Surda grinned. “Just my daily poisons.” She wasn’t even joking there. “Don’t worry about it, Rahuul knows I would never make him train with my people without good reason.” Surda straightened up in her chair and studied Juliet. “So, I’m your new chief. Yes, I am Orion, and yes, I mean that kind of Orion. I joined Starfleet 11 years ago. And yes, the rumors are true, I was once a Pirate in the Orion Syndicate.” Everything people wanted to know in 10 sentences or less. “Tell me a bit about yourself.” She liked to know at least two things about all of her officers.
OOC: Feel free to drop in on “Fostering Friendships.” All Security and RTF are invited, so you qualify twice!
-Surda, CoS

To her surprise, Juliet liked her new supervisor. A small grin untitled the edge of her lip as she chocked her head a moment in thought before answering. “I prefer whiskey as my poison. Yes I’m from that unit of Spec Ops. And yes I got busted though I, personally, never did any of the things we were accused of. And I have no problem with any Orions. Not even that kind.” Juliet smiled.

“Well, I appreciate that.” Surda smiled back. Most people didn’t care beyond the odd rude question every now and then.

“Other than that, there isn’t much to know, ma’am. I’ll work hard and prove that no matter what lane in my records, I’m a good security officer and won’t let you down.” The fleeting smile was gone and the guarded mind of the young woman was back in place.

Surda snorted. “Ok, number 1, records aren’t good for much. Number 2, I don’t expect you to work any harder than anyone else.” She stopped laughing, suddenly serious. “I know, better than most, what it’s like to have… dark things in your past, even things you aren’t directly responsible for.” She had read Juliet’s complete file, and some parts had been scarily reminiscent of her time with the Syndicate. “I know Starfleet says to go to a counselor if you want to talk, but if you ever feel like something a little less official, you’re part of my department now, and that means something here.” People found Orion values strange, believing that love and loyalty were replaced with duty and profit, but every Orion had a responsibility to anyone who worked under them. “This department is the closest thing to a family some of us get.” Juliet wouldn’t be the first person to take Surda up on the offer either. She meant it when she said her door was open for everything.
-Surda, CoS

When the Orion went serious, Juliet did as well. But her posture, just for the blink of an eye, relaxed a moment as if caught off guard, when the offer of coming to Surda instead of the Counselor, put before her. For just that instant, a momentary look of confusion passed behind her eyes.

“With all due respect, ma’am, just what IS up with this ship? The XO meets me upon arrival. You say this department is like family, a comment I’ve heard more than once in reference to this ship. And familiarity between the ranks seems to lend itself the impression that,” she paused for a moment then changed her mind and plunged on, “wel, that Fleet rules are pretty much out the air lock in regards to the running of the ship. Just how relaxed is this ship? I ask because, after what I’ve been thru, I honestly expected someplace run with far more regimen and definitely not family like in feeling.” Not that I’d know family if they punched me in the gut, she added silently to herself.

Surda paused for a moment, thinking of how the ship was run. “I won’t lie to you, we’re all here because we didn’t fit anywhere else.” She thought of what she had heard some people say about how they had ended up on the Leviathan. “Some people say that we’re people Starfleet wanted quietly out of the way. People expected to die on every mission. And that that’s why we run the ship however we want.” Surda shrugged. “I think that they put us all together because we are people with life experiences that don’t lend themselves to the usual ship, but make us far too valuable to let go. We don’t have to listen to red tape because the Admiralty knows we do best without it.” Surda smiled at Juliet, giving no indication that she had been thinking about her own past. “I was going to tell you you don’t have to call me ma’am, but I thought that might be a lot for your first day here.”

Juliet managed a small smile and nod. “Yeah, probably.”

Surda leaned forward, studying Juliet intently. She didn’t make an effort to hide her scrutiny, then seemed to suddenly make a decision. “I’ve been here all day. If you’re not too busy,” Surda knew she wasn’t of course. She assigned things personally. “Why don’t you take a walk with me?” Juliet had clearly expected an assignment akin to a prison sentence, and the Leviathan would take some getting used to. What better way than to shadow her DH?
-Surda, CoS

The scrutizing look was one Juliet was more than familiar with. Her posture changed ever so slightly. Most probably wouldn’t notice, and it didn’t occur to her that chances are, the DH would. She stood just a bit straighter, but there was a bit more defiance in the set of her jaw and the shadows behind her cystalline eyes. At the invitation to take a walk, she actually blinked as if double checking her mind that she heard right. “Ummm… sure.” She couldn’t think of anything else to say and turned slightly to wait for Surda to take the lead. She took that moment to ask what was on her mind. “If not ma’am… then what do you prefer? I’m guessing it’s not your rank.” She honestly wasn’t sure what to call the woman that didn’t seem overly familiar, and therefore, in her mind, wrong.

