“That is correct. I transferred to the USS Chernov as part of a cultural exchange between Starfleet and the Galdori Star Corps. My government sent me along with five other officers to observe and report back on our opinions of Federation policy and behaviour. Chris Taggart was a friend, just as much as he was a Captain. The crew was lively, and good at their jobs. They were somewhat of a family to me, but that family was slowly going away. First Bridie transferring, then Kane falling through the portal… I think Chris was the only one I had left, but he was fading because of Kane’s loss. I don’t know what became of him with my disappearance, but I really hope he’s okay…”

The normally stoic officer found himself tearing up and wiped his wrist across his face, considering the fact that he was the only one left. They were all dead or in another universe, lost to him forever.

  • Mwezi

Adam considered the man coldly as he wiped his tears away, internally he understood that it must be hard to be torn from not only your time but your reality as well. All the people he knew likely never met in this universe if what he said was true. He did allow Mwezi a few moments to gather himself before joining “Have you had a chance to compare what you know of your world’s history to ours, was there a difference before the arrival of this” He looked at the screen again unnecessarily “Nero and the Narada”

CIO

“A little, but I haven’t been able to find much about our history compared to your history. Not with the lack of access I’ve been given. What I can tell you is what I know of my own history. In 2233, the USS Kelvin was obliterated by the Narada, a Romulan Mining Vessel from the future. The only survivors were the inhabitants of a Medical shuttlecraft. From that point, the Federation increased their military presence, becoming less lenient to enemies and ramping up their Deep Space exploration. Which is how they encountered my people in 2245. Regarding the Narada, it stayed mainly out of the way until 2258, when another individual from the future, an “Ambassador Spock,” arrived. He had a powerful gravity weapon, the nature of which I’m not aware, but Nero and his crew used that weapon to implode Vulcan, apparently in revenge for the destruction of Romulus in the future they originated from.”

“It was only due to the actions of the crew of the Enterprise, led by a young captain named James Kirk, that Earth didn’t follow in the same fate as Vulcan. Since then a few interesting things have happened. I joined Starfleet less than a year after the Narada Incident. The Vulcans that were left over after the death of their planet have formed a Vulcan Colony and are doing their best to keep their culture and history alive. I don’t think our Romulans have done much since. Um… That’s the effect of the Narada and her captain on my history.”

Lt. Mwezi

Adams’s only reaction was a blink. He tapped the console a few times and opened up Captain Kirk’s service record, the man was one of the most legendary and infamous Starfleet Captain’s in the history of the service. He quickly read to confirm what he already knew “It seems the effect this Narada had on your history expedited certain events, Captain Kirk did not assume command of the Enterprise until 2265, at the time he was the youngest Captain in the history of the Fleet, a feat he managed to beat himself by nearly a decade” His tone remained mostly neutral but a hint of amusement entered it for a moment. Of course, Kirk would find a way to outshine himself in another reality.

Adam tapped again several times then turned the screen around showing the face of Chris Taggart in his early thirties perhaps, wearing a blue uniform “Was this your Captain Taggart?” He asked, his tone returning to a colder tone as he studied the man.

CIO

Mwezi’s expression softened at the sight of his Captain. “He looks so young,” he said softly, then nodded. “That’s my Captain, yes. He looks much younger than I remember him. There are fewer troubles on his face,” he commented, looking thoughtful.

“May I ask what kind of life he had in this timeline?”

Mwezi, Strange Traveler

Adam inclined his head “He served as a science officer, retired as a full Lieutenant. Federation historical records have him working as a civilian archaeologist for most of his life. He never married and we have no records of children.” He explained in the same steady tone of voice “I’ve made inquires and it seems you never joined Starfleet, remaining within the Galdori Space program as a pilot. I can’t learn more without raising any alarms as of yet but I intend to have a full record soon”

CIO

Mwezi was quiet, trying to decide how much he wanted to know about the life of a man who was him and yet wasn’t him at the same time. His brow furrowed slightly. “It makes sense that he was a pilot,” he spoke, emphasizing the he to make it clear that the Mwezi of this timeline wasn’t him. He hadn’t gone through the same experiences. It was easier to think about it in terms of his doppelganger being someone else. “I had similar ambitions before the Starfleet Exchange program swept me up. I was hoping to pilot a Paruk-Class…” he reflected. They had said he had an aptitude for the joining. That he would have made a brilliant pilot.

