On the greatly magnified horizon of the viewscreen, the spatial anomaly finally lurched into view, Cobb’s eyes drawn momentarily to the image like a moth to the proverbial flame.
“Are you suggesting, Mr Raauhl,” he mused, “that these intruders are suffering some form of psychotic delusion?”

As Ryder had expressed so succinctly, destruction of a Federation world, particularly one as significant as Vulcan, could not have been hidden from the Leviathan’s crew. Not even by the omnipotent ARU. Still, current events considered, he found himself leaning in to MacReady and murmuring, “Give me a status report on the planet Vulcan, eh?”

But locking eyes once again with the younger Trill, Zachariah dared to venture, “Or do you instead suspect them to have originated from a time or place where such nonsense could risk making sense?”

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

Now thats the golden goose He thought, “Honestly, it doesn’t make sense for them to stow away onboard or try to infiltrate the ship by coming up with such profound statements. When we found them there was a high level of Tachyon radiation which as we know often is a result of a temporal displacement that said its easy enough to replicate at those levels to fake being involved in a temporal incident.” Ryder let out a long sigh, his head already pounding. “If I was to pull from my own knowledge I would suggest this incident isn’t in fact a time related incident but something more akin to that of the Mirror universe and perhaps another version of ourselves that hopefully for our sake doesn’t involve what we now know is the Terran Empire but a version of Starfleet more aligned to our philosophy of peaceful exploration.” That comment alone almost gave him cause to laugh, since being in Starfleet he’d barely known anything other than peaceful.

“A mirror universe?” Cobb’s eyes widened at the thought. “Like the one where we lost Will Hampton?”
The haunting memory of his own horrific death alongside those of key members of his crew, had established permanent and abominable residence in Zachariah’s troubled mind.

“This of course is all based on assumption and no actual proof, but there isn’t any evidence to the contrary either. I believe if I was to use a human term for our guests situations it would be that their situation is FUBAR.”

“What is it that they want from us?” the captain now inquired, eager to move on from recollections of the ‘other’ Leviathan that had almost ended their own. “And do you believe that we can help them?”

Raauhl, who had seen Cobb’s eyes momentarily glance to the view screen finally decided to do the same, “Well I guess its your time to explain what the hell is that?” He smiled, sometimes the Trill Officer felt that just because they carried the flag of the ARU anomalies were drawn to them like a magnet.

  • Cmdr Raauhl, XO

“Ahh,” Cobb turned again to face the viewscreen, “that, Mr Raauhl, is the Alini anomaly and the last known location of two missing ARU ships.”

At the science station, readings from the deployed class IV probe were beginning to filter back in. For the officer manning that terminal, they would see high density readings for both tachyon particles and also other particles containing largely negative mass.

Adam had listened to the conversation with half an ear, a pair of Catians, or something that looked similar, appearing was an interesting fact but unimportant, the name Nero nudged something in his memory but he could spend time learning about that later. He cleared his throat “Apologies for the interruption, Captain” He did give the first officer a curt nod but continued addressing Cobb “It seems that Admiral William Roebuck classified the information on the anomaly in question. I could use the console in your ready room to contact the man and…” He paused “Request the information” There was no change in his tone but the meaning seemed to shift slightly.

“Roebuck?” Cobb’s entire body deflated, every atom of control and decorum within him evacuating on a soul-deep exhale. William Roebuck had been his friend, his student and his mentor. There was no strength remaining within the Leviathan’s captain to re-imagine the man now as Judas.
“Aye,” his voice barely more than a whisper, raw emotion the primary carrier. “Aye. Contact him. Find out what the hell he thinks he’s playing at.”

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

Adam noted the Captain’s rather defeated reaction to the name and filed it in the back of his mind. “Aye, Sir” was his simple answer and he left for the Captain’s Ready room. He opened a Subspace channel to the Starbase addressed to Admiral Roebuck.

After only a few minutes of conversing with the Admiral, Adam left the ready room and calmly walked across the CIC to the Captain “Sir” He said in a low voice “It would seem that the Anomaly is a distraction. Does ‘The Triangle’ Have any meaning to you” He asked calmly looking towards the viewscreen as if this were a simple report.

“The Triangle?” Cobb echoed, ice-blue eyes drawn immediately to the viewscreen and the Alini system anomaly beyond. “You mean that thing out there?”
He shook his head, scattered memories evading capture like a single leaf against the wind. Of course, Magnusson had not been with them during the starbase briefing, had not heard Roebuck’s own pet name for the phenomenon they had been dispatched to take on.

“Is that what Roebuck told you?” he shifted full focus to the Intel Chief. “That the anomaly is a distraction from our mission? But why?”

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

Adam blinked in mild surprise and a slight frown creased his face. He did not like not knowing especially something so fundamentally basic regarding their mission. He quickly regained control of his face though before speaking “It was an odd conversation, at first it seemed like he was attempting to block me from accessing the files, he simply stated that those responsible for losing the Anomaly had been dealt with as if they already were aware of it escaping. When I pressed to get access he started the ‘Security and Regulation’ speech but something changed. He said something about you being close to a father to him and he could not forgive himself if something were to happen to you” Most times he wouldn’t consider that important to reveal but it might confirm if the admiral was in his right mind or not when said to Cobb “He said it was only set upon us to occupy and distract us so no one would question” He looked at the Anomaly on the viewscreen “The triangle. In the background, I could hear approaching footsteps which seemed to either distract or panic the admiral”
