Vonn sent the training notification to Luna and then made their way to the holodeck. In one hand they carried a small black case with a handle.

The doors opened and the voice from the helmet said =/\= Computer, run program Vonn Marksman Training 1-point-zero. =/\= and the computer chirped and scene appeared.

It was a pleasant field surrounded by woods. In the middle was a low stone wall about ten yards from where Vonn stood. On the top of the wall sat a row of rusted steel cans, about a dozen of them. By Vonn’s foot was a large bucket filled with rocks of assorted sizes and shapes. Birds chirped in the trees, and every now and then a grasshopper would jump and fly across the view. The Breen stood and waited in silence.

Vonn, RTF CO

About ten minutes later Luna entered the holodeck. ” Hello in sorry I have to find some one to take Serenity unfortunately she managed to get past the computer lock and deactivated the holographic babysitter” Luna said shaking her head. ” I thought being a parent was sapose to be fun” she joked then focused in on Vonn. ” How are you today should we get started” she asked as she looked at the Saranding area noticing the bucket of rocks wall and cans sitting on it.
Ensign Luna

Vonn didn’t turn or make any move to acknowledge Luna. They stood motionless as Luna talked; and when she finished the Breen simply bent over, took a rock from the bucket, drew their arm back and let the rock fly at one of the cans. There was a loud CLANK as the rock struck the can and knocked it off the wall. The helmet then turned to Luna.

“Knock down all the cans.” and they gestured to the bucket of rocks.

Vonn, RTF CO

” ok” Luna said with I’m about three minutes she had knocked down all the cans she needed a few tries on the first one to get the hand of things otherwise she would have done it much faster. ” why are we throwing rocks” she asked confused.
Ensign Luna

As the last can fell, they suddenly reappeared. The helmet swiveled to face Luna. “Now with your other arm.” and the bucket refilled with rocks.

Vonn

” umm… ok” she said a little confused this time it took her around 4 minutes to knock the cans down she needed a few extra tyrs with her other arm. She looked up at Vonn wondering what throwing rocks had to do with shooting a phaser.
Ensign Luna

Vonn didn’t move or teact to the throws. If they were pleased or not was not knowable. Once again, the cans reappeared. Vonn said “Again. Alternate between arms each throw. Repeat the three cycles until you can do all three with only one missed throw. When you can do that three times in a row - one arm, the other, then alternating… missing only one throw - we will move on to the next phase of your training. Do you understand?”

Vonn, RTF CO

Luna looked at him for a moment she was half tempted to storm out of their let him kick her off the team. This was ridiculous. But she was two stubborn for that. So she did his crazy training it took her two maby three run through before doing the exercise correctly. Flying need some pretty good coronation so the task was not exactly hard.
Ensign Luna

When she finished the drill with only a single miss, the cans did not reappear. Vonn bent over and picked up the bucket and turned and walked twenty feet further away from the wall. They did not look at Luna, nor did they speak.

Setting the bucket down thirty feet away from the wall activated the program and two dozen glass bottles appeared on the wall. But because of the rough nature of the stone, the bottles did not all stand up straight. Some leaned forward, some to the side, some even leaned against another. The helmet swiveled and looked at Luna.

“Same drill. One arm, then the other, then alternate. Three times through, one miss only. You may only knock down one bottle at a time. If more than one falls, you start over. If the glass breaking knocks more than one over, you start over. You have three minutes to complete the entire drill successfully. If time runs out, you start over. Begin.”

Vonn, RTF CO

” would you mind designing ” Luna asked crossing her arms” what he was asking was impossible. Or at lest she thought it was. She was not about to wast time in an impossible task.
Ensign Luna

Vonn didn’t move for several long moments, the helmet remaind fixed on Luna. Finally the Breen bent over and picked up a handful of the smaller rocks from the bucket and turned to the wall. Remaining motionless again, it seemed as if the armored figure had once again become a statue.

Then there was a flurry of movement. Vonn’s arm whipped back and then forward and a bottle shattered. Then another. Then another. Down the line, one by one, the bottles shattered. When they reached the one supporting the leaning one, the hand grasped a larger rock and lt it fly, shattering both at the same time. In under a minute all the glasses lay in pieces, only to dissapear and reappear. Vonn stopped throwing and the helmet faced her.

