The door swished closed as the chief intelligence officer left, the interview put him back on track with his timings and this next one was the last before lunch, his coffe remained on the side half full and cold, still he took a sip anyway as he waited for his next victim the chief medical officer, Lieutenant Commander Theodore Knox. Raauhl actually looked forward to this one because the medical staff catered for not just the star fleet personnel but everyone on board from the cold to dismemberment and a happy doctor is a happy patient.

  • Cmdr Raauhl, XO

The transition between one crewmember leaving and Theo presenting himself was almost seamless. Punctuality was of course very important to him, therefore at exactly his time slot he was at the open doorway and waited to acknowledged before he entered. Uniform impeccable and teal coloured labcoat billowing slightly behind him as he walked.

“Good morning Commander.” he said pleasantly as he approached, his hand was clasped around a large silver travel mug which he placed on the desk before Raauhl. “I took the liberty of assuming you would need a top up as it were by now. I do hope a later is to your liking.”

“You guessed right” Raauhl filled up his empty coffee mug with the fresh batch and sipped it, sighing somewhat. “It’s perfect you’ve passed the first test” he teased.

Theo smiled warmly.

He waited in a slightly relaxed attention stance, hands clasped behind his back to be invited to sit down.

Dr Knox

“Please take a seat and we can get this over and done with as little pain as possible.” Raauhl gestured to the chair opposite to him and waited for the Doc to sit. “So, Lets start with yourself giving me a brief outline of our department’s performance, I have some notes from your reports but I was to hear form the roses mouth so to speak.” He leaned back and allowed the Doctor to speak.

  • Cmdr Raauhl, XO

Sitting the doctor made himself comfortable in the chair. He considered his answer. “Having only recently taken over as chief medical officer there have been some mild teething issues as I indicated in my report but the staff are diligent and well organised. They have taken to the change over well and the most recent drills we have run have shown a 12% increase on performance time and treatment protocols.” he pulled a PaDD from his pocket and offered it a cross to Ryder.

Dr. Knox

Raauhl took the PaDD and gave it a glancing view, “This is some good work Doctor.” He placed the PaDD to the right of his own Pile. “So one of the efforts during this interview is to outline any negatives within the department and to set up some short, mid and long term goals.” He paused to allow the CMO to digest. “With medical as it is, and the ship and job we do I know you already are doing everything you can to facilitate our needs. That aside I have noticed an increase in the rate inwhichyour department sign of individuals for temporary sick absents, be it through the anomalies we encounter or other reasons. How do you suppose we tackle this?” He held up his hands, “Im not saying everyone signed of is over-exaggerating their injuries or illness but…” He looked through his notes, “A Petty Officer Nielson was signed off work for one week due to a foreign infection of the ear yet he was also then witnessed practising his cello at 0800hrs. The nurse who signed off on Mr Nielson is also suggested to be in a romantic relationship with him. I don’t tend to go by hearsay and relationships are not illegal but doing ‘favours’ is certainly frowned upon.”

  • Cmdr Raauhl, XO

Theo’s lips pulled into a slight smile. “As I recall sir. And you will note in my log entry.” he produced another PaDD and offered it’s across. “That Petty officer Nielson had complained of an infection which was treated as normal, no further treatment necessary, however it became recurrent. He was treated each time as you stated by Nurse Noslein. On further investigation of this case I have concluded that the patients symptoms are actually part of an undetected wider underlying issue.”

Taking the PaDD he quickly skimmed the outline, he knew the doctor would explain further. He was happy that someone came prepared for his questions, the fact that his question was random really spoke volume for the professionalism fo the chief medical officer.

He paused a moment “I did of course consider an anomaly at play however it appears that it is illness which caused a form of parasomnia.” the corners of his mouth turned up again ever so slightly. “It actually transpires Commander that Petty Officer Nielson is both himself and the nurse who signed off.. on his absence as you so astutely put it.”

The doctor tutted mildly. “I have input a process where all absence must be signed off by a senior medical staff member and We are in the process of treating the conditios. I am happy to say that Mister Nielson will make a full recovery. The same, It is unfortunate to say, cannot be said for his other persona.”

