As he talked about files there was something very subtle and intangible that shifted about her. Now depending on how good he was at reading people he may not notice, but if he did it was a slight lean from neutrality to respect rather than dismissal. Had he earned her respect, no, that was something very few people ever earned from Casela, but she could respect how he went about his job. Their previous CIO didn’t understand that distinction, he very much believed in the utter truth that a star fleet file provided and could not be swayed from that, and though they did provide insight they were not all truth.

Casela shrugged, “I have read it, but I have no questions. That’s not my job, Lt Cmdr. My job is to determine if you are mentally fit for duty. The details in your file are written by others and over shadowed by their opinions and point of view. Unless of course you are one of those that has adjusted his own file. Now the traditional counseling question would be for me to ask if there is something you want me to ask about. If there is let us proceed or you can make an appointment for later. As for your evaluation, what I want you to tell me, is how do you balance what you must do with the consequences of doing it? We all have demons, regrets, shadows, what ifs, or whatever term you give it, so what do you do to make sure they do not negatively impact your judgement?”
Lt Synthi-er, CNS

The woman seemed to shift slightly, it didn’t seem to be movement although it could simply have been her fixing her seated position. He only considered if it meant anything for a fraction of a second before focusing on her suggestion. “I’ve not had to adjust my own files” He crossed his arms and considered for a moment “For the past seven years I’ve mostly only spoken about my daughter and our relationship. After her mother and I got divorced they moved to New France and I spent four years still working as a tactical officer. When I made the move to Intelligence I moved to be with her. It’s taken some time and work but I believe we’ve built a decent relationship. I spent some time with her on Earth before coming here” His face had softened as he spoke of his daughter, Children had always been one of the few things that did soften him, he even smiled fondly, an odd look on his stony face “I do worry about not being able to spend as much time with her working with the ARU as I would outside it”

CIO

Casela made mental note that he choose to discuss the major focus of his previous evaluations and not to answer her question. They would come back to that. “It is a concern. And it seems our next mission will provide very little time for shore leave. Have you managed to set up a communication relay to speak with your daughter? All personal and unsecured comm have to be relayed through secure points and not sent directly. At least if you can’t make shore leave you can still talk to her. Our previous CSO DaiMon Lazol is one such secure relay. And if you want to send her anything he will do it with grace and discretion.”
Lt Synthi-er, CNS

Adam nodded slowly “I have not had time to set up any specific communications network as of yet. I will take that under advisement thank you” He said sincerely, he would of course set up his own way of sending communications later on but understanding how others performed the same action would be helpful “She will be busy for the next few months at least, she’s started University on Earth. I do have a place where she can send messages whenever I was running silent so getting messages won’t be an issue whenever I figure out a secure way to make a connection to it.”

CIO

Casela nodded, “That’s exciting for her. I’m sure it will keep her busy, most of us get caught up in all the activity at first.” She nodded, “You may find the needed equipment in the CIO office. The previous CIO left without clearing the space. How are you doing so far with this new separation?”
Lt Synthi-er, CNS

Adam considered her question for a moment “Fairly well I would say, she was only a child when she moved to New France but I did miss a few important years, it took time to regain the trust. However, she does understand that if she’ll ever need me I will be there.” He paused “Or if I am indisposed then there is her godfather or her other uncles will be there. Personally, I am pleased with how our relationship has developed”

CIO

Casela nodded, leaving the topic. Solid stable relationships between children and parents, when there had been a separation, weren’t easy and if he had managed to continue a close relationship with his daughter, then it spoke volumes about the man. “How do you mitigate the stress that your position puts on you?”

Lt Synthi-er, CNS

Adam cocked his head slightly to the side, a flicker of surprise came through his river of calm in the emotions he sent out, he rarely considered the stress his job might entail. “I like puzzles, physical puzzles are the most enjoyable but mental ones can be just as rewarding. Other than that I like to read, poetry mostly, I find physical books soothing.” He answered in the same cold calm voice.