“Begin.”

Vonn, RTF CO

Ok so it was not impossible. It would take Luna over an hour to get it right. She kept failing for one reason or another. The braking glass would shatwr other glasses or she knocked one of the bottles over. When she finly completed the exercise she looked at Vonn. ” Sir I have a question” Luna said.
Ensign Luna

While she tried, and failed, Vonn didn’t move. The Breen stood motionless as she threw rock after rock after rock.

When she finally completed the exercise and spoke, Vonn replied “Ask your question, Ensign.” and the helmet swiveled to face her.

Vonn, RTF CO

” what dose throwing rocks have to do with firing a phaser” she asked.
Ensign Luna

No response came from the Breen for some time. “What makes you think you will be firing a phaser, Ensign?” was the eventual reply.

Vonn

Luna” is that not star feets standered weapon” Luna said now she was confused.
Ensign Luna

“Is the RTF standard Star Fleet?” the voice asked.

Vonn

” good point but what dose this have to do with hitting a weapon? ” Luna said.
Ensign Luna

Vonn bent at the waist so they were eye to visor with Luna. “Very little. But there is more to being a competent long range specialist than just shooting. You, Ensign, are impatient… easily distracted… and you bore easily. None of these traits are qualities even a mediocre sniper has. So before you learn the art of long distance marksmanship, you have to show me you can do the basics. Repetative. Boring. Monotonous basics. Once I am convinced you can do that?” and Vonn stood up straight and walked down to the wall. They moved behind the wall and picked a very large rifle… almost as long as Vonn was tall. They walked back to Luna and set the butt of the rifle on the ground. “Once I am convinced you can do those things then you will learn how to do this.”

Vonn didn’t move, but the voice said =/\= Computer. Activate Vonn targets at five hundred meters.=/\= The computer chirped and the clearing in the trees immediately stretched away from them. Far away could be seen a mound. Vonn pulled a device form their belt and held it out to Luna. “Look through it. The far end of the field.”

At the Far end was target with the silhouette or a humanoid on it. As Luna watched through the spotter scope, Vonn raised the rifle to their shoulder. There was a pause for three or four heartbeats and the a massive CRACK as the rifle fired a single shot. The target disappeared in a puff of smoke.

Vonn set the rifle back down and then looked at Luna. “There is more to sniping than shooting. Anyone can shoot with the right training, Ensign. But not everyone can lie motionless for days on end peering through a viewer for the perfect shot. That is what you must learn… patience.”

Vonn

Luna startled at the sound nearly dropping the scope. The ringing in her ears drowned out Vonn’s last sentence but she had an idea of what his message was. ” ouch, bird ears” Luna said more to herself then to Vonn. She shook her head and focused back on Vonn. ” I don’t even think I can lift that thing. It’s ironic you know I think iv said the same thing to Cerenity over a hundred times.” Luna add shaking her head.

The trades Vonn were naming were the trades one needed do some of the more fancy flying Luna was so good at. ” when diving or doing a barrel roll one needs to be patient and precise because one second can be the difference between life and death. A crass landing can easily be fatal.” Luna said once again talking more to herself the Vonn. She setped back away from him and stretched her wings and arms.

She then focused back on Vonn as she closed her wings and said. ” Ok what’s next” Luna asked.
Ensign Luna

The computer reset to the wall and rocks and bottles. Vonn’s visor looked at her and the voice said “Now you keep throwing.”

Vonn, RTF CO

Luna shook her head picked up the rocks and throw then at the wall again. Part of her wish she were throwing snowballs at Jeane and Cerenity. But she stay focused on the task.
Ensign Luna

Days.

Luna spent days throwing rocks at bottles. As she grew comfortable and practiced, the distance increased. As she became more accurate, the targets became more difficult, up to and including moving targets hanging from tree limbs. Or targets behind metal plates that moved in unpredictable and random ways to expose her target for a moment before it was covered up again. And all the while, the wordless and motionless Breen simply stood and watched, a statue of silent criticism.

