In that moment, Casela was reminded why she respected Cobb so much. That simple word “we” shoed a unified decision on their part, and behind the blank mask she wore, she appreciated it. She stepped over towards his desk and picked her PaDD up and glanced at it briefly. “I received a report from a colony on Delotha, on the outer edge of Federation territory. Incidences of practical jokes gone wrong, and much too contemplated for the age of the children committing the pranks.” She looked at the PaDD and read, “Carlin was pushed down in the yard by Vedi, a few hours later Vedi tripped and his leg was broken. Mecona stole Julin’s snack. The next day Mecona choked on his breakfast and the medic almost didn’t make it in time.” Then she glances at Cobb, “Those aren’t all that is reported, and perhaps isolated they aren’t of concern. All these incidents revolve around children living in the orphanage, or who had been living there.” Casela pauses here and looks at each of them. “The most disturbing is a little girl, only 2 years old, who is walking around town with her mother, after being teased about being an orphan. Her mother died in childbirth.”

Icarus was about to say that it seemed simply to be nothing more than kids pranking each other, but the seriousness and ages involved in the retaliation caused him to hold his tongue.

“The captain and I feel that it is worth determining if this is an anomaly or not. The captain asked who I wanted to take. That is why you are here. Feel free to decline.” Casela didn’t want anyone along who didn’t want to be there. “This is a border world, so no uniforms. They trust Star Fleet about as much an Orion Slave trader. You’ll be there for one purpose. A team brought in by a woman named Zanya to assist the village with whatever they need. Tell them her name and no one will question you, for the most part. Keep to what you know, security, engineering, medicine, people skills. McHarrie how are your cosmetic surgery skills? The Cmdr and I will need some before we leave. Trills and Betazoids are too easy to recognize.” She turned to look at the captain. “I’d like to leave as soon as Bog is done.”
Lt. Synthi-er,

“My skills are good enough to fool a stand-alone non-medical tricorder. A sub-dermal translator can be difficult to hide from any tricorder, so it may be best to use an in ear device disguised as a hearing aid?” John offered

“This is more than just pranks going wrong and if it continues, someone is going to end up more seriously injured than a broken leg. The safety of these kids, these orphans, is at stake, you can count me in, Lt. And I promise it’ll be all business.”

The children being orphans hit close to home for Icarus. He had been an orphan himself after his parents disappeared, from the age of about 10 to 17. He could definitely relate.

Remington (CIO)

Casela nodded to Remington. She would have to warn him about the Romulan orphan who was there. Hmmm…on that note she might need to warn Raauhl as well. This would have been so much simpler if she’d gone alone.

The captain fell into silence and allowed Synthi-er the floor as she laid out the details of the operation. Moments of quiet such as this were increasingly rare, but they allowed him to observe and take note of how skilled and talented his crew truly was. Of course, sending so many of his best people off the ship at one time was an unavoidable cause for concern. But chasing anomalies was their business, it was why they were here on this ship. And for more than one in this room, it was the only reason they had been allowed to remain in Starfleet at all.

“I would appreciate if you could start on the surgical alterations straight away, Mr McHarrie,” he decided to add his own voice at last. “As Lt Synthi-er says, the urgency of this mission can not be understated. If she is correct and this is an anomaly at work, then the more information you can all gather, the more chance we have of neutralising it before it can harm anybody else.”

He got to his feet in order to stretch his legs a little, something about pacing always fitting when delivering assignments like this.
“The Leviathan will take up a position within a day or two’s distance for shuttle travel. We must balance providing assistance with remaining undetected. I will have Manhattan prepare an RTF ground team should the situation require such intervention but…it is my sincere hope that it will not come to that.”

“Captain, if I may,” she nodded to his console, and with his permission, she brought up a star chart of the area. “Here, a day and half flight is a large nebula. The chemical and natural telemetry of it makes it hard to get readings. All studies have required a science shuttle to enter to get data. I’ve hidden there many times, and the interference is enough to even hide Levithan. If you need something closer,” she zooms in on the system, “There is a large asteroid field on the outer edge of the system. Some are big enough, Levi could actually land and power down.”

“So,” he paused at the large viewing window that made up the whole of his left wall, then turned to face the officers once again. “Questions? For myself or Lt Synthi-er?”

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

Ryder didn’t have any, well none that he desperately needed answering right now and most of those questions were towards what that might find when they arrive. The whole situation left him with a bitter taste in his mouth. “None from me, I’ll head straight to medical if there isn’t anything further to discuss?”

  • Lieutenant Cmdr Raauhl

“Aye, as long as Lt Synthi-er has nothing more to add for you then you’re dismissed.”

The Captain turned to address the rest of the gathered officers, paused, allowed a seemingly troubling realisation to drift through his consciousness and then returned his attention to his First Officer.

“And Commander,” he added in a low voice, “you are to go directly to medical. No…ah…detours along the way. Understand?”

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

Raauhl gave the Captain a knowing look, to hide his spots were somewhat frowned upon but for the betterment of the mission, he was willing to forgo the objections and do as he was ordered. “Yes Captain, of course.” He looked to see if Casela or anyone else had anything to add.

She runs through the details, “The weather will be cooler. There is room in the shuttle for whatever equipment you need. I suggest rugged travel packs and not Star Fleet standard cases. And non standard issue weapons.” She looks over at the captain and dead pans, “Don’t worry Cpt. I have an excellent sense of direction. I’ll make sure he doesn’t get lost.” And waiting for everyone to get going, Casela then heads to Bravo sickbay for McHarrie to get started.
Lt. Synthi-er, CNS

Raauhl waited a moment allowing all the other staff to leave before himself departing, he fell into step besides Casela. “This is going to be interesting.” He said quietly to both the mission and the transformation he was about to go through.

Casela walks a moment with him and then as the corridor clears she stops and turns to him. The armor and mask slipping for a moment. “I could use you on this. Your science skills are invaluable and so are your diplomatic skills. The particular village we are going to is pretty open but the colony world itself is easily spooked. I’ll even admit to wanting your fighting skills. I’d like you along, but I understand if you don’t want or can’t justify going. I know it goes against everything to hide your spots.” She takes a critical look at him. “Maybe you don’t have to. Trills are easily identifiable, but maybe you can change your hair, eye color, have McHarrie change the shape of your jaw line, or something similar. Enough changed that you look like a different person. You’ll need a really good reason why a Trill is wandering the border colonies though. And don’t tell them the name of your symbiot.” He was proud of who and what he was and she didn’t want to take that away. She also wanted him to be safe. “The village trusts me, well trusts Zanya, and so they won’t ask, but it isn’t just people from the village, but others as well.”
LT. Synthi-er, CNS

“I’ll come,” he said simply appreciative of the comments this was obviously something she cared a great deal about and wanted to show he supported her both professionally and personally. “Sacrifices need to be made and I wouldn’t want to put the mission at jeopardy because I was to proud to undergo temporary alterations. I can cope for a few days without them.” Ryder gave Cas a positive smile as they entered the turbo lift.
