When 'Official' Really Does Matter

Casela sat in her office. It was quiet and she wouldn’t be interrupted here. She waited for the connection to be made. On the screen an image of an older Vulcan woman appeared, but the traditionally sharp features of a Vulcan were tempered by human features. She had red hair that was starting to grey at the temples and vivid green eyes. “Casela.” Just her name, and she waited.

“Admiral,” she began.

“Whoa! Hold up Girly. Since when do you call me Admiral? None of that. What’s going on?”

Casela grinned slightly. Only T’Jal (and if she was honest, Jake and F’actar too) could call her Girly and make her feel like she was. “I need a favor, a very personal one.” T’Jal raised a single brow and in the back ground a gruff female voice, “Favor? Did she earn a favor?” And a male laugh and then a older man, blue eyes, grey hair once sandy brown appeared shaking his head. “Okay a favor? That’s my department. These two old gals are too ornery to even listen.” And that preceded an off screen argument between Jake and the still yet unseen F’actar. Jake waved by as he disappeared from the screen. Once T’Jal was sure Jake and F’actar wouldn’t interrupt…again she turned back to the screen. “Alright Girly, what’s got you all twisted up? I can see it all over your face.”

“My service record…it’s not…accurate.”

“Indeed not. We couldn’t place you where we needed you if it was accurate. You know that, you’ve always been fine with that. Surely it’s not a promotion your after?”

“No, rank and promotions don’t suite me. They would hamper my ability to move freely.” Casela laughed at that. She’d probably be up for ‘Commander’ by now if her file reflected the work she did, or she’d be in prison…maybe, probably not. That was just her being flippant, again.

“Then what is it?”

Casela fixed her gaze on the woman who had been her mentor all these years. Taught her everything her father had not. Helped her heal, shown her purpose, and shielded her from the section when it was necessary. She could even get Casela out if need be, but that would require a lot of favors called in, and she owed T’Jal too much to ask that of her. “I…I’m…There’s this little girl on board. We found her, and…I want to adopt her.”

The conversation wore on for over an hour. There was no topic they did not cover, no questions not answered. “So you found your family.” Casela nodded. “I told you, Girly. So you need me to make your record look a little more acceptable?”

“As it stands I don’t exactly look like a stable candidate do I?” T’Jal shook her head, “No, but this is just paper. Anyone who knows about Delotha, well they’d have no doubt. Let’s see....this would need to go to…Judge Kentaira Arroz, Family Court Judge, Federation Courts Sector 293?”

“As far as I can tell. It’s a delicate issue. I need my record in place, but…if Section gets ahold of the fact I’m altering it could cause problems.”

T’Jal swore in Klingon making Casela grin. “They are not boogie men. Most operatives have families, Casela. And the section goes to great lengths to keep them safe for the operatives when they are gone.”

“I know that, but officially changing my file can put others at risk and that would draw their attention. I worked alone most of the time, but I don’t want anyone I did work with put at risk. Plus we still don’t know who the mole is.”

“Well I suggest you get onto your side of the paperwork then; you’ve helped enough potential parents through the process, you should manage this in your sleep. When the Judge requests your file I’ll make sure she gets the right one. She’s an old acquaintance, I shall be discreet and so will she.” T’Jal looked away from the screen and back, “I apologize now.” She moved away and Jake sat down. “Alright, when are you coming to visit? I want to meet him, whoever it is. I’m the closest thing to a father you’ve got at the moment and it’s me or Ch’otok. Take your pick.” She started to answer, “Nope, Casela, I mean it. Don’t you dare deprive me of this. You know this is a beautiful place for shore leave, and you’ll have a whole little family too. It’s idyllic and perfect places for such a formal…”

She took a very deep breath. She knew what was coming. “Good bye Jake,” and she ended the comm link. There was no way she was getting into a conversation about that with him. Ch’otok would be bad enough if…okay when he found out. She left her office at the end of her shift, carrying three PaDDs. For her and Ryder there was 15 pages of questions plus forms and appointments. For Gen it wasn’t quite so much, just a few pages, and she’d have to meet with the Judge, without them. She might be able to get Kindle or Cobb to sit with her. She entered their quarters and set all three PaDDs on the desk and looked at Ryder. “I hope you are prepared for the insane amount of paperwork this is going to take.”

Raauhl glanced at the PaDDs and then to Casela, “Well I’m sure it would take less paperwork if you didn’t work for such a shady organisation but who am I to judge right> I work for the ARU” Next to him were another three PaDDS, “Maybe we should try and refine these to just a few PaDDs I dont want to get lost in the bureaucratic side of adopting someone, I’ve also got a few ideas on which judge to advocate for us unless you have a Section family lawyer who can get all this passed in a jiffy?” He was teasing, though he did hate everything about Section 31.