Dr Knox

“Well it seems that you’re well and truly ahead of the weather here so I won’t dwell much on it.” He placed the additional PaDD ontop of the other’s he had acquired. “So let’s move onto what your short, mid and long term departmental goals will be. These can include anything and are entirely at your own disposal, though I may interject from time to time. I do however have a suggestion towards encouraging crew to undergo their quarterly medical check-ups. I know usual Starfleet ships are annual however with the nature of our job…” He didn’t need to finish his sentence.

  • Cmdr Raauhl, XO

Theo smiled. “I would be delighted to hear your suggestions of course commander. I do have some suggestions myself. For example I think modelling the behaviour and having yourself and the captain report openly for your examinations would go along way to ensure that the rest of the crew follow the example. Don’t you agree?”

Dr Knox

Raauhl shifted uncomfortably in his chair, he’d been putting off his own medical because.. well things happened and he was a busy man. Smiling, “Well that’s certainly something I can do better at but I dare not speak to the Captain, he… well he’s unique in a good way of course.” Raauhl felt as if he was on trial during most if not all these interviews. “So.. Get the XO and CO to have their medicals That’s a good enough short term goal, but it’s your department, you’re there subject matter expert here and besides chasing up senior command staff what other things would you like see improved, this si your time.”

  • Cmdr Raauhl, XO

“Excellent.” Theo said with a smile. “I have some time and openings later this evening I shall schedule you both in for when your shifts end.” he fiddled with a PaDD and sure enough within seconds an appointment reminder would ping on both Raauhl’s and the Captain’s PaDDs or computers.”

“Im glad we could get that sorted out, so back to matter at hand and your department?” Ryder now wanted to get back on track and take his mind away from his medical examination, it wasn’t that he didn’t like them infact the opposite there was no better feeling than being told you were fit and healthy but it was time he could have spent else where like in the CIC controlling the crew.

He then considered. “ It would be prudent to give the entire medical staff trained in the treatment and basic protocols of any anomaly incidents. I am aware their uscacseoreate staff for this but being able to have everyone on the same foundation would seem like a good idea.”

Dr Knox

He nodded jotting the idea down on his PaDD for medical, “That sounds like a reasonable request. Of course, we dont really know what anomalies were going to come up with but I dont see why not having everyone on the same page would hurt. I’ll submit this as a priority. How would you conduct your training? Live drills, lessons, seminars?” He asked curiously, maybe hed join one or two.

  • Cmdr Raauhl, XO

Theo nodded along. “A mix of all three I believe would be the most robust way of conducting any such training. I would be very great full for your insight in that and in the program for implementation.” He said.

Dr Knox

Raauhl nodded, “From experience I have found that the lower rankes Enlisted maybe even up to Lt.JG respond better to practical lessons as do most of Starfleet so I would certainly consider putting most of the effort towards running Drills that being said an open forum between the department heads and command staff in regards to medical procedures and triage techniques could down the line save lives. We could even nominate a few from each department to become team medics on away teams incase a medical officer isn’t available or incapacitated. Thats where i’d put my eggs so to speak.” Raauhl was completely invested in giving the crew a fighting chance which sometimes meant blurring the line between departments.

  • Cmdr Raauhl, XO

Theo nodded and made some notes on his PaDD. “That sounds like a good way forward. I can draft a proposal for you and send it to you if you’d like.” He said casually and then smiled at the XO.

Dr Knox

“That sounds like a great idea, it is, however, your department so no need to await my approval I will just like updates so I can keep the Captain informed as well.” He paused to take a sip of his drink and to look at what was next on his agenda. “Besides the personnel how are the facilities and stocks holding up, we’ve been pretty busy and I know your department has been particularly used.”

  • Cmdr Raauhl, XO

“As you say commander.” Theo said and watched the man drink. “We have some restocking needs that will become more than necessary in the next six to eight weeks if possible. Other than that we seem to be holding up fine. “
