Petall was an inquisitive girl and it was obvious she was fascinated by Bog. Zanya and Karra had tried to teach her about Tellarite social customs and personalities. Not because they expected her to fall into that norm, but because they wanted her to understand where she came from and not be offended when she finally met another Tellarite. She had been waiting for Karra to leave the room. “Ms Karra, can I take him to the power shed? I’ll help. I promise! I won’t get in the way.” Karra sighed. Petall was eager to learn and would help the engineer, but she wasn’t a natural at it. But what she lacked in instinct she made up for with determination and hard work. Karra nodded, “As long as…Sparky is willing to let you go.”

Patell practically skipped into the back room. Casela knew what she hoped, it was what each of the children hoped for. Karra knew it too, but it was her call to let them be around the strangers or not. And one thing was for sure, Sparky could teach Patell a lot. She looked at Bog, “You tinker types always get lost. I’ll show you where you need to go. Come on!” Patell didn’t bother to ask, afraid he’d say no. Once outside she took the most convoluted way around the village just to prove that he’d get lost. In actuality the power shed was a simple walk to the center of the village and then directly north. Along the way Patell made sure to point out where lights weren’t working, the irrigation systems were spotty because the power flow was bad, the shield generator didn’t work, and most importantly, “The school computer doesn’t always work and we can’t find the information we need.” She stopped in front of a door. “This is the power shed.” She opened the door and by the sounds coming from inside, it sounded like the generator was taking its last breath.

Bog was irritable, belligerent and impatient even buy Tellarite standards the only marginally sane person who would trust him with a child was Casela. She already new he had a softer side, especially when it came to children from his dealings with Gen.

he patiently listened to the girl, the rout she chose actually was useful, as it allowed him a better idea of the needs and power distribution system he was working with.
“What in the Geonadian Hells would make a cold fusion reactor make such noise?!” Bog opens the door and all is made clear, it’s not a fusion reactor at all but an ancient radioactive decay fueled sterling cycle generator. His peaple hadn’t used them in well over three centuries, and he doubted any of the founding races of the federation had either.

The Tellarite stood mouth agape at the ancient machine as it wheezed and coughed like a dying man with emphysema. Once he took stock of the situation, he brought out his tricorder to scan the antique before attempting to repair the beast.

Sparky

This particular generator was a Advanced Stirling radioisotope generator. With a more than 14 year typical life span this one had still long outlived it’s days. It had probably been acquired second hand. The telemetry cables were frayed in several places, the gas management valve was cracked meaning it was essentially stuck open, the alternator was simply old and worn, the insulation needed replacing causing the whole unit to be running at a higher temperature than it should, the cold-side adaptor flange was damaged from the excessive heat where the insulation had failed to do it’s job. This lack of a cold temperature was causing the piston to not move correctly and now the power output was failing.

Patall heard his exclamation and grumbled. “It’s the best the village leaders could get. The old governor wouldn’t replace the old one when it broke. So when he was gone we rigged power from his estate until it broke. By then they had enough money to finally get one, but this was all we could get. Bolahfur does a really good job keeping it going, but he’s not really a mechanical engineer. I can go get him for you.” Patall had great pride in her village, but she knew the generator was horrible. She could hear it struggling for life all the way to the orphanage very night.

It would be easy to replicate spares or in fact simply replace the failing unit with the replicators on the shuttle, unfortunately to do so would compromise there cover. The fusion pack in his kit would not support all the systems, but then again the generator wasn’t either. “Please do, Pattal. I need to know what materials we have available that I can adapt to raking a little more life out of this decrepit old thing.”
Installing the fusion pack, he began connecting the most critical circuits. This would buy him some time but he would have to scrounge up parts to restore the the old beast, and then see if he could cohoe to together something more reliable.
Bog

Petall nodded and ran off into the village. It didn’t take her long to return with an ageing Andorian. “Sparky this is Bolahfur.” The old Andorian looked at Petall, “Alright, shoo, off with you.” Petall, trying to impress the only other Tellarite she’d ever seen pulled herself up, “Ms Karra said I was to help. You aren’t brave enough to tell her she was wrong!” Bolahfur’s antennae started swaying rapidly around his head. He looked mean and took a step toward her but when Petall only backed up further into the shed she shook his head. “Ah” he grumbled, “you’re probably right. Karra’s as mean as a snake.” He turned to Sparky, “I understand you arrived with Zanya. Must know what you’re doing or she paid you a lot and promised you more so you’ll work hard. Petall said you need parts. What I’ve got is in that locker over there. When we run out of parts we go to the old governor’s house and scrounge what we can find and hope it works. I’m a structural engineer by training, but stuff like this is beyond me, really. I’ve done the best I can to keep it going.”

