Casela nodded, “Yes, your arrival is most welcome and could not come at a better time. But that does not answer my question. How did you end up with ARU? Did they recruit you specifically for this spot, or were you pulled in for different purposes?”

“I both studied and taught at the Deltan Institute of Mental Sciences, I believe I may have something to offer both in terms of my own abilities and with potentially improving the mental defences and resilience of others given time.”

Casela nodded, but talking with Anaya was an interesting experience. She’d never had an assistant under her. “Your educational requirements are quite impressive. Your experience as a teacher I’m sure will serve you well here. What unique skills do you bring to our team?”Casela was thankful for the extra staff and was eager to see where to put her to work. They had many gaps as she’d discussed with Ryder earlier in the week. Her gaze got far away for a moment and a trained therapist like Anaya would see the flash of guilt.

“The work here on Leviathan is very dangerous and taxing. The anomalies we are charged with caturing and containing can be benign or dangerous. Being the flag ship means we see very little of the benign type. Physical to telepathic attacks are everyday occurences here. Things of living nightmares for some. Down here in the bowels of the ship, it is quiet and we try to maintain that. The whole deck is ours. The main offices are off the lobby with four corridors extending out to the hull with a circulating corridor on the outside. We provide recreation rooms for games, music, meditation, art, and we have several empty rooms we can do more with. Another corridor is patient rooms for anyone needing to stay. All counselors here are also certified nurses or medics. If you don’t have one of those we will get you certified. Another corridor, has by default become a school wing. Also the first room down the port corridor has been converted to a miniature mess hall.” Casela paused there to see if she had comments, suggestions, or questions.

“I am qualified as a field medic and possess certain abilities that assist me in such a task, I would be happy to undergo further training in this area if you envision myself being used in a more.... ‘active’ role shall we say? Although, my main area of expertise or indeed my battlefield is here.” She said, tracing a delicate finger across her hairless brow.

“No that should be quite efficient for our needs. Those skills are most often used in order to monitor patients and administer medications ordered by Dr Knox or myself. And on occasion Dr McHarrie. And in emergencies we will help in sickbay. Many of that staff transfers to Dr McHarrie’s teams during emergencies and so we fill in for Dr Knox’s staff in primary sickbay. You are welcome to seek additional training if you wish.”

“Meditation space is indeed beneficial and I would like to see all of the facilities available of course. Perhaps, in time, some of the spare space could be set aside for.... allowing those so gifted to reach their full potential, yes?” Anaya’s tone had returned to its original purr, the same projection of both confidence and deference, only now with an extra layer of warmth and bon homie, the feeling of two old comrades in arms, sharing a drink and swapping stories.

“If you have suggestions for the empty space by all means let me know.”

“Perhaps, is there anything I can do to help you at this time Counsellor?”

“That will depend on your next answers, Lt. First what is your experience in exopsychology? And the second what is your security clearance?” The first would tell her who on their case load she could assign, the second was much the same but it would indicate if she would be able to take over any of Casela’s personal case load or if she would have to cancel all her appointments while she was on medical leave.

Anaya gazed out of the window at the starfield, her eyes seemingly resting on something far away.

“My last posting was aboard the Seeker as you know. She was a small deep space exploration vessel, barely big enough to rate having a Counsellor aboard at all if truth be told. We had a two year mission so I ensured I was well versed in both exopsychology and first contact protocols” she flashed the Lt a charming smile “you never know who or what you might find out there after all.”

“As for clearances, for my last posting I was both Ships Counsellor and required to qualify as a Bridge Officer, to enable me to command a watch if needed, given the small size of the crew, so I hold all the required clearances and qualifications. In addition, prior to taking this post I was briefed on the activities of the ARU and given Delta 1 level clearance to enable me to work with members of the crew that have been exposed to anomalies, and all the..... consequences..... of that exposure.”

As she said the last sentence, Anaya cast a professional eye over the woman before her, just how much had her experiences effected her? Sometimes professionals could be the very worst at identifying their own trauma, and, after all, who Counsels the Counsellor?
