to fix one fusion generator. We could follow a concentrated solar power model, which would increase the power efficiency output by 50%.”

OOC: I’m making the 50% number up about the power efficiency

GM

“The good news, Captain, is that such a solar power generator would be able to power the backup computer and likely power the communications array. But we’d only power during the daytime sufficient to do so, and wouldn’t be able to charge up the power cells at the same time,” remarked the NE, “At least we would be able to look at and perform limited analysis.”

GM

Listening to all the options the CE spoke up, “My thoughts, Captain, is that what if this sun is not as powerful as we think it is? We are assuming that this sun has the same fusion of hydrogen atoms (I looked it up to make sure I knew what I was talking about lol) that the earth’s sun does. What if it does not? What if the center of the sun is more than the 15,000,000 degrees of earth’s sun; could our equipment still function properly? I just don’t know. But, at the same time, I am not sure we have a lot of other options, either.”

CE

“There’s also the orbital rotation to consider,” Jon chimed in. “A longer day with a lower- power star might offset the difference, but a shorter day would make it harder. Do we know if Science got any data on the star on our way in?”

Ens. Smythe
Eng

OOC: Just want to explain something here.

I took the numbers of what a Star Trek Fusion Generator might output based on this fan page:
http://www.ditl.org/article-page.php?ArticleID=26&ListID=Articles

“The total mass of the initial two Deuterium atoms is 4.02726 u, equivalent to 3750.25 MeV. Since the reaction releases 3.2 MeV, it is therefore at most 0.08533% efficient in its conversion of mass to energy. Hence, for each 1 kg of fuel consumed by the Impulse system 7.67 x 10^13 Joules will be released.”

Based on that, fusion generators would be presumed to produce a great amount of power. A solar panel would be less, even if by the 24th century, material science might have made considerable improvements to do so.

I am also assuming that the power requirements for a replicator are larger than operating the computer and the communications array. You’d need the computer to use the replicator too. You could power electro-magnetic fields, but without the computer to guide for a controlled reaction to keep the anti-matter separate, the possibility for the warp core to explode would be high.

IC:

“Likely, but it’s in the computer and without the power to access it, we can’t make any detailed analysis. Our PADDs and tricorders can only do so much. We could probably scan the data and retrieve it, but it’d take a long time, and consume a lot of the power for our portable devices for which we don’t have a charging solution at the moment. Aside from solar power, there are other possibilities to create generators to make electricity that could help with the power shortage, but only to get various low power systems back into operation,” said an engineering NE, “Short of making a 20th century nuclear power generator, as for power options go, there’s not many to get the warp core started so we can have sufficient power. Mr. Zank might have parts that we might be able to use that might be compatible, but the away team dealing with Mr. Zank hasn’t reported back yet.”

GM

Hearing all the available information, Riker looked over at the CO and said:

“Your orders Captain?”

OOC: I am not sure how to respond here. I don’t want to go to far off the reservation.

Riker

BUMP

Not wanting to counter act his superior officer, the NE waited for the Captain to respond.

GM

Jon likewise looked to the Captain for her decision, trying not to fall asleep on his feet.

Natalie looked at the team assembled “Let’s start small. Set up two panels and see what we get from that. If we get some power, then we can look at more. I am not fond of staying here for another three months if we don’t have to.” She said “Start putting the fusion generators together with what parts we have and if we can start charging the useable ones with solor power then we’ll be a step ahead.” She said “We’ll need to worry about the magnetic locks on the warp core if we try to start it without enough power.” She said

Looking at the group assembled “We need to prioritize, life support and secondary computer systems and communications.” She said “Let’s get started on the solor panels and the generators and see what we can come up with.” She said optimistically.

CO

Riker followed the Captain’s orders and looked over at the team,

“You heard the Captain, let’s get started” he said.

Riker

The engineering scrambled to work. The hardest problem right now was figuring out how to make a solar panel or find materials to make a solar panel.

~ Fast forward a day ~

The engineering team labored hard and produced its first solar panel. The measured charge was less than a standard efficient solar panel they could get from a replicator, but it provided power – 250 watts per hour.

GM

Kanina ran into engineering, medkit slung over her shoulder. “I’m sorry I took so long! I’ve been all over the ship.” She was interrupting, but she was okay with that in this case. “Is anyone hurt?”
-Kanina

“I think everyone is okay here, doctor. Any one want to be checked out? asked the CE.

Riker MacMoragh
CE

Kanina stood awkwardly in the doorway. “Thank the Four. This was the last place on my list. Fewer people than you’d expect are injured, considering we crashed.” She smiled.
