As Cas began to swear in Italian, Jewels absently corrected one of her phrases, not thinking. “It’s andare a puttane (1) not andar,” she had corrected Cas a million times on the phrase as a child. “And I doubt anything’s gone ‘that’ wrong around here in some time. From what I’ve gathered, it’s been pretty quiet.” She quickly turned away so the other woman wouldn’t see her face. Something was between them, but Juliet kept pressing it back, refusing to let it out or speak of whatever it was. Unable to concentrate, she shook her head and started towards the racks to put her tonfas away. Unfortunately, there was no way not to pass within arm’s reach of Cas as she did so. “I’ll let you practice and come back in half an hour with the rest of the shift.” Her shields were wavering, and being tired wasn’t helping. The stress was something she was used to. So why was it suddenly so damned hard to keep her shields up against this woman?

(1) Andare a puttane (Italian swear phrase when something goes terribly wrong)

Casela froze, internally at the correction. Damn, either this was really Juliet or someone had done a spectacular job of back checking Casela. She watched as Juliet put the tonfas up and listened to her words. Oh no. She was not walking away from her. Something broke free and Casela, somewhere winced. Zachariah was going to have words for her, and Ryder…he’d just look at her with disappointment, and it was going to hurt, but she was who she was…or wasn’t…or…and it just fed her anger. “Juliet Arur, Sorellina, Uncle Jo’nar did NOT teach us to be cowards!” Awwww crap....she dropped the tonfas away from her before she did something REALLY stupid.

Shock froze her in her tracks. The words she heard made her react, but it was fear that guided that reaction. Without thinking, she reeled on the woman, now just a little over ten feet away. “I’m not her! And they’re all dead!” The words came out with such unshielded vehemence that they would not only be heard, but felt by Cas as well. She hadn’t truly meant to be so forceful, but the woman had dared to bring in family!

(wonders what rank is below Ensign at another Court Marshall lol)

Casela felt the wave before it hit her and her eyes widened in shock. It hurt! And the instinct to attack back was dangerous. She clenched her teeth. Juliet was lucky. If Cas hadn’t just faced something so much worse with Hampton not just weeks before she might have attacked without thinking. As it was the backlash wasn’t kind. But the memory of her small cousin looking up at her, trusting her, curbed her rage and shock. So the retaliation was more like a gut punch than a body slam. “Well I’m not Dead!” Casela moved, it was fast and it was shocking. Juliet was taller than her now, but Cas was a power house when needed. She went to grab her and push her to the wall. Her voice was low and growled out. The mental voice with it was none too nice either. “If you aren’t her then who the hell are you and who sent you?” She didn’t scream or yell. The calm in her voice was scary.
Lt. Synthi-er, CNS

Jewels froze as she realized her mental attack had actually shaken the Lieutenant. A moment of fear went thru her as another Court Marshall loomed in her vision. But it was swiftly disippated with the physical attack that caught her off guard and had her against the wall before she could react. Her own voice lowered to match the menacing pitch of the woman who pinned her. Jewels had grabbed onto Casela’s arms in reflex, but she hadn’t pushed back yet. It couldn’t be! It was a trap! Her mind screamed at her that there was no way this woman was family. They wanted her to mess up. To fight. To get in enough trouble they could ignore the Admiral’s saving orders to keep her in the Fleet and could finally be rid of her.

But none of it mattered. She swallowed hard to keep the water in her eyes from welling to the point of tears. She refused to cry. “I’m what’s left!” She growled back in a low tone. Both were nearly forehead to forehead. Knowing that merely ‘taking it’ would mean she was weak, and attacking back would show she was reckless, she chose a middle ground. Unable to get a good swing on her head because of the wall behind her, she slammed her forehead into Cas with enough force that she hoped the woman would back off. Unfortunately, she wasn’t thinking clearly and the words she spat out with the head butt were once more screamed into Cas’ mind despite the low verbal tone Juliet voiced. “Who sent you?” She would try and twist down and out from under the arm lock if the head but released the hold enough.

(oooops… my bad… NOT!)

Irida walked up to the holodeck along with the rest of the Black Devils. She was not surprised to find the program already running. “Synthi-er never sleeps. I’m telling you, she’s a drone or something.” Lehiw, the tall Klingon with a thing for the ladies laughed, “I know why she isn’t sleeping, she’s…”

Ujaw shoulder checked him, hard. “Shut up Lehiw. Last time you went on about her love life she put you through your paces and you couldn’t entertain the ladies for a month. She’s a fighter and good one. You dishonor her that way.” Lehiw shrugged and laughed. He did respect Synthi-er, but still she was a might woman and that was atractive. But everyone knew where her interests were. And honestly he was pleased for her.

