Irida nodded, “I will be Luran. Just my pride.” Her finger looked like she had severe rug burn from the fletching. She rubbed the thumb of her other hand over it a few times. She selected another arrow, knocked, drew, and released. This time the arrow flew from the bow, landing on the outer edge of the target circle.

“That was much better. You learn quickly,” Luran said. Notching her own arrow, and pulling back, Luran looked down the length of the arrow and then released, allowing her arm and fingers to follow through the movement. The arrow hit the inner edge of the innermost ring. “I don’t usually get bullseye’s but I am quite close.” She commented.

“Ah but as the Lt keeps telling me, practice and honest assessment of performance makes improvements.” Irida selected another arrow and continued to practice. Unlike phasers arrows needed to be adjusted for distance and fall and it took her several tries to get it right. She didn’t hit the center of the target but she hit the target and made small improvements as the session continued.

Luran nodded. A sentiment she could certainly agree with. “Oh, yes, absolutely.” As Irida began shooting at the target, Luran began her own practice, aiming for a perfect bullseye. “When you feel ready for more challenge, we can make them moving targets or change the wind,” Luran said. Changing the settings to “windy day” could make even the still targets a whole new level of hard.

Irida looked at Luran a bit cautious and intrigued. “I do love a challenge but I think I should get a firm grip on the basics first.” She understood the idea of the physics behind changing the ‘wind’ but it was a factor that Irida had never had to deal with. Now Trainor, the Black Devils sharp shooter, probably had. She wondered if he had any experience with archery. The man seemed to be a master at any weapon that could be used from a distance.

Shaking her wayward thoughts off, Irida focused on the target and form of shooting the arrows.

“A reasonable position,” said Luran. She had expected Irida to want more practice, but she felt knowing about the other things Luran had put into the program could be helpful later. “Have you ever wanted to learn about other ancient weapons?” She asked.

Irida was half way to draw and breathed maintaining her posture, sighted, and loosed the arrow. It flew true and hit the target near center. Irida lowered the bow and turned to Luran and grinned. “You speak my language Luran. Show me.”

If Luran weren’t as set on the Vulcan path, she may have grinned. Instead, she nodded, and made the computer summon a weapon she was less familiar with: a medieval sword. Two of them, with a shield, too. “I look forward to having a practice partner,” she said, on the assumption that Irida was interested enough to want to do more. “Another well-known weapon, the basic sword. I’m not as skilled with this as I am the bow. It’s a surprisingly complex weapon for its simple design” she said.