Two weeks had passed since their first day. When Luna came in this day, however, things had changed. Vonn was there in the room of black with a yellow grid. Facing the door, he held out a hand holding a mass of net-like material. As Luna entered, the room shifted to a woodland. They were surrounded by tress and grass and rocks and everything one would expect in a deep wood.

Luna’s eyes went wide at the sight of the what she thought was a net. She dropped to a low conative stance. ” Drop that net” she growled. And she reached for her phaser witch she did not have.

“Camoflauge. A Sniper’s most important tool. Without camouflage, you will not be able to remain hidden. Without being hidden, you will be unable to reach your targets. Without your targets, you have no purpose. Take this. Find natural materials from the environment. Attach them to the mesh. It should cover you from head to toe, allow you to blend seamlessly into your environment, and cover your weapon as well. You should be invisible to anyone looking for you… even if they are standing on top of you. This is your ghillie suit. Begin”

Vonn, RTF CO

” I’m not a child anymore what evey they told you I’m no du.b enough to fall down those tricks.” Luna snaped befor opening her wings shall flapped them once or twice and got up above the tree line landing silently on one of the Denser covered trees. Luna had issues with nets they had been used on her befor by section 31 to get control of her quickly befor they took her to one of the labs.

They had stoped using the nets on her after she had turned 10 and could easily escape them. She watched the Breen silently with out moving from her spot in the tree. She was not going to come down or be reasonable until he dropped the net and stepped away from it.
Ensign Luna

Vonn watched her fly away and settle in the tree. They waited, not moving, for several minutes before simply dropping the net-like fabric and walking out of the door.

“Training is terminated as of now. Good day, Ensign.” the voice said and the door slid closed.

Vonn, RTF CO

Luna dropped down from the tree to looked at the net. Realizing it was not a net she stayed there for a long moment. Trying to figer out what to do with the thing. She grinned her turn to scare him. That was a nasty trick he had played. She left the Net where it was and moved further into the holodeck rolling in some mud and leaves the hide in a large bush. Hood thing this was the holodeck or it would take her weeks to get this out of her fethers. The she sat and waghted for him to return.
Ensign Luna

An hour later, Vonn was in their office when the computer sent a notification that their sim was still active on the holodeck. =/\= Computer, end program. =/\= they said and went back to personnel record review.

On the holodeck, the woods vanished and the room was empty once more.

Vonn, RTF CO

Luna blinked shook her head and headed to Vonn’s office. She rang the chime she was not at all willing to give up but that was a nasty trick he had played on her. She took a deep breath and rang the chime.
Ensign Luna

The door slid open and the RTF Commander was sitting at the desk. “Ensign.” was all the voice said.

Vonn, RTF CO

” Hello I’m not giving up sir. You can teach me or I will learn this on my own. Also why on earth did you feel the need to scare me with that net thing.” She asked. It was very clear she was confused.
Ensign Luna.

Vonn’s visor tilted slightly to the side. “I was not trying to scare you, Ensign. That is a standard tool for all snipers. But as you obviously cannot be bothered to see past your own phobias and have yet again refused to follow direction, I have no further time to waste training you. Feel free to teach yourself. I hope you learn some very valuable lessons in patience, self-control, and mental fortitude. But you will not be utilizing those skills, if in fact you can learn them, with the RTF.” and the door slid open.

“Dismissed, Ensign.”

Vonn, RTF CO

” how did you know that I did not tell you that. And I can get past them if you give me the chance to sir. I thought you were trying to…’ she started then fell silent she wrapped her arms around herself and dug her nails into her forearms. ” Sir I was torchered in a lab and nets were one of the tools they used to move me from the cell to the lab. You would lean to be afraid of nets to if they were used to pin you down so Scientist poke and prod you cut you open while you were still awake inject strange things onto your body it hurt. Iv never had to deal with a net again. Please let me try again” She said.

Luna shook her head resining she had failed. ” I understand sir I failed I will never trouble you again” she said then turned and left. It was a good thing she did not have any RTF equipment . She wandered what would happen now. Would she be transferred of the ship or kicked our of star fleet.
Ensign Luna

The doors didn’t open when she approached them.