“What else do you want to discuss? I’m sure it’s not all history lessons. I’ve spoken briefly with your Captain about the nature of this vessel and her mission, and I’m willing to give it a go. Join the crew officially, so to speak. It’s not like I have anything to go home to on Galdor…”

  • Mwezi

Adam’s eyes narrowed slightly, keeping the alien on the ship was a better idea than letting someone from another universe loose but as a member of the crew… he wasn’t certain yet “Tell me about your duties on your Starship as well as what your talents and abilities are” There was a shift in his tone, very slight but detectable, a graveness entered it, so far he hadn’t seen a lie in the man and Adam was good at seeing lies or evasions.

CIO

Mwezi leaned forward slightly, causing the chair to shift its balance onto two legs. “I was in charge of Security, weapons, and tactics. I was the guy who all the security officers reported to, and I kept them in line and well trained. I was the guy who made sure the Torpedoes and Phasers were in good working order and I made sure the Torpedo Tubes were cleaned and refilled regularly, as well as inspecting the torpedoes we purchased, were assigned, or made in the machine shop were up to snuff. I was also responsible for the weapons/Tactical Station on the bridge, either filling it myself or assigning another security team member to the position. I acted as Chris’s personal guard for many away missions.”

  • Lt. Mwezi

In the back of Adam’s mind he filed away confirmation on a point he had thought of earlier, Mwezi had not only been a close friend of this Taggart but protective as well. Perhaps it wasn’t information he could use right now but who knew what was useful down the line. His only reaction was a slow nod of the head. He pressed a few commands on his console and a soft click came on his right as a small compartment opened out of Mwezi’s sight. He put his hand in and pulled out a type two phaser. He placed the curved weapon on his desk and slid it forward. He nodded his head towards the Phaser “The top two buttons control width and beam intensity respectively whilst the lower is a trigger. In the 23rd century, humans still held onto the old firearm designs but modern-day sidearms are used as often as tools” He spoke as if describing the weather if there was any weather “This is an older model but the design is the same. Sixteen settings from low stun to disintegration”

CIO

“May I?” Mwezi asked, reaching towards the weapon. He wanted to hold it, to feel it’s weight in his hand. A better plan might be to head to a test range and try out the weapon, but this would be nice as well. “It’s an odd colour,” he commented thoughtfully, waiting for confirmation.

  • Lt. Mwezi

Adam tapped a few more times on his console, sending an alert to the Bridge and Security informing them that a weapon was about to be discharged, he then activated a forcefield on the far wall. He nodded his head towards the weapon “Please try it out” He tapped once more and a holographic target approximately 1.8 meters tall and partially opaque stood maybe six meters away from where they sat.

CIO

Mwezi’s face lit up in a grin, and his tail wagged slightly as he stood up and took the Phaser, holding it in his grip and testing his hold on it. It was smaller and lighter than what he was used to and almost felt like a toy in his large hands, but he held it firmly with the grip of a man who was used to handling weapons. He fiddled with the settings until it was set to the lowest stun and narrowest beam. He got into a stance and pressed the trigger, hitting the target a little bit to the left. “Huh… Ours waver right a bit. Guess I won’t have to adjust for that anymore.”

He re-adjusted his grip and shot again, this time hitting the target squarely in the center. He loosened his grip on the weapon and put it back on the desk, nodding to Adam. “Thanks for letting me try it out. The continuous beam is something I’ll have to get used to. Our Phasers shot discrete packets of energy.”

  • Mwezi

Adam had been studying the man carefully as he handled the weapon and nodded as he put it on the desk. “Most modern weaponry uses phaser beam technology but many disruptor-type pistols do shoot bolts instead of beams. Most type 3 can be set to shoot phaser bolts instead of beams. I may be present during your weapons evaluation but training on the holodeck may prove useful. As well as understanding modern weapon controls on the CIC”

CIO

“I might do that. The holodeck thing. It will take a bit to get used to those holographic rooms. Our holographic tech wasn’t as advanced. Could I get access to a manual for the type 3, as well as the Weapon Controls, so I know how to utilize them best without having to experiment?” Mwezi sat down again, stretching his arms forward and cracking his knuckles briefly.

