Zachariah chuckled at the conversation between Bog and Gen. The teenager seemed to possess a maturity far beyond her visible age and, not for the first time, Cobb found himself wondering on the events that had forced her to grow up so fast. But this was not a night for soul-searching, it was for fun and, in that exact moment, most definitely for food.

Finding a large picnic-style table, Cobb led the group over and then settled himself onto the left-side bench. Almost immediately, an impossibly tall and fully cloaked figure drifted over to them and, bringing a large, gleaming scythe down between them, settled its point on a menu.
“The special tonight is roasted ox,” it hissed as if a thousand voices were speaking at once. “We also have a selection of hamburgers, hotdogs, candy floss, baked potatoes, blooming onions and funnel cake. I, myself, can highly recommend the gagh.”

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

Casela sat down next to Gen. The image of the Grim Reaper drew her fascinated gaze. This image a little too close to recent events, and too welcome a friend. “Now this spectacle is more than convincing. Is he offering us our last meal?” The good natured challenge at the programed visage obvious. But the voice of the Reaper, was a little too accurate for her comfort. Casela contemplated getting the gagh just because, but she really couldn’t stand the stuff. She’d eaten it plenty when need be, but she never could get over the fact that her food was still alive while she chewed it. “I will have the roasted ox. And I think a funnel cake with powdered sugar and chocolate.” She winked at Gen, “We need more sweets.” She looks back at the Reaper, “And maybe a blooming onion for Mr. Bog. It will make his breath smell better.”
Lt. Synthi-er, CNS

“Add the potato and the Gagh and something appropriate to drink; if you can.”
Bog sat back to study the skeletal apparition. “I admire your work, Captain.”

Bog

“Oh, I can’t take full credit for it, Mr Bog,” Cobb admitted. “It’s a self-configuring program created from my own childhood memories of similar events and then allowed the holographic space to interpret those memories as it sees fit.”

Pausing so that the Tellarite could process what he had just described, Zachariah turned to the Reaper and ordered a hamburger, fries and a bottle of whiskey. Then, facing the engineer once more, he added;
“Does it surprise you to learn that your captain would place you at the mercy of a horror-themed artificial intelligence?” He chuckled. “It is Halloween, Mr Bog and, as the old saying goes, everyone is entitled to one good scare.”

Casela winked at Gen, “He’s a good sport. What are you going to eat, Gen?” From down the path rustles, moans, shrieks, and thudding vibrations could be heard coming from the forest. Casela looked down the path and back at Cobb. “You made a haunted forest?” She rubbed her hands together gleefully. “I’m starting to understand the human fascination with this Halloween of yours.”
Lt. Synthi-er, CNS

“As I just explained to Mr Bog, I didn’t make anything,” Cobb replied. “I am as much a tourist to the evening’s events as you are. However,” he added with a wink towards Gen, “I do know there is a ‘ghost train’ over in the upper left corner. Perhaps we should all ride it once our meal is done.”

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

“Surprised? No. But I do want to peek under the hood. I can think of a lot of uses for the neural architecture.” Bog set back a moment considering the implications beyond a holo character or an EMH. “Real Ghost busters assisting the ARU for one thing.” The Tellarite smiled as he resisted the urge to add that particular bit of fun to the Captains party.

Bog

“I bet you do,” Zachariah chuckled, before adding with a shrug, “Help yourself to the codebase whenever you like, Mr Bog. As long,” he was quick to insist, “as we have all vacated the scenario first.”

Casela winked at Bog and then turned a mischievous and wicked grin on the captain. “Oh but where would be the fun in that?” She turned back to Bog, “Whatever you come up with, I’d be happy to test out for you. Captain you should see what he’s done with my shuttle. Engineering genius. You need to come down to the shuttle bay and see it for yourself.”

Gen watched the reaper quietly and spent some time glancing about and eating her apple before she finally asked it for a hot dog and smiled at Casela’s suggestion of more sweets. She swing her sock clad feet slightly and watched the apparition go forth for their food. ”The real ones scythe is bigger.” she commented lightly and bit into her apple, her luminous eyes glowing faintly. Then added, looking at Cobb ”Whats a ghost train?”

Gen

Casela didn’t miss Gen’s mention of a real Reaper or the indication that she’d seen him for herself. At this point, Casela would not be surprised that Death was an anomaly and after them all in some way. Rather than the abstract concept that most spoke of in familiar terms. There was a lot that Gen had been through and Casela knew, she and Gen had a long way to go. One being the bruises that never faded around her neck and throat.

“I’d presume a train where one sees ghosts, but you never know, right?” Surda stepped up to the table with a small smile. She wore all black, with small swirls of silver on her jacket. It was the sort of attire one would see on the captain of an Orion pirate ship, complete with built in body armor. “I’m Surda.” She stuck her hand out to the teen, more or less ignoring the rest of the table.
-Surda

Gen looked at the hand offered to her then up at it’s owner, taking in her red hair, her outfit and then back to the hand. Slowly she turned her half eaten candy apple and deposited it into Sundra’s hand. ”Gen.” she said, expression stoic.

Gen

Casela wasn’t sure if she should laugh or not. Poor Gen and Surda, neither had any idea who they had decided to interact with. She passed several napkins to Surda and took the sticky, half eaten candy apple and threw it away. She was sure Gen knew that Surda had not been offering to take her ‘trash.’ Gen had a wicked sense of humor at times, and Casela loved it.

Cobb grinned, glad to see his new Security Chief throwing herself into the few social activities their hectic schedules allowed.
“Ah, Miss Surda, thank you for joining us,” he got to his feet and indicated towards an empty space at their table. “I take it you are already familiar with the rest of the crew or…” he cast a glance towards Old Nick and his Gremlin friend, “perhaps visual recognition is not so easy right now. But just use your nose, eh, and you’ll soon find that here we have Mr Bog and Mr Durheim, the Leviathan’s best engineers. And here, perhaps you have met already, is our Counselor, Lt Synthi-er. And of course, you have just become acquainted with our…well, our…” he rubbed at the back of his neck while studying Gen, wondering how best to describe her, “…our mascot and ship’s good luck charm, eh?” he winked at the teenager.

Casela liked the idea of Gen being their good luck charm. Certainly she had given Cobb and herself plenty of insight into some of the anomalies they were dealing with. And honestly she liked the way Cobb was around the girl. He claimed children didn’t like him or he them, but she didn’t buy it for a minute. Of course, she wasn’t about to admit what the rest of the crew new. That she was much different around Gen as well. The child was certainly a beloved by the crew.

Then, reversing the gesture, he pointed at the dazzling pirate and announced, “For those who have not yet had the pleasure, this is our new Chief of Security, Surda. Be gracious please, gentlemen, or it looks like she might just lash you to the masthead,” he laughed.

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

Casela let out a deep and joyous laugh. Something rare for her. “Oh I’d like to see that. By all means Surda, if you do please let me watch. Perhaps between the two of us we can turn the…’gentlemen?’ of this ship into something worthy of the title.” Casela would welcome any woman strong enough to help put this crew in their place.
Lt. Synthi-er, CNS

The girl waited watching the adults interact with one another. Her head tilted slightly as she considered the new woman. Carefully she reached a clean band to Surda’s outfit and traced the silver swirles. ”I like your outfit” she said.