“Ensign… there are two other lessons that you have to learn before you learn anything else.... not just training, but also how to be a better officer.” Vonn stood up and stepped around the desk.

“You need to learn to let go of the past, and you need to learn to trust those around you. Those two lessons will serve uiu better than any amount of martial training. Fears based on past events only serve to cloud the future. Deal with your demons, Ensign. Stop letting your past define your present. Do that, and then you will be able to train without distraction. Then you will be ready to take your place.”

” I thought you were kicking me out of RTF” she said confused.

Vonn moved to the windo and the visor looked at the Vista outside the ship. “We can never forget the past, Ensign. But we can decide what hold it has on us. That is a choice you must make for yourself. So make that choice the best one you can.” And the helmet swiveled to look at her and the door opened.

” I don’t want my past to define me, it seemed to sneek up on me when I least expect it. You know sence I escaped them iv never see a another Net until today. I want to trust you but trust is hard though I think that’s a two way street can you honestly say you trust me at all?” She asked. She would not at all be surprised if he said no. She did not even have the slitist idea of how to even start working on the two things he had asked her to work on. ” where would you suggest I start in all honesty iv been trying to get past my issues for years will mixed results” she said. She was defiant not willing to see Celeste. That was the last thing that the consuler needed to worry about.

“Right now, I trust you to make poor decisions based on untempered instinct; instincts that fail to take others… your team… into account. I trust you to be reactionary and hot-headed. And I also trust you take this critique as just that… a critique on actions- not an attack on you personally. And at this point I trust you to make a wise choice with regards to how you move forward or not.”

” wise choice iv never been very wise so that’s a stretch” Luna admitted not totally Suprize by what he said.

“Dismissed, Ensign. I look forward to seeing what choice you make.”

Vonn, RTF Commander

” can we try the training exercise again tomorrow sir” she asked.
Ensign Luna

Vonn moved back to desk and sat down. “Continue the first part of the training. Daily. Throw rocks. Use the time as a period of self-reflection. A kind of… meditation. When you can hit all your targets without thinking about the act of throwing… when you can separate your conscious thoughts from the action of hitting your targets… then we will continue. But it will not be soon, it will take time. And it will come as a surprise when you realize you have done it. Because at that point you will allow your senses to guide your hand without the need for conscious thought. The mind is a powerful tool, Ensign. I suggest you stop smothering that tool in memories of past pains. Now… dismissed.”

Vonn looked away from her and down to the desk. Out of her sight, they added an alert to tell them when the holodeck program was activated. If she did as instructed… without guidance, without mandates… then she would have made great steps towards becoming what Vonn knew she could be.

If she let herself drop the chains if the past.

Vonn, RTF CO

Luna nodded and left his office. The next day she returned to the holodeck and ran the training exercise. She would return to the holodeck every. Day doe well over two months and do as she was told. Dhe struggled to focus on the task. And when she found her mind drifting it was usually to the past or Cerenity’s future. A few days she had managed to do what Vonn had asked hit all the targets with out thinking about it. Her mimd blank for then most part.. Though she was not shure if now would be the time to bother Vonn about it. So she would continue the exercise until he decided to ask her about it.
Ensign Luna

One day, randomly, as she walked into the holodeck, the program started but there was one difference…

On the wall was the mesh he had tried to give her before. the computer chirped and Vonn’s voice came through the simulation. “Ghillie suit. Make it. Use the local plant life to create the illusion of nature. Camouflage yourself in it. The key is to break up lines and silhouettes. Make your body seem like the world you are surrounded by… part of the natural order. I will be through sometime today to find you. It could be ten minutes… it could be ten hours. Patience, Ensign. The cornerstone of all sniper operations.”

Vonn, RTF CO

“Sir how do I keep my wings from getting caught I’m it. Then net of the thing could damage my flight feathers” she said. She was still unsure of the net like material but at least she had not run away. ” I better see if Gill can come up with sumthing after this lesson” she said to herself as she pulled the site from the wall as stated to work.
Ensign Luna

There was no response, and on further thought, the voice may have been a recording.