  • Mwezi

Adam tapped a few times on the console “I’ve sent you authorization to access the Standard type 3 phaser manual to start with. The tactical desk can be customized and configured as you need it but I’ve also put in the Academy study material” He paused a moment, his hands clasping together “Before I joined intelligence I was a tactical officer, I’m curious to see how you’ll fair or if you’ll fair well at all” He said rather bluntly

“Thank you,” Mwezi nodded. He’d have some light reading to do over the next day or two. He looked forward to it. “I look forward to making myself invaluable in Tactical, sir,” he said with a small grin. “Theoretically, I might know some tactical maneuvers unheard of in this time and universe.”

After a slight pause, he continued “There are certain scans that can show if a person is a time traveler as well as from another universe, those will confirm parts of your story” He no longer had much doubt that Mwezi was indeed from another time if not another universe, the way he handled a phaser had been the final confirmation “The rest can not be confirmed until I’ve had time to study old files from Galdor if it can be confirmed at all.” the short man leaned forward slightly “I’ll be recommending to the Captain that you and your traveling companion” There was the slightest hint of a question in that “remain on the ship or in ARU hands for the time being until it’s clear you pose no threat to the Federation in general.” He said as if Mwezi being a threat would be a minor inconvenience, not something to be concerned about.

Mwezi hoped the scans wouldn’t be too much difficulty. It had been a great deal of stress trying to convince everyone that he was telling the truth about where he’d come from, and he was glad that Adam, at least, was coming round to accepting it. To be honest, it was hard for him too, but the evidence was stronger in his case. He was in a different year with a different history from the one he knew. It was indisputable. The question in regards to Kula caused another small nod. “I think the English term for our relationship is Partner or Fiancée?”

“I’ll also be recommending that your skills be evaluated and you be given a position as a member of the crew befitting those skills” He didn’t mention that this had already practically been decided already nor did he mentioned that a bad impression might have meant spending a year or six in the brig “Standard Starfleet Intelligence procedure would be to make some sort of vague hint of a threat to either your freedom or that of your friends but it won’t be necessary or enforceable. Worst comes to worst you’ll be remanded into the custody of your homeworld provided you prove harmless, otherwise, it’ll be prison for a few years. The Federation isn’t harsh and we firmly believe in reformation.” He raised a hand forestalling any answer “I sincerely doubt the latter will be necessary as my sense of people is rarely wrong but understand that until proven trustworthy I will keep a close eye on you” He said that almost apologetically if an emotionless practical monotone could be apologetic. “I don’t do standard procedure nor vague hints, simply put if you put the ship or her crew at risk for an unacceptable reason you’ll just wake up in an airlock as it decompresses if you wake up at all” He said it in the same bland yet apologetic tone. “Any questions”

CIO

The discussions about Mwezi being a potential threat made him shudder slightly. He really didn’t want to go to jail. That’d suck, especially since all he did was accidentally traverse universes and timelines. Was that a crime? Perhaps, perhaps not. He sighed. Depended on who was judging. He appreciated Adam’s encouragement that prison was probably a very low probability. “I appreciate your confidence in me, and I can only hope that my actions will support and confirm that confidence. I’m quite literally at the mercy of your Starfleet. You could do anything to me and Kula and no-one would ever know,” He spoke with a slight sense of remorse. “I understand, sir. I don’t think I have any questions, although I do have a request. I don’t know if it’s possible, but would you be able to request photos of natural scenery from Galdor for Kula and I to put up in our quarters? We’ve tried to get some but… well, we don’t exist, so we really haven’t been able to do much in that regard.”

  • Mwezi

Adam inclined his head “That won’t be an issue if our cultural database doesn’t have it ‘ll just requisition it from their Federation Ambassador” He said in a slightly kinder tone “If you are what I think you are you’ll do well. Interdimensional refugees may not be common but l wouldn’t be surprised if there is paperwork set aside or Federation asylum and even citizenship for just such a case” He knew there was such paperwork for temporarily displaced people as well as those frozen in time. Those from the future were usually sent back but sending someone from the past with information was risky. Adam stood up and instead of putting out his hand to shake he lowered his head respectfully and placed right palm to chest “May your hearts beat strongly, and your love grow wide” As he spoke the words he extended his hand out towards Mwezi as if he’d been performing this action all his life. Finally, he pulled his hand back and folded his hands in front of himself.