Niven grunted, “Can we get to work please?” She glanced at Trainor. “At least Trainor doesn’t gossip. I’m training with him tonight.” Uj’aw frowned, “No look her woman, you’re my mate.” Niven raised one Vulcan eyebrow. “That’s why Synthi-er doesn’t let us train together.”

Irida chuckled. She loved gossip, as long as no one got hurt. It helped distract from the seriousness of the work. She stepped through the doors and she froze and swore in Russian. “Ummm....guys....” The sight of Casela with a death grip on another officer, the rage clear in her eyes....strangling…herself???!!!!

Niven took in the scene, “Who do we call? The other Angels or Cobb, Raauhl, and Manhattan?” The men on the other hand fanned out…if Casela was that pissed this…other Casela…”Ummm Lt. do we have an anomaly?” Uj’aw asked ready to try and trap the thing.

Casela never could stand for Juliet to cry, and she saw it. She saw the headbutt coming and had to take it, but she wrapped her hands harder into the woman’s shirt and as she went down she took Juliet with her. Landing on her back and then using the momentum to push Juliet up and over her head and she kept hold to land on top one knee helping to hold the woman in the stomach, but not hurting. Her voice reached right into Juliet’s mind. You aren’t! We thought we lost you. Dad’s been looking for years and so have I. Where did they hide you? And then the next thing Juliet ‘saw’ was Casela’s last happy memory of her. The last was from the Dominion and too easy to create. Juliet had managed to get a wild bird to come sit on her hand using her empathy that Casela was helping her to learn to control. It had been red and purple with a blood orange beak. They’d fed it uttaberries for over an hour. I’m here, Juliet. I’ll help if you need it. I’m not leaving. We never did.

Casela took in the Black Devils and groaned internally. If they called anyone she was so ending up in the brig. Crap.

The arrival of everyone meant she hadn’t braced for the toss. Landing on her back with an audible grunt, she grabbed automatically at Cas’ sides to try and roll her mid toss. But she was blind with rage and pain and wasn’t thinking. She was on her beck, knee to her gut before she could think and react. The images were so clear that, for just a moment, she actually heard the bird’s song.

“NNOOOO!” It was too much. Too much time without proper sleep. Too much time in Court Marshals and Hearings. Too much time on the shuttle to get here and too much time looking over her shoulder. As the others spoke of containment, it didn’t occur to her they thought her an anomaly. Her first instinct was to protect herself from being caught.

The second No she screamed carried a psychic wave meant to shove anyone close by out of the way. If they were used to such things, the Devils wouldn’t do more than stagger. But at this close a range, it wasn’t even figuring into her mind what would happen to Cas. She just knew she was tired of being in the corner. And on her back had placed her there. “LIAR!!!” She screamed on the heels of the wave as she glanced back at Cas, tears streaming down her face as she tried to fight the visions being fed to her.

Niven, being Vulcan staggered, Uj’aw being her husband staggered because she had worked with him. Lehiw went back several paces same as Irida. Trainor…well he was Trainor and stoic as ever. However it affected him no one would know but him.

Cas though dropped and had the wherewithal to not loose her grip. It took a minute through the haze and pain, but Cas realized Juliet was sick, maybe no physically but she was. And the emotion killed her. She couldn’t take it. If this was a counseling session she’d sedate her. She came back up to kneeling and pulled Juliet towards her. Her hot-headedness not as under control as it should be. She sneered, realizing Juliet’s pain and heartache was so similar to her own and they were feeding off each other. Crap. “I am many things, Sorellina, but I have never lied to you.” And with all the control she could muster…and well she didn’t have as much as she should. GO TO SLEEP! Casela felt it rush out of her and she winced as she saw the thought hit Juliet. That was going to hurt. Crap!

She didn’t look away, “Stand down. She’s not an anomaly.”
Lt. Synthi-er, CNS

Jewels watched and felt the others stagger as Casela hoisted her close enough to feel her breath on her cheek. The words bit into her like a knife and the pain left her head reeling. No one called her that. NO ONE! But the moment the words were thought, she realized something else. Cas was her better in things. Always had been. The command to sleep slammed into her like the head butt of a Klingon. Cas has used it when they were younger and storms had frightened Juliet and kept her from sleeping. But this time the command wasn’t one meant to calm a frightened child. It was a command to shut down an enraged telepath. Her eyes only had a moment to go wide before her body went immediately limp in Cas’ hands. Only the tight grip on the front of her workout sweats had saved her head from crashing into the floor.

(AAAaannnn… she’s out…)

Awwww…crap. She shouldn’t have done that. She meant to, but she shouldn’t have. Crap crap crap. She gently lowered Juliet to the mat. She didn’t even look at the rest of her team. She was tempted to tell them to leave, but they’d already seen and she wouldn’t ask them to lie. But…”Irida I swear by the Great Fire if you start running your mouth over this, you won’t like what I have planned for you.”