Surda considered it for a moment. “I get the feeling you wouldn’t be comfortable with just my name, although you can if you wish to.” She led the way through the security offices, walking slower than usual to allow Juliet to take in the sights. “Some call me Chief. If you’d like to be more cultural, it would be jmisc in Orion.” She pronounced the j as a y, the appropriate letter in Orion functioning as both when directly translated. “I like hearing my name, I like hearing my accomplishments, and I like hearing my language. It’s up to you.” Surda turned around suddenly, almost unnaturally fast. “I don’t mean that you have to stop either. If ma’am is what feels best to you, then you can use it. Words hold power, but at the end of the day, they’re just words.” She sighed, feeling more awkward than she had for a long time. She was good at interacting with people above her, not people she was responsible for. “I haven’t been the Chief for very long. If this was a normal ship, I’d never have made it past Ensign, no matter how good I was. If this was an Orion ship, I’d be lower than an Ensign. It’s a new experience all around.”
-Surda, CoS

Jewels rolled the choices around in her head. “Jmisc seems to suit you. Chances are it would be that or Ma’am. Not sure I could just use your name, yet. As you said, it’s a bit too soon for that.”

As the woman turned, Juliet had been mid-step but managed to freeze without moving as if they had choreographed it. The Orion was quick. Juliet wouldn’t forget that. At the mention of this not being a normal ship, Jewels gave a half snort laugh. “I’m getting that feeling. And I doubt you would be low on any totem pole, Jmisc. Sometimes making rank has more to do with who you are. And sometimes it’s more to do with what you can do. Either way, you are in the spot you are meant to be in. No matter the ship, no matter the circumstances. We all end up where we are meant to be.” She was mentally beating herself up at the same time as complimenting the Chief. It was odd, relinquishing herself to her station. It occurred to her that it was possibly the first time she had accepted her place as an Ensign once more.

Surda raised an eyebrow to that. “And sometimes your rank has more to do with silly internal politics than who you are or what you’ve done.” She left it at that and kept walking.

She fell back into step just to the left of the Chief, having noticed she was right handed. She knew not to block a weapon arm. And despite being on a ship they should be secure on, it was another ingrained habit she automatically did without thinking. She watched the places they passed as she memorized where they were heading. If the test was to see if she was paying attention, Juliet had no doubt she could find their way back to the offices without any issue. “By the way, you can call me Jewels if it’s easier than Anders or Ensign. It’s the call sign I got when I joined the teams.” She wouldn’t bore the woman with the details. Most folks didn’t care anyway.

Surda laughed. “Well, you can’t leave it at that! Call signs have stories, even if only the person it belongs to knows the meaning.” She suddenly took a sharp right down the hallway and several Ensigns who had been whispering together scattered out of the way. “Tell me yours, and I’ll tell you what my name means.” She had crafted her own name the day she had left Nuclo’s ship for the last time.
-Surda, CoS

She must be getting used to the Chief already. Jewels actually smiled as the Security DH laughed. “It’s pretty obvious. Coal for my hair and diamonds for my eyes. But a man I turned away from on my last Team said it was because I was cold and unobtainable. Just like buried coal and expensive diamonds.” The last sentence tapered off with a touch of emotion in it. But whether it was hatred for the man who spoke the words, or a realization it was probably true, even Juliet couldn’t have answered.

“Both coal and diamonds were highly coveted because they were difficult to obtain. Perhaps he should have tried properly.”

Quickly wanting to change the topic to something other than her frigid past, she nodded. “Now your turn.” A small smile still lifting the edges of her lips ever so slightly.

Surda smiled back and led the way into an open holodeck. “Surda is two parts. Sur is the Orion word for ghost, but it’s often used for someone who has vanished or is presumed dead. Da is a high Orion suffix which means old. Thus a sur-da would be someone who disappeared a long time ago.” She had been away from Nuclo for 12 years, and she never planned on going back.
-Surda, CoS

Juliet smiled. “Good thing I’m not Orion. My name probably would have meant left alone a long time ago,” she tried to laugh but it fell short.

“You know my real name’s Juliet. It’s in my files. But I want you to know something else about me. Something no one on this ship knows. Not even the Captain.” She paused, realizing what she to do. She wasn’t sure why, but Surda struck a chord deep in Jewels she didn’t even know existed…trust. It was a hard concept for Juliet so she allowed it to guide her.

“In Ops, I had to change who I was. My background, hobbies, hangouts, everything. Also my name. I kept Juliet because being the last of my family, I figured I needed to hold on to something. So I changed my last name.” She glanced sideways a moment back straight ahead. She’d never told a soul that her last name wasn’t real. It was made up. Made to aid in the new persona she’d created almost 5 years ago.
