“The nanoprobes are produced by certain sub-mechanisms within my bionic organs. The organs are maintained by the nanoprobes. It is a cycle,” GLaDOS explained. “Your idea might be possible, but it would be difficult. Nanoprobes are notoriously resilient. Why do you think the Federation has yet to stop the Borg?”

She let out a small sigh and leaned back on the biobed, closing her eyes for a moment. “Would that I could just rid myself of all of this. It may work to reconstruct the arm, but my internal organs may not be so easy. How does one replace half of a heart?”

Doctor Kastil leaned back slightly to think on some ideas for a long moment. “Depends, how do you feel about cloning and how intact are your base genetics?” Doctor Feira clapped excitedly at this idea. “Oh I do love a good ethics debate.” The doctor rolled her eyes at the Denobulan scientist that was getting excited for what she felt were the wrong reasons. “Replacing organs will be easier than you suspect, regrowing damaged or lost organs is something Starfleet has been doing for a while now. We can’t do full limb replacement like you are attempting to do but once your limbs are back, the organs will be easy enough. The next major question being how much Borg do you wish to retain?”

“As for why the Federation haven’t beaten the Borg, that would be because of poor tactics on our part, powerful technology on their part, and a lack of desire for compromise on both our parts. Hence why the fight with the Borg is still ongoing.” The doctor and her counterpart fit the scrubber to GLaDOS and start the process. “How do we safely dispose of the extracted nanoprobes?”

  • Doctor Fey Kastil

GLaDOS chuckled lightly. “A large part of my neural processing has been taken over by the Borg systems, which are maintained in part by scattered components all over my body. I have been working for the past few years to determine the exact balance, what components could be replaced and which are… more essential. I do not relish the idea of losing my mental faculties just because I replaced the wrong mechanical component with a biological one. I have determined that the components in my arm were not connected to neural function, which is why I started with that.”

She flexed her arm slightly, staring at the connection between skin and metal. She ran her hand along the connection. “If you are curious as to how I am doing this, I can show you in my quarters. I have a set up. When on the Viking, I and the ship encountered… a different world. It was a parallel universe where everything about the Viking was… better. They were the flagship of their Federation, and my Mirror was a diplomatic officer, an Ambassador from her civilization. She gave me some of her - my - pure genetic material and a method that her - our - species had developed to do such a thing as regrow a limb. They’d tried it on humans and it… didn’t work out. It concerns certain aspects of our ancestral biology. We evolved from a species that could regenerate limbs, so it is as simple as causing those genetic markers to re-activate.”

“As far as disposing of the nanoprobes - isolate them in a Radiation Room and douse them with 20 kJ of Omicron Radiation for a minimum of sixty seconds or more, then incinerate them. It is overkill but it is better than infecting the ship with Borg.”

There are other questions that could be asked, but the doctors decided to wait for now. Instead, they monitored GLaDOS’s bio signs to make sure she had a stable amount of blood and fluids in her system. “I’d love to see your setup someday, I’ve been trying to develop a process to regrow lost limbs since my Academy papers. On to other topics, what are you fields of specialty?”

  • Doctor Fey Kastil

The device began to run, slowly pulling dark blood out of GLaDOS’s body and pushing a rich purple blood back into her system. “I mostly studied cybernetics, exobiology, and xenolinguistics in my Academic days, but I have been doing a lot of study into Anomalous biology recently. My current research is regarding my own biology and how ways that my body reacts to infections and other stimulus can be adapted into medical and other applications. For example… The arm. I am not at a point where I am ready to share the minute details, but generally speaking it is going fairly well.”

Fey nods along with GLaDOS’s announcement of her specialties, appreciating a fellow academic. “My own majors are in Quantum Chemistry, Genetics, Xenobiology, and Federation Law. I am currently working on Biochemistry, Radiology, Dentistry, and Child Healthcare.” Fey smirks a little, knowing she’s bragging a bit. “Problems with being a genius, always ambitious to know more.” Doctor Fey watches the device again to make sure things are working as they should and the nanoprobes are not trying to infect the device. “What have your goals been of late?”

  • Doctor Fey Kastil

GLaDOS nodded slightly, impressed. “You have a several year advantage over me. Despite the age that I am, I only have just over a decade of conscious thought under my belt. Odd to think that a person with such a low amount of total experience is in charge of the Science Division of an ARU ship, but who am I to complain. I basically get free reign to research whatever I want within the ARU’s purview.”

The filtration machine was working its magic, a small electrical current stunning the nanoprobes. GLaDOS watched Kastil for a moment before replying to the question. “I am uncertain as to what you mean by goals. I am studying my own biology and that of my species, what I’ve learned from the data my mirror self provided. My current goal is to learn more about how I function as a xenobiological specimen. And another goal I suppose is to continue the regrowth of my arm until I have finished it.

GLaDOS, CSO

Doctor Fey eventually did take a sample of clean blood for study and replication in case of an emergency, making sure to scan it several times to be sure it was free of nanoprobes. “This sample will be included in your medical file and will be treated with the same level of secrecy as per usual, so if you ever want to reclaim it just let me know. I’m quite sure your unique species will prove difficult to find a donor, so I’ll work on synthesizing some just in case. Are you mostly carbon-based like the majority of us?”

  • Doctor Fey Kastil

Glados nodded in affirmation of the question. “Yes, Doctor. I have not yet met a corporeal species which is not carbon-based. I have heard of the Horta, but they are the only ones I know of.”

GLaDOS, CSO

The doctor nods and sets the sample aside. “In that case, I suggest you enjoy a good book until the process is complete. You’re free to go until your next cleaning is due. I’ll be sure to forward you Ensign Feira’s schedule so you know when she is available for you, I’ll keep her easily accessible so she can help with the cybernetics when possible.”

  • Doctor Fey Kastil

GLaDOS nodded slightly. “When you are available, I am certain you will be interested in my arm regrowth project. I have the equipment set up in my quarters, so feel free to come by and ask for a demonstration at any time.” She watched quietly as the nanoprobe blood levels went down, finally reaching an acceptable level, at which point she allowed the doctors to stop the Dialysis machine and helped them clean up the tubing that carried her blood back and forth.

With everything cleaned up and the nanoprobes properly destroyed, the Doctor signed off for the Chief Science Officer. “Thank you for coming in, you are clear for duty.”

  • Doctor Fey Kastil

GLaDOS nodded slightly, then stood. “I will be back regularly. And extra if I find my levels getting put of acceptable parameters.”
