Durheim took a moment to consider the question - taking in the Lieutenant’s patches and rank, his practiced response of ‘I don’t think I’m allowed to tell you about that’ remained unsaid. “I don’t intend to be avoidant of your question, Ma’am; but my placement here is directly related to incident 31543254B-51A; involving long-term… exposure, let’s say, to an Anomaly. Due to the ARU’s insistence of compartmentalization; which I do applaud; I am unsure of how much I may reveal. At the… Conclusion of that incident, I was given an opportunity to provide my expertise to the organization, which I gladly agreed to. It seemed like a wonderful chance to dive headfirst into this fascinating world!” Jonathan’s eagerness was genuine and plain to see; though only time would tell if it was based in naivety.

Casela raised a brow and help up her ARU Abell level clearance ID. “The ARU would be very lax if they didn’t put a counselor on board that had the clearance to speak to the crew about what they are doing and what may be troubling them. And those in charge of the ARU are not stupid.” Frustrating and dismissive, but not stupid. “If you don’t wish to directly discuss it I can always pull the file later.” She walked over to the LCARS interface on the wall of the corridor and tapped in a couple of commands. “Now the computer will lock the recording of our stroll for only the highest clearance. You can feel free to talk or we can go to my office where it is equally secure but has a door we can shut.”

Jonathan was silent for a moment before responding in a thoughtful tone. “I think… I’m willing to discuss the incident, but I’d like to do so in your office. As well as heightening the sense of privacy, that will give me time to collect my thoughts and memories on that time.” Gesturing at his arms and self, he continued. “I was severely injured during that incident; what you see here is the result. Related, I suffered some trauma-based memory loss; but no baseline scans exist as a comparator - it is impossible to know the full extent of the damage.” A note of frustration and anger had entered Jonathan’s voice. (OOC: If Casela is reading Jonathan’s emotions as a Betazoid, he would read as angry and perhaps saddened over the loss of his memory; but there would be remarkably minimal trauma over the physical injury.)

Casela took note of the emotions he was projecting and nodded, “We will make an appointment for that later. After you get settled and are ready. There is no rush. We’re all on this boat together.”

She nodded, “I can see how this is an interesting opportunity for engineering and science officers. Medical too. We have a unique crew here, filled with diverse individuals.” Okay if Casela was being honest, that wasn’t true. The more she did these evals, the more she realized the crew was not diverse, all of them, herself included, were crazy and misfits and they all had secrets to too keep, or secrets they wanted to reveal just to prove they were right. “So I know what you are looking forward to. Tell me what skills you think you bring to the ship to make our missions more successful?”
Lt Synthi-er, CNS

“Well, I have no delusions of grandeur; there is much I don’t know, but I suppose I have extended experience with containment and power systems based around an anomaly, though that is admittedly within a very specific application. Beyond that, I learn fast, and I come aboard with limited preconceptions; as I do not have a ‘traditional’ education. And as you can see, I also have talent with cybernetics; though I’ll admit to an unreasonable amount of luck on my behalf.”

“We have a lot of different departments on this ship, Mr. Durheim. Often times they but heads. Tell me how is your ego? Will it withstand to ignore those that take a more petty approach are do you have a strong need to prove to everyone where their place is?”

“Hmmm. I have found that people tend to demonstrate where their place is; or at times, where it should be. Only rarely have I found a need to do that for them. Hmph.” Jonathan shook his head slightly with the exhalation; as if in dismissal of some invisible fool. “I can’t abide ignorance or pigheadedness; at least not without reason. If someone claims to be right, I expect them to prove it - preferably, by putting their own arse on the line; if you’ll forgive my rudeness.” Gesturing at himself for emphasis, “I have done so repeatedly - and suffered failure as much as success. Progress cannot be made without risk; and respect cannot be earned by proxy.”

“A good outlook, to be sure. And it will serve you well on this ship. And though that gives me a sense of your own mental state there is something I want you to consider for your own awareness. What will you do if someone should try to force their misplaced importance on you? We’ve already had that happen once on board. It resulted in brig time, security details, and many hours in my office. I want you to be aware. Tensions run high and it can get to the best of us.”

“Hmm, I can tolerate that, up to a point. My place in the world has been made clear; even if I may not agree with it at all times, I do understand the reality.” And how to work around it…

While they talked she took him on a tour of the ship. Stopping first by his quarters so he would be able to find them easily, and stopping briefly on the engineering deck, she showed him the lounge and warned him to protect Cobb’s fish at all costs. They passed briefly by the counseling deck and then the holosuites and trainingg areas. She pointed out the ARU and RTF decks. And then they stopped on the medical deck.

Jonathan paid close attention during the tour; trying to at least cement a sense of the ship’s layout, if not outright memorize it. Dryly, he thought to himself Hopefully there won’t be a pop quiz… Those tend to be pass/fail.

Aloud, he asked “Is our time at an end, Ma’am? I have very much so enjoyed meeting you; and I appreciate the time you have shown me.” Once more, he extended his arm, this time in farewell.

Casela shook his hand without hesitation. She’d spent too much time working only with AARM units for his prosthetics to bother her. “Yes we are done Crewman. And here is sickbay so you can get your medical check in finished. As far as for me, you’re cleared for duty. Be sure to schedule that other appointment in the next couple of weeks.”
Lt. Synthi-er, CNS

“Of course Ma’am; I’ll get that done shortly.” Durheim smiled; he had quite enjoyed meeting the Counselor - she seemed to be quite aware of the realities and limitations of life aboard the Leviathan - something to be appreciated for sure.