Vonn

With out much more thought Luna flapped her wings getting up into the trees where the leaves did branches were the dentist. She cover the site with a combination of bark branches and leaves. ” let him find me now” she thought. Setleing quietly in her spot and stayed still.
Ensign Luna

A few hours later, a door appeared in the forest and the familiar figure of the RTC COmmander strode through. The figure stopped in the middle of the clearing and the helmet pivoted slowly. And then the right arm raised and pointed at Luna.

“The ghillie suit is meant to be worn, adorned with things that blend in the natural setting. Bark on a tree is only found on the trunk and branches… not in the leaves. And you silhouette stands out like a beacon. Come here.” and they gestured to the ground in front of them.

” I am no a dog” Luna said taking to thing off wail still on the trees befor landing infront of him olding the strange thing out.

Once she had joined them, Vonn took the suit and said “Go get lunch. When you come back, I will have your suit ready so you can see what it should look like. Then I will show you how to wear it.”

Vonn, RTF CO

Luna blinked Suprize ” Ok Thank you” She said clear confusion in her voice. She left the holodeck and returned some 20 minutes later.

” Hi I’m back” she said happly. She still had not totally figured out what to call Vonn.
Ensign Luna

Vonn was standing motionless and facing the door when she came in. As the door slid closed and the scenery returned to normal, they handed her what appeared to be a pile of leaves and grass… but which on closer inspection was actually the mesh with all kinds of natural materials stuck in and on it. “This is how to use the netting. Affix things form the natural environment to it, but in such a way as to break up your silhouette and the lines of your body. Now…” and he moved to the wall, against which was leaning the rifle he had shown her before. He picked it up, a platform easily five or six feet long, and handed it to her and took the ghillie suit. “Lay down on your stomach. Assume the prone firing position and look through the scope. You will see yourself from above.”

Vonn, RTF CO

Luna nodded in understanding I see. She picked up the weapon. To examine it. ” is this the weapon I will need to use for missions or to heavy I could never fly for long with this.” She said. She remembered that Vonn wanted to make use of her ability to fly.

She put the weapon back where Vonn had it and reluctantly lay down and look through the scope. ” what is the point of the scope” she asked.
Ensign Luna

As she looked through the scope she could see, from the top down, a view of her laying on the ground and Vonn standing over her with the suit. She was plainly visible in the short grass. As she lay on the ground on her stomach, Vonn threw the mesh over her entire body. As it fell over her, her form in the scope seemed to be erased. The lines of her body were disrupted by gasses and sticks laying in what seemed to be random directions, but what on closer inspection was very meticulously planned to seem random and natural. The foliage broke up the straight lines of her body and she hand disappeared… become one with the world around her and invisible to any onlooker.

Vonn, RTF CO

” this is cool but how would you make it work in a tree” Luna asked?
Ensign Luna

“Replace the ground foliage with parts of the tree, of course. You must realize, Ensign. Your role as the sniper is not often one of quick reaction and bold gestures. You need to be methodical. Planned. Slow to move and patient to act. You will not be flying from tree to tree. You won’t be chasing down your quarry. You are our final solution. The RTF’s primary goal is capture and containment. That is no longer your primary role. Yours is decidedly more final. Yours is strictly lethal. When you finger the firing stud on your weapon; you will not be looking to deter, or injure, or scare. You will shoot to kill your target. Each and every time. You will do so if we have failed, and the threat is not contained. Then you will be our saviour, our last line of defense. So… your position must be chosen wisely, with an eye to all of the variables you may encounter. Because if you are not operating alone, as you will a good deal of the time, then you will watching over us; relaying information, assuring our approaches and exits are clear… and eliminating threats we may not be able to. That is why I am giving you a new callsign. On RTF operations, you will be called Archangel. And I expect you to take that name seriously.”

Vonn, RTF CO

” isn’t archangel the name if a ship? ” She asked. She was not thrilled with the idea of killing anyone. She was also unwilling to argue
again that She was usfull in direct combat. Once again starting to feel unwanted on the team. She also started to feel unseen at lest she felt Vonn did not see her for who she was and her abilities.

