Casela opened her eyes. She’d been attempting to meditate. She was also thirsty. But even though she was out of sickbay she hurt too much and was far too stiff to get up. And there was nothing within reach to occupy her. She was also groggy from the pain meds and sedatives. She hated it and the feeling was making her panic. Gen was somewhere, and Ryder was on duty. But she was supposed to be asleep, but the feeling of being sedated was one she just couldn’t give in to. She tried. Sleep was better than this state of panic but she couldn’t sleep. She was unable to force herself to give into the grogginess brought on by the meds and so she’d attempted meditating but it didn’t help either.

Quinn rang the chime as she stood outside the quarters. She held a basket of goodies for Cas. She had been very worried about her friend and since she heard Cas was on bed rest after her release from Sickbay she wanted to check in with her before she started her next shift.

“Computer open the door.” The door slip open for Quinn and she would hear a quiet, slightly slurred, “In here,” coming from the bed room. Cas had no idea who was there but she figured if it was an intruder someone would already be in there with her, or the red alert klaxons would be going off. Either way it was a distraction.

Quinn walked into the room and followed the sound of Cas’ voice, she gave her friend, mentor a cheeky grin, “Hey Stranger, think you can handle some chocolate or something?” she asked softly, she hoped her expression didn’t betray her consern too much, she was hoping she wasn’t keeping Cas from resting with her impromtu visit.

Casela grinned tiredly, “I can always go for chocolate.” Her voice was slightly slurred and it bugged her and she had to speak slowly because her ribs and ab muscles were still tender from the surgery. “But really, if you would get me water, I will get you 100 skeins of the galaxy’s finest yarn. The medicine Knox gave me makes me thirsty and well,” the glass on the side table was empty and very small. “And lemon in the water.” Cas tried to push herself up to sitting a little more and maneuver the extra pillows, Gen and Ryder left with her, around her but eventually decided she was just too tired to care. “So how did I rank a visit from you? Surely Cobb is keeping you busy cooking?”
Lt Synthi-er, CNS

Quinn moved forward and set the basket of treats with in easy reach of Cas, she then turned to get the water with lemon, she paused a moment and looked at Cas, curiously, “Lemon don’t you usually take lime in the water?” she asked lightly, as she brought the water over. She reached out a hand, pausing again to look at Cas, “Do you want a hand getting the pillows settled so you can sit up?” Quinn asked softly, she knew Cas generally did not like admitting to wanting or needing help but she offered just in case.

Casela nodded, “I do but the lemon is a nice change after everything. The migraine makes my stomach ill, the inhibitor makes me fuzzy headed, and then in turn upsets my stomach. The acidity of the lemon helps.” She sighed and resisted the urge to growl at the pillow. “I suppose I do need help.” At best she was able to lean back on her hands while Quinn adjusted the pillows. Once Quinn was done she leaned back with a grimaced sigh. “I thought after three days in sickbay I’d at least be able to sit up alone.” But it wasn’t just her ribs that were healing it was her mind as well.

Cas glanced at the basket, with a conspiratorial grin, “you said something about chocolate?”
Lt Synthi-er, CNS

Quinn grinned cheekily at Cas, “Chocolate croissants, chocolate lava cake, and few other things to, do you think you can handle a mochaccino with Andorian chocolate instead of milk chocolate?” She had other things in the basket too but she wasn’t going to show it off until she was certain that she wasn’t wearing Cas out.

The mochaccino sounded divine but she shook her head. “I’m supposed to be ‘resting’ if I take in that much caffeine and Knox finds out he’ll heavily sedate me. But if those are your home made chocolate croissants you can just give me the whole plate. I don’t feel like sharing.” Casela grinned, she’d share with Quinn of course…well maybe. Usually Cobb took off with several while everyone else was trying to savor their first one. These were all going to be hers and she’d brag about it to Cobb later. “Come on sit down. Tell me what’s going on. I’m bored. They wouldn’t even let me have a PaDD to read in sickbay, and apparently they convinced Ryder and Gen I didn’t need one either because everything is out of reach.”
Lt Synthi-er, CNS

Quinn pulled out a small square that she unfolded into a tray that could go over Cas’s lap, then she set the plate of chocolate croissants on it and added the laval cake, “I have already left a plate behind for Cobb, and there is plenty going on but it is all stuff you know about.” she said with a cheeky grin at Cas, as paused and added, “I brought a book for you.” she pulled it out from the bottom of the basket removing the cloth she had put on it to keep the plates and folding tray from scratching the cover. It was a leather bound volume. The title was Lord of the Rings. “I wasn’t sure if you have already read or know this story so I hope you enjoy it”

Casela picked one up and bit into the warm buttery confection, getting only a hint of chocolate at the moment. “And here I thought I could use them to bribe Cobb to make a stop here on his way off duty.” She grinned ‘yumming’ happily over the treat. “Really Quinn, this is outstanding. Thank you.” She took the book looking at it. “I have not read it, but I have always wanted to. Thank you.” She took a moment to appreciate the craftmanship of the leather binding and then opened the book, eyes scanning the first page and dancing. “Good stories are worth their weight in latinum. I will take very good care of it. Maybe, I can even convince Gen to read it with me.” She turned back to her previous question though. “Now, tell me what’s going on with YOU. How are you doing with everything. So many crew changes I’m sure you’ve been run in 20 different directions at once.”
Lt Synthi-er, CNS

Quinn blinked at her a moment and gave a wry grin, “Well the crew changes I don’t mind so much keeps things from getting old.” she bit her lip a moment and said softly, “I upset my folks by my refusing to meet the guy they wanted me to marry.” she wasn’t the only one that had refused her parents ideas of future mates. Aceton and Nathanial had also refused. Her other brothers hadn’t commented as of yet.

Casela nodded, familial obligations were hard. Arranged marriages were…tricky, and without the legalities parents often thought they knew what was best for their grown children. And at times they did, but when it came to…romantic relationships, it was hard for …well.... “I’m sure they mean well, parents usually do, but you shouldn’t be with someone you aren’t comfortable with. No matter the intentions it’s wrong. If it’s wrong for you then it’s wrong for you.” Then she grinned, “So who HAS caught your eye, Quinn?”
Casela

Quinn eyed Casela a moment before she smiled softly as she blushed, “Our Good Captain. Still working my nerve to tell him.” She was mostly worried if she upset him by being too bold, he would have her transferred to another ship.

Casela returned her smile. She took another bite of the chocolate croissant. Oh the chocolate didn’t taste good. But she wouldn’t tell Quinn that. Probably a good over of the anesthesia? She wiped her mouth on a napkin and sipped her water. “How about you make him one of those full English breakfasts he likes. And when he once again asks you what the secret is you say ‘attraction’ or what ever emotion fits?”

Casela

Quinn laughed softly, “Oh that might work.” Though she was still worried he would laugh at her or worse get upset. She didn’t want him getting annoyed with her far from it. She trusted Casela and Cobb more than most she knew and their opinions and feelings mattered a great deal to her. They were in her mind family, she had in her way adopted them to her family and would defend them with her last breath if it came down to it.

Casela smiled at Quinn. “You know even with the telepathic inhibitor I can tell your indecision. You won’t know if you don’t tell him. So the question is can you live with the what if. If you can don’t say anything. If it is a regret you will regret to your death then just tell him. Life, on this ship, us too short.”
Lt Synthi-er CNS

“I know, I know.” Quinn said with a wry grin and looked at Casela, “Do you need some rest?” she didn’t want to over tax Casela when she was supposed to be healing as much as she wanted to be there and help her out she didn’t want to over stay her welcome either.
