Irida nodded, “I will be Luran. Just my pride.” Her finger looked like she had severe rug burn from the fletching. She rubbed the thumb of her other hand over it a few times. She selected another arrow, knocked, drew, and released. This time the arrow flew from the bow, landing on the outer edge of the target circle.

“That was much better. You learn quickly,” Luran said. Notching her own arrow, and pulling back, Luran looked down the length of the arrow and then released, allowing her arm and fingers to follow through the movement. The arrow hit the inner edge of the innermost ring. “I don’t usually get bullseye’s but I am quite close.” She commented.

“Ah but as the Lt keeps telling me, practice and honest assessment of performance makes improvements.” Irida selected another arrow and continued to practice. Unlike phasers arrows needed to be adjusted for distance and fall and it took her several tries to get it right. She didn’t hit the center of the target but she hit the target and made small improvements as the session continued.

Luran nodded. A sentiment she could certainly agree with. “Oh, yes, absolutely.” As Irida began shooting at the target, Luran began her own practice, aiming for a perfect bullseye. “When you feel ready for more challenge, we can make them moving targets or change the wind,” Luran said. Changing the settings to “windy day” could make even the still targets a whole new level of hard.

Irida looked at Luran a bit cautious and intrigued. “I do love a challenge but I think I should get a firm grip on the basics first.” She understood the idea of the physics behind changing the ‘wind’ but it was a factor that Irida had never had to deal with. Now Trainor, the Black Devils sharp shooter, probably had. She wondered if he had any experience with archery. The man seemed to be a master at any weapon that could be used from a distance.

Shaking her wayward thoughts off, Irida focused on the target and form of shooting the arrows.

“A reasonable position,” said Luran. She had expected Irida to want more practice, but she felt knowing about the other things Luran had put into the program could be helpful later. “Have you ever wanted to learn about other ancient weapons?” She asked.

Irida was half way to draw and breathed maintaining her posture, sighted, and loosed the arrow. It flew true and hit the target near center. Irida lowered the bow and turned to Luran and grinned. “You speak my language Luran. Show me.”

If Luran weren’t as set on the Vulcan path, she may have grinned. Instead, she nodded, and made the computer summon a weapon she was less familiar with: a medieval sword. Two of them, with a shield, too. “I look forward to having a practice partner,” she said, on the assumption that Irida was interested enough to want to do more. “Another well-known weapon, the basic sword. I’m not as skilled with this as I am the bow. It’s a surprisingly complex weapon for its simple design” she said.

~ Ensign Luran Akunon, Medical

Irida took the sword and the shield and tested them experimentally. Irida was in decent shape but the sword was on the heavy side for her. “I think something short for me. It’s a bit too heavy for me to wield one-handed. I can already feel the strain in my wrist and lower arm.” With a slight change she swung it, safely away from Luran, testing out the weight and balance. “Much better.” She turned back to Luran. “I am eager to learn.”
MCPO Irida

“Swinging a sword is easy, and one could certainly do damage swinging at an untrained opponent, but against anyone with any sort of skill, you’ll need a little more practice. It starts in arm strength and footwork,” Luran explained, taking her own sword and shield off the table. The program had a training dummy set into it, and with a quick word, Luran summoned it. It was a person of average build, faceless. She turned and made an example strike at the dummy, which the dummy easily blocked with its shield. “A weak blow won’t cut it, but you can make a weak blow a strong one with the right footwork and skill.”

Irida nodded this was something Lt Synthi-er had taught them and impressed upon them over and over. “So first I need to learn the steps?” Irida mimiked Luran’s stance and began to copy the way she moved.
MCPO Irida

Luran nodded. “Exactly. I can lend you some reading material on the matter, if you like. Your stance looks fairly good, but keep your knees bent and fluid or you won’t be able to move quickly enough,” she said, looking at Irida and judging her mimicked stance.

“I would very much like to read whatever you have on the topic.” Irida adjusted her stance a little and copied the foot work in repetition a few times. It was not awkward but she would have to remind herself not to change her stance to what she’d learned in RTF training. Different weapon different movements. She’d remember.
MCPO Irida

“I’ll send it to you, then.” Luran said. Most if not all her reading material was digital. That way, it took up less space. “When you swing it, it’ll require some upper body and arm strength, but if you’ve got your stance right, your weight will put a lot more power into your blows.” She explained.

Irida nodded practicing the swing slowly getting a feel for how her stance and foot work changed the power and accuracy of the swing. “I look forward to reading it.” Irida knew from her RTF tactical training that Luran was right, but this was a weapon she’d never used before. In fact it had been outdated a long time ago on Earth.