” Sir I will never let a member of my team family get hurt” She said getting to the ship. Because there were many on this ship she cared about.
Ensign Luna

“You can’t stop it all, Ensign. Eventually someone on the team will get hurt or killed. It is simply the nature of the task before us. You have a role to play. Play it well and you will prevent a number of such things… but not all. Never all of them. The faster you learn that, the better off you will be when it does happen. Now… training is over for the day. Tomorrow… throw rocks. Good day, Ensign.”

Vonn, RTF CO

” hold on why am I going back to throwing rocks? And I will protect everyone you will see.” Luna said stubbornly.
Ensign Luna

Vonn stopped as they walked to the holodeck door. Slowly they turned around and the helmet faced her fully.

“Because that is what you were told to do, Ensign. Do it or don’t, that is up to you. But if this is what you want to do… then throw rocks. It’s quite simple.” and the Breen turned and walked out the door.

Vonn, RTF CO

” ok sir bit I’m going to do some Hand to hand training when I’m done throwing rocks” she yelled after him. Then headed home to take care of Cerenity.

The next day she returned to the holodeck the throw rock. She completed the exercise with 100% acurisey. When she finished she smiled rolling her shoulders and opening her wings slightly.

=/\=Computer run hand to hand combat simulation Luna 3. =/\=

The sarondings changed to a ships corridor. The enemy were three enomeys much larger then her armed with batons. The convered on her the one on the left rasing his weapon to hit her she ducked under his atack and punched him several tones in the stomach as she avoided the atack and got behind him. His weapon came down on the hand of the man that had been behind her. Luna grined ” you boys are to slow” she said.

The one she was currently behind turned and tried to grav her she evaded him easily. Stepping backwards down the hall. Another tried to punch her this time she blocked the atack and centered with a kick to the man’s head. He stumbled backwards. The fight basically continued like this for attest 30 minutes befor she had incapacitated all of her aponits.

=/\= Computer return holode to Vonns rock throwing programs.=/\= The computer complied and she threw rocks one more time. It felt good to have a sparing match after going so long with out one but Vonn would not car about that he would only care about the rocks. She half wanted to throw one of these rocks at Vonns head.

A voice from nowhere and everywhere around her spoke. “If you so desperately wish to design your own training, Ensign; perhaps you should try something a bit harder? I would recommend evasion as more tactically sound approach to fisticuffs, however.” Vonn said. The scene shifted suddenly and without warning.

Luna glared that was it. She had had enuff of Vonn treating her like a week link. She would request a sparing match when this was over. Yes she would probably lose but it would make her feel better.

Luna was standing on a high plateau, right on the edge. The drop was hundreds of feet straight down. A maelstrom of incredibly strong winds swirled around the plateau in all directions, blowing rust-colored dirt and sand and small debris in every direction. The top of the plateau was probably a mile square and covered in low shrubs and gnarled trees no more than six feet high. Rocks littered the ground. At her feet lay a ghillie suit mesh, unadorned. “Your assailants will arrive in ten minutes. They are armed and armored and will be looking for you. Safety threshold has been lowered to sixty percent. If they shoot you, it will hurt. If they find you, it will hurt as well. Good luck, Ensign. I hope you were paying attention.”

Vonn, RTF CO

She quickly go to work making the site look like a bush and braking up her silowet the She crouched behind one of the bushes and waghted.
Ensign Luna

A shuttle appeared in the eye of the storm and then disappeared a few seconds later. The storm disappeared and then the plateau went silent.

A few minutes later, a pair of Naussican raiders appeared. They wore patchwork armor and carried disruptor rifles. They looked around about ten feet apart as they moved slowly clearly searching for sonething… or someone.

Vonn, RTF CO

Luna stayed where she watched the stranger apper. It was quite the mental challenge to force herself nk to move and just watched but she did it.
Ensign Luna

The crunch of boots on ground came closer and closer. A moment later, a large boot landed directly in front of her face and stayed there for a few moments. The crackle of comms came over in a strange language and then the butt of a disruptor rifle set on the ground by the boot.

Vonn, RTF CO