Irida nodded. This was personal. The whole team could tell and Irida did like to gossip but she respected Casela too much to put something so deeply....personal didn’t cover it…out to the whole crew. She kept her mouth shut though. They should report this, but she couldn’t move to summon anyone. And who should she? Technically it would be Lt Cmdr Raauhl. He was in charge of ship’s discipline. But he’d deffer to Cpt Cobb because of their relationship. Maybe Cpt Manhattan? But they weren’t technically doing RTF training…Oh boy....Irida was of the mind to let them work it out themselves.

Casela sat down beside Juliet while she slept. She didn’t think it would be too long before she woke up. She took no mind of the team that simply sat and began running through possible scenarios of containment breaches. It was something they had started doing once a week since Dave had got out. It had been a harsh reality check for them all. But Casela could only stare at her cousin. Cobb had told her to let Remington deal with it. And she’d meant to, but she hadn’t expected Juliet to come here, and then walk away from her like that. Cas had issues, she knew that, but this one was bad and she’d never known she had it. But then she’d though Juliet had died or was so far gone from her she’d never see her again. She hadn’t realized that Juliet walking away like that would … would make her loose her calm. Crap....Cobb was going to be so disappointed in her. But she’d take it, whatever it was, because she deserved it.

A soft moan just short of five minutes later was the first indication that Jewels was coming around. It took another minute before her head lolled to the side and her hand slowly reached up to rub her temple as her eyes slowly opened. “What…?” She glanced at Cas and closed them once more, turning her head away from the woman. “I imagine I’m heading for the brig for this?” Her words were soft, but in the near silent room, the others would hear it too. Though she had temporarily forgotten about them.

The young Ensign rolled to her knees and rubbed her head as she rocked back on her heels to try and balance herself. “Should I report to the brig or the Chief?” She was sure whatever happened, this was her last day on the ship as an Ensign. She had crossed the line. She had attacked not just a Lieutenant, but the whole squad. She knew she had hurt some of them, she’d felt it. Though, for half a second, her head turned slightly to eye Trainor. He hadn’t budged, though she knew he had felt the slam as well as the others. A look of mild curiosity and no small amount of impressiveness lit her eyes before she glanced back towards Cas. “Your orders, Ma’am?” She still couldn’t admit Cas was her cousin. It all seemed too much, too fast. Maybe later, maybe tomorrow. But not today. Not here, and now. And certainly not like this in front of others.

Casela shook her head. She saw the smiles of the team when Juliet assumed she’d be going to the brig. “No Jewels you aren’t going to the brig or the Chief. Unless you want to report me. In this room we don’t stand on rank. I have no orders for you, Sore....Jewels.” Casela got up and returned with a medkit she kept in the room. She ran the tricorder over Juliet, not finding anything wrong she was satisfied she hadn’t hurt her, but she passed the tricorder and kit to Juliet to check for herself. There was also a selection of hypos in the kit she could use for the headache.

Jewels waved off the tricorder and ignited the hypos. The headache was welcome. It kept her grounded in the moment and, oddly, kept her clear headed.

Irida snikered, “Girl if Synthi-er didn’t get brig time for knocking out the XO you are good.” Uj’aw glared at her to keep her mouth shut. Casela didn’t say a word. The team wouldn’t betray her or Juliet. Everyone knew Casela was a hot head so if she was fighting someone…well there were a lot of reasons that could happen. So none of the team would hold it against Juliet. Most of them had ended up going one-on-one with Casela at some point. Sometimes for training other times to work out the stress that was their job. However several people kept tabs on Casela so she wouldn’t be surprised if someone came in and had words for her or tracked her down in the morning. Being on this ship was getting so complicated. She sighed, that was a lie she told herself, there was nothing complicated about it, she just didn’t know how to handle it.
Lt Synthi-er, CNS

Synthi-er

The name knocked the wind from her chest. It couldn’t be! That had been her Aunt’s name. And by extension, her Uncle’s and cousin’s names…Casela’s name.

Lala’s name.

It was too much. She couldn’t, not after this. Not in front of them. “Permission to go, please?” She turned her head to look at Cas, away from the others. The look was one of raw pain. Everything in her life suddenly crumbled. No, it crashed down around her like her city has fallen in the Dominion War. With a crash that rattled her to the core.

As she looked at Cas, asking to go, her mind tentatively reached out to the other woman. Please!? I..I need some time. I’m ok, I promise. Find me later. The words were sincere as were the feelings. Like you always did.

The final statement being all she could admit just now. She just hoped it was enough.
