“I’m not telepathic either,” Kula responded with a slightly wider grin, then calmed herself down. She was getting very enthusiastic about the conversation and she wasn’t sure if Luran was uncomfortable or not. Man, now she understood all those letters Mwezi had sent about having to re-learn non-verbal cues when dealing with humanoids. “I know about Vulcans - obviously. But I don’t think the Federation had contacted Betazoids yet. At least not that I know of, but I wasn’t part of Starfleet so I could have been out of the loop.”

“I don’t remember what year the first contact with Betazoids was in,” Luran said truthfully, “though I suppose it doesn’t matter since you don’t know about them either way. I’ve been to Betazed, to visit my mother and brother. They don’t really believe in lying, because most of them can tell when you aren’t being truthful anyway. I can tell you anything you might want to know about them,” Luran offered. She found her empathic abilities unVulcan-like, but a fact of life, and she’d come to peace with them long ago, so she wasn’t particularly uncomfortable with the conversation.

“Hmm, I can’t really think of any questions. And anyways, I’d rather get to know you than learn about a culture that you may or may not identify with,” Kula replied with a small smile. “I’m not really skilled with reading emotions through body language, but you strike me as being… more difficult to decipher than most. I’ve seen a wide range of emotions on humans, but you are very reserved,” she observed.

Kula, Civvie

Luran raised a brow. “I am a Vulcan. I may be able to sense emotions, but I do not subscribe to the idea of reacting based on them.” She knew Vulcans had emotions, but they were suppressed from a young age, in favor of the well-known Vulcan philosophy of living based on logic. It was no different for her. Even with her abilities, she did her best not to react to the emotions she sensed. To suppress them. But she could acknowledge that the information she gained empathically could be helpful in some situations… sometimes.

Kula was quiet for a little while, trying to determine what could be said in response to that. “I’m more referring to your own emotions, not a reaction to other people’s emotions,” she finally decided on. “Although from what I’ve heard of Vulcans, I assume that it’s about the same?” Personally, she couldn’t imagine not having emotions, or suppressing what emotions she had. Emotional expression was such a large part of her life and culture, the idea of hiding away from those emotions was alien to her. Well, she supposed a lot of what she was experiencing was alien, so that wasn’t that big of a change.

Luran nodded. “It is. I may appear reserved because I do not express my emotions as humans do.” She figured Kula must not have met many Vulcans. Then again, in her universe, Vulcan had been blown up. If that had happened, how many would even be left? To her, having been raised mostly on Vulcan but visited Betazed often, she sort of understood how that would seem alien to Kula. Kind of. Well, she was trying.

“That makes sense,” Kula let out a small sigh, looking thoughtful. “I’m going to get myself a drink, would you like one as well?” She asked, tilting her head slightly as she stood.

“A tea would do,” replied Luran. There was nothing quite like Vulcan tea, it was her favorite beverage. “What will you do aboard the ship? I understand you are not an officer?” She asked.

Kula nodded, then came back with tea for Luran and hot cocoa for herself. It wasn’t quite the same as Ja’nen but it was good enough until they could get the Replicator pattern. That was such a fascinating thing - the ability to make specific drinks and foods just by telling the computer what you wanted. She wouldn’t soon get bored of it.

When she returned, Kula sat down and took a sip before speaking. “I’m not an officer, that’s certain. I was a Civilian Researcher on Galdor, so I suppose that’s my new role here? I’ve spoken briefly with your Captain about my role here and how I can be useful, and it seems as though being a scientific consultant is my job.”
