Mwezi loved exploring the unused access corridors and jeffries tubes in a new ship. He’d asked the Captain for permission to explore the… Non-classified back-ends of the ship, and the non-committal grunt he’d gotten in reply had been good enough for him.

He’d managed to pry a structural diagram of the non-classified corridors of the Leviathan and downloaded it to his U.R.I., which he had just in case he got lost. It beeped if he got too near the classified areas, at which point he’d turn around and try a different access area. And of course there were the areas that were too small for his large frame to fit.

Despite the restrictions on his exploration, he’d managed to find several secret stashes of various goodies, from Andorian Wine to Talaxian Star-Brandy. It was a fun exploration. Finally, he found a nook where he could stretch out, so he did so, letting his body relax for a few moments. It was a nice nook, empty of any particular belongings.

His sensitive nose picked up traces of one individual who seemed to frequent the area. Mostly human. Female. It was a familiar smell. Someone he’d interacted with when he first arrived, in that hectic time. Jewel? He tried to remember. She didn’t seem to have been here in a while so hopefully she wouldn’t mind him resting here for a little while.

Trainings, rounds, more trainings, more rounds. The days had run end over end for the last several days that when she realized she was off the roster for a day, she didn’t volunteer for anything.

After her usual work out and jog around the ship, she remembered a place she had found where it was just enough distance from all major hubs of the ship to be silent. Silent from mechanical noise, talking noise and mental noise. She turned a few quick corners, climbed a ladder, and was only one turn away from her small nook when she paused.

Someone was ahead.

Her mind reached out to pick up on mental noise. From emotions to surface thoughts, she would sense it. But nothing was there. Or rather, what was there was blank. There were few on the ship capable of blocking out everything surface. Anomalies not included, that narrowed it down considerably. She didn’t have to remain completely on hands and knees, she could have stooped. But she remained on them for ease of movement and crawled the last few feet to turn the corner and see who was there.

While Mwezi certainly hoped to be undetected in the little nook, the sound of shuffling came to his ears a few moments before the smell reached his nose. Ah. The scent was unmistakable. The same one that filled this space. He stayed quiet, thinking maybe she was just heading around, perhaps he would yet remain undetected.

“Mwezi? Right?” Her voice was as silent as her approach had been. Though knowing his own heightened senses, she doubted she had completely snuck up on him. But like him, she could block herself and he may be a bit surprised she wasn’t registering, save on an olfactory level. And after having sweat as she had for the last hour, it was one of the things she wouldn’t have been able to mask.

Ensign Juliet Anders
“Jewels” RTF

The voice speaking his name as well as the sight of her face peering around the corner dissuaded Mwezi from the notion of remaining hidden. “Indeed. And you are Jewel? I hope you’ll forgive my intrusion into your nook. It was one of the few areas back here where I could stretch out.” As he spoke, he shuffled around slightly and made room.

He looked at Jewel with a relaxed expression on his face, silently assessing her. She was part of the Security Team, he recalled. Some special security stuff as well. Far above his pay-grade, at least for now. He wondered if this RTF/Anomaly stuff existed in his timeline as well. It’d be reasonable to assume it did. Jewel had the right kind of build for a security officer, and there was a depth in her eyes that showed him that she had the appropriate mindset as well.

“It’s a nice little nook here. I like the quiet,” he commented, turning to look at the wall across from him instead of staring continuously at the Ensign.

Jewels slid up into the compartment and rested against the wall opposite him. “Yes, Jewels is fine. It’s Juliet Anders, to be formal.” She half shrugged as if formality wasn’t something she cared to follow too closely. “I come up here occasionally to think. But it’s rare enough that you are welcome any time. It’s a common area, I guess. Well, in as much as it’s not mine to claim, anyway.”

She stretched to touch her toes and then rolled her neck before leaning back on the wall once more, her ankles crossing at the end of stretched out legs. The advantage to this space is it was big enough to do some amazing stretching in, had there not been someone else there. But even with Mwezi’s mass, the small interchange wasn’t that claustrophobic. “So what brought you out to investigate forgotten corners of the ship? You know there are far more spaces you aren’t allowed in on this ship. So be careful where you choose to hole up on occasions.” It was advice meant to warn as well as remind.

Mwezi nodded, grateful the woman wasn’t upset with his presence in her little nook. “I suppose I have a need to explore. I didn’t have much to do, so I found some info on what areas of the ship were, ah, close to classified areas and I’ve been carefully avoiding those places. But there’s a lot you can learn about a ship by fumbling around in the crawlspaces. Although for me those crawlspaces are a little less accessible than they are for members of a smaller race.”

“My goal is to find the sweet spot, actually. It’s my favorite place on a ship, and I’m certain every single ship has one. At least…” he was quiet for a moment. “Well, the ones in my… timeline had them, I’m really just assuming your Leviathan has one. Of course I could turn out to be wrong, or it could be somewhere I’m not allowed to access. But if it does exist, I’m going to find it!”
