Luran’s final stop for her first day aboard the Leviathan was to the Counseling Deck. It was a step she thought was unnecessary but it was mandatory so without a complaint, she marched down towards the CNS’s office. At least it gave her the chance to see more than the medical deck, where both her previous stops had been. Though, she did not think she’d be spending much time down here.

She headed up to the door and without hesitation, she rang the buzzer for the door.

The door to the CNS’s office remained closed. A crewman hurried over, a PaDD clasped in one hand and apologetic look on their face.

“I’m so sorry Ensign, the Counsellor is currently signed out of the office for a few days and we are still rejigging the appointments schedule” Said Deans.

“Lt Anaya is available and will see you now if I can escort you to her office?” The crewman waved her hand towards a door further down the corridor.

Crewman Deans - administrative assistant

Luran turned, listening to Deans. “Of course. Lead the way,” she said, following the crewman to the office further down.

“Here you are, the Lieutenant should be ready for you so go ahead when you are ready.” Said the crewman, checking something off on the PaDD.

“After your session, we have various relaxation and meditation spaces available, as well as a small mess hall if you require any refreshments. You have a good day now!” And with that, the crewman headed off, leaving the Ensign outside a fairly nondescript looking office door.

Crewman Deans - Admin Assistant and part time tour guide

“Thank you,” said Luran, interested in seeing the meditation rooms after the visit. She had been raised on Vulcan, after all, and quite enjoyed meditation. When Deans left, Luran opened the door and walked in.

The room that Luran entered bore little resemblance to the standard star fleet office layout. The lighting was soft and unobtrusive, emanating from several uplighters stationed around the room rather than the usual harsh overheads. Gentle music played in the background, a selection of piano instrumentals from old earth currently. Several paintings were hung around the room seemingly at random, mostly from the abstract school.

The rest of the furniture in the room was a mixture of different comfortable looking seating options, from armchairs, to well padded sofas, even a chase longue. All were arranged more in the manner of a tea parlour than an office space, the one concession being a small workstation placed in the corner of the room.

From this rose a a tall, slim figure, the graceful movements and natural beauty marking her as one of the Deltan race, even before noting the hairless scalp that only seemed to enhance magnetism of the smile with which she greeted her guest.

“Please, come in, take any seat you like. Would you care for tea? I have just brewed a pot but there is a replicator in the corner if you would prefer something else, yes?”

Anaya - Asst Counsellor

Luran had about four inches on the assistant counselor, and she looked Vulcan, with pointed ears and green-tinted skin. However, there were differences in her eyes and her hair. She had the black irises characteristic of her BEtazoid genetics, and her hair was a glossy dark brown rather than the black more common to Vulcans. “No thanks, but I appreciate the offer,” She said as she chose an armchair and sat down, her knees elevated slightly due to her height. “I am Ensign Luran Akunon, joining the Medical department. I’m just completing my boarding check-ins.”

“Ah, Just so, thank you for attending so promptly Luran, may I call you Luran?” The Counsellors words seemed to roll off her tongue in an almost liquid fashion, the tone warm and welcoming. Anaya made a note on her PaDD and then set it aside in order to pour tea from an antique looking silver tea pot into a delicate porcelain cup, complete with saucer and silver spoon.

“Luran is fine, thank you.” She replied. She was not one to be specific about what others chose to call her. Her first name was Vulcan in nature, given by her father. Her last name Betazoid in nature, handed down by her mother. She was fond of both.

“As you know, these meetings are all about getting to know each other, yes? So please, tell me something about you?” The question seemed both innocent and to invite confidence from the listener. Anaya took a sip of her tea, her eyes smiling at her guest over the rim of the cup.

Anaya - Asst Counsellor

The question seemed almost to confuse the ensign, and a puzzled look crossed her face for a moment. “To get to know each other. Of course.” She said, unsure of the reason for such a meeting. “I went to school on Vulcan. I specialize in emergency medicine.” She hoped that counted as ‘something about yourself’.

“And you’re 25 years old, with a brother 4 years younger than yourself, yes?”

“That’s right,” Luran said, indifferently. She hadn’t spent as much time with her brother as one might expect of siblings, though she knew he was currently in his final year at Starfleet Academy. If she remembered right, he was going into one of the life sciences, but she hadn’t seen him in a few years, so she wasn’t sure which one precisely.

Anaya reached out and delicately traced her finger along the edge of the PaDD she had set down. Her tone was still friendly, as warm and comfortable as the sofa on which she was reclining.

“I have read your file before meeting you Luran, it is part of my job, so please, tell me something about yourself that isn’t in here, yes?” She tapped her finger on edge of the PaDD.

Anaya - Asst Counsellor

Luran shifted in her seat, thinking carefully about how to answer that question. “Uhm…” She began. What was in those files, anyway? What did Anaya want to know that wouldn’t already be in there? “There was a lake on Betazed I visited once. Is that the sort of information you’re looking for?” She asked, leaning forward. The question was absolutely genuine, asked with honest curiosity.

~ Ensign Luran Akunon, Medical

“That depends, is there anything special about this lake?” After barely a moment Anaya spoke again, “Special to you that is?” She clarified, in a hurry to avoid a no doubt lengthy list of statistics about depth and salinity....

Anaya - Asst Counsellor

“Special about it? …No, it’s just water surrounded by grass. I was only there a few times.” Luran replied after a moment’s thought. She wouldn’t think to mention the answers Anaya was looking for, like that she was there with her mother and half-brother. Luran remembered little about it. She was unsure why that was the fact which came to mind.

“So, you went to a lake. And there was some grass.” Anaya paused to refill her cup from the silver pot. She held it over a second cup.

“You asked what was special about the lake,” said Luran, “I think it was special to my family. They were always very joyful there.”

“Are you sure you won’t take some tea Luran? Or some other refreshment?” In truth, Anaya was hugely intrigued by the Ensign. The combination of the stoic vulcan personality, layered over the deeply empathetic nature of a betazoid was unique as far as she could tell. How did the Ensign manage to both reject and suppress her own emotions, whilst at the same time being able to absorb and interpret the emotions of others? Astounding.

Absorb? Yes. Interpret? Sometimes. Luran had learned to control her reaction to other’s emotions rather than attempt to suppress them in the same way she suppressed her own. One could not control emotions which were not their own, after all, the same way one could not control another’s actions. “A tea, if you insist,” she replied, if only to keep Anaya from asking a third time. “Green, preferably.”

Cautiously, Anaya lowered some of her own mental safeguards, letting her own emotions have free rein, her happiness and joy at doing the job that she loved competed with her inquisitive and curious nature, the swirling tendrils of thought and emotions filling the room with just a fraction of the depth of her true feelings.

Anaya - Asst Counsellor

Without warning, Luran was struck by emotions which caught her off guard. Joy and happiness swirled out into the room, ballooning up within her unexpectedly. An inquisitive curiosity filled her alongside the first two, causing her to pause momentarily as she regained her composure. It took another moment for Luran to recognize that the sudden onslaught of emotion originated from Anaya. A fact surprising to her because just moments before she had felt nothing like this coming from the counselor.

“It will have to be from the replicator I’m afraid, I only have lapsang souchong brewed and it may not be to your taste.”

Anaya rose gracefully from the couch where she had been sitting and moved over to the replicator unit.

“Tea. Green. Hot.” She ordered, picking up the cup as it arrived. She placed the cup on a small side table next to Luran and resettled herself on the couch she had selected, sitting sidesaddle style with her knees tucked up on the sofa.

“So, your family experienced Joy at this lake? Did you feel this also or at second hand through their experiences?”

Anaya - Asst Counsellor