“It is a miracle the decrepit thing is still running, Bulahfur. You seem to have done ok. Unfortunately this old girl needs a compleat overhaul and that would only buy us a decade. Let’s see what you have here and what we can scrounge up to overhaul this beast and then talk about a better solution.” He went to the cabinet as he spoke, beginning to add its contents to the innovatory he already had. The least he had to replicate from the ship the least chance it would be located and their aforementioned cover blown.

Bolahfur nodded with a good natured rumbling chuckle. “It is. If we can get her another decade, I’d be grateful. The new mine is producing well these past few years, but that would give us time to save up more and get something more current. We had a cold fusion generator, before the old mine ran out.” He shrugs. There isn’t much he can do about it. The old governor really did a number on their village and the others as well.

“Let’s see what else we can scrounge up, show me to the Governors old power station, if you will.” Bog was already walking toward the door, either escort would do for this scavenger hunt.

Sparky

Bolahfur grabbed a bag and a tool belt and stepped out of the shed. He looked at Petall, “Back to Karra with you.” At her sign of protest the old Andorian became very stern. “No Petall. The manor and the mine are off limits. You aren’t going. I promise to let you help when we get back.” She tried again, “If it’s off limits why are you going? I’m almost an adult and you’re old! You might need help.” His antenna were moving in a very intimidating and scary way. “I said no. You aren’t even close to being an adult. If you were you would understand and respect the rules in place.” Petall looked at both the men and then turned and sulked off down the street.

He shook his head and lead the way out of the village. It was a good walk to get there. The house was falling down, nature trying to take back over. The wall, the out buildings and most sections of the house, weren’t just falling down, they were destroyed. The whole thing had been blown, violently. It was obvious why this was off limits to the children. What was still standing was at risk of collapsing. Except the power station. That had been spared. Bolahfur stepped through the rubble with the confidence of someone who had been there a lot. A mid design hydrogen fusion reactor stood in the power shed along with plenty of spare parts in lockers around the walls.

Looking around it became clear to the Tellerite it would be more practical to exchange the two units. Now how to do it with out using the ship’s transporters…
“Did the governor’s palace have a transporter? I have an idea…”
Bog

Bolahfur grimaced and looked around. “He did for moving heavy equipment out to the mines and other villages. But it may not have survived the explosions.” He pointed toward the back of the grounds. There was a cleared area, but no visible building left, except in the minute rubble of a massive explosion. Whatever this building was, it had been more than destroyed. There were over grown remains of a transporter system used for heavy cargo.

Bog smiled, well that made things easy. “ can you breath life into this old girl wile I see to the transporter?” Even if he couldn’t fix the transporter he can put in a good show and use the ship and a bit of stage magic.

Heading to the transporter pad he brought out the hand scanner, a tool shared medics and engineers. The pad was useless but much of the mechanism barked below was intact. It would take days to actually make it work on its own, but only a mater of hours to rig it function as a relay for the shuttles system. It should fool a structural engineer and make enough noise to camouflage their own systems emotions. If he was right it would take the engineer just about the same time to cold start the reactor. It might just work…

Bog the magician

Bolahfur saw what he was about, but paused. “Are you sure you want me to have her running when you move her? Maybe I should get her disconnected first and the same for the old system? I’ve jury rigged a lot of the lines it’s not going to be a simple swamp and that old reactor isn’t too stable to just transport it out.” He wasn’t a mechanical engineer though. He built buildings, furniture, not working things. But he began looking around, the reactor here would need a lot of parts replaced, he had salvaged off of it a lot over the years.
