Juliet barely managed to contain the growl bubbling up in her throat as she turbo lift deposited her on the given floor and she stepped out. She didn’t nod it even acknowledge anyone she passed. She had never been accused of shirking her duties, much less completely ignoring them. She protected the Captain of the ship as she promised she would since arriving. He’d known that. He’d understood. He’d even thanked her.

But not the Commander.

He’d told her she’d neglected her RTF duties. He’d told her she should have left the CO to himself and assisted all the others on the deck in containing the anomaly. Then he’d gone so far as to dismiss her to look after Conrad until the situation was contained.

She paused a moment in her stream of thoughts. Captain Conrad
“Captain Mackenzie!” She reminded herself.

As she rounded the corner, a mental shake ran through her. She had didn’t so much time with him in the runabout that she’d forgotten he was a ranking officer, equal to her CO, hitching a ride to another base. Sure, they had shared things. Folks often did with time stretching on like it had. She knew his favorite color, deep stormy blue. The color she’d wished her eyes were, instead of the deep sapphire jewel blue that granted her her nickname. And she knew he prefers cookies and cream ice cream. And that he laughed at how she preferred plain vanilla.

They had discussed many things. But it has been a fleeing friendship, so she’d figured. She thought she’d only see him in passing till he disembarked. But now, here she was, relegated to be his watcher till things calmed down. Taking a deep breath, she raised her hand to tap the come panel that would alert him to having a visitor. She then took a deep breath, squashed her shoulders, and told herself it wouldn’t be for long. And hopefully the good Captain Mackenzie wouldn’t feel slighted and send her away.

“Come in.” A voice echoed back from the intercom. The doors slid open to grant Juliet access to the quarters, which were obviously standard guest quarters with nothing of note to distinguish them. There was a mostly packed duffle bag next to the bed, only a couple articles of clothing and bathroom necessities were out of it.

Conrad was sitting in informal comfy attire on the couch with one leg crossed over the other. He lowered the PaDD he was reading onto his lap as his attention was placed on Juliet.

“Ensign Anders, uh, Jewels.” He started greeting her then corrected himself. He had insisted that they be informal during the shuttle ride because sticking to protocol under such tight quarters could be tedious and weary. He wasn’t in her chain of command or even on duty, so he reminded himself to relax. “Welcome to my humble abode. How can I help you?”

CO Mackenzie

Juliet entered the quarters. She glanced around and frowned. “You should have been given better quarters, Ca…” she paused and shook her head before relaxing a bit and glancing at him, “I mean Conrad. I’m sorry for that. She looked around a moment and then finally back at him. “Something’s .... ummm… happening right now. I can’t say, though I am sure if you inquired, your clearance would get you the story. All I can say is I’m ordered to see to your safety while it’s being handled.” She knew he’d find out sooner or later, so she coughed up the reason.

“Apparently I messed up. I responded incorrectly to a situation.” The word ran off her tongue like a bad taste in her mouth. “So I was sent ‘out of the way’ here. If you prefer someone else, I would understand.” She fell silent wondering if he had bothered to read up on her when he got here. She had read up on him, as much as she could. And she had liked what she read. He was a fair man, and firm. Her discrete inquiries to a couple folks told her he would go to hell and back to protect those under him. But if you crossed him, he would be more then firm on the reprimand. Something told her her own record of serious demotions, and the lies he wouldn’t realize those were based on, wouldn’t make her appear to ‘wanted’ in his eyes.

Conrad looked at Juliet in confusion. That was a lot of things to be told all at once. Either way he couldn’t let the poor woman stand there looking like she was waiting for a harsh reprimand. So he set the PaDD onto the table and slid over on the couch to make some room for her to sit.

“Come here and sit down Jewels, please. Start from the beginning. We’ll get to the other stuff in a moment. What has happened on the ship?”

CO Mackenzie

Jewels inhaled deeply then released it before moving to the couch to sit beside him. Leaning over, a moment, her elbows resting on her knees before she sat back up again. “I can’t just divulge what happened. I can tell you I prioritized the safety of the CO over reacting to what had occurred nearby. I thought there were plenty of others there to handle it and I was closest to the Captain. The RTF Commander saw things differently. He said I should have left the CO to fend for himself. That he was more than capable. I didn’t see it that way.” She looked at him then, her sapphire blue eyes, the moniker to her nickname, were flat. He’d seen that look before when she had woken from a nightmare on the ship there were on together. She had shut down completely. “So this is his way to keep me out of the way and out of trouble.” Her jaw worked a moment as if trying to swallow something unsavory.

She looked back across the room, unable to look at him. “You deserve to know, as well, that I am an Ensign because Star Fleet Command blames me for the death of those in my squad after our last mission. I was demoted, and sent here. The Levi is my last chance or I’m out. But it seems my idea of duty, and Star Fleet’s, have somehow turned separate ways.” She fell silent. How could it have happened? How could doing what was ‘right’ suddenly be something bad?

Conrad could see the unease, nervousness, and hurt on Juliet as she told told him things that must be very hard for her to convey. He wasn’t a heartless man and their not being in the same chain of command made it easier for him to reach out and take one of her hands in his. “It’s an unfortunate part of service in Starfleet and as an officer that you will lose good people. It will never hurt any less whether they’re the first or the hundredth crew member. I find it helps to remember them and make their sacrifice mean something.” He looked down at her hand for a moment before looking into her eyes with his hazel ones. “From what I’ve learned about you, you would’ve done your best to keep them safe.”

He patted her hand before chuckling. “As for someone to keep me out of trouble, well, they could’ve chosen someone far less agreeable to babysit me. I don’t mind, though how much trouble you can actually keep me out of is another question entirely.”

CO Mackenzie

She squeezed his hand without thinking. The touch, while innocent, she was sure, was also the first kind touch she’d felt since her cousin’s touch. This was different. It seemed to mean more because it had come from a stranger.

But before she could delve more into it, he had laughed at her assignment. Despite the subject turning, she didn’t pull her hand back. “How much trouble are you planning on getting into? If you aren’t gonna get into much, than I am sure I can keep you out of a little. If you plan on being a royal pain and getting into more than a little,” she narrowed her eyes slightly trying to look menacing. The uptick on the corner of her lip made it an epic fail, though. “Then perhaps I’ll just have to become creative and keep you out of a lot of trouble.” She patted the top of his hand, still on her other one, and smiled. This time it was more mischievous than menacing.

Conrad returned her mischievous smile with a lopsided grin. “I’m thinking of freshening up, putting on my uniform, and going for a walk. Where I’m going to end up is anyone’s guess but I had an invitation to the CIC at one point that I had previously turned down. I think I’m going to accept it now. Seeing as you’re my escort, I suppose I don’t mind if you tag along.”

CO Mackenzie

Cocking her head sideways, she narrowed her eyes in curiosity. “CIC? Seriously? I just said there is an event happening on the ship. Something tells me that my protecting you doesn’t mean I’m supposed to allow you to run amuck and land in the thick of it.” She shook her head and the tendrils that were loose from the tight military knot on her head whispered around her face like small coal like lines. “Unless the Captain or XO give you permission, I can’t allow that.” It didn’t occur to her they still had their hands entwined.

Sevreal moments later the chime on the door rating. ” Captain Mackenzie are you there? You have been requested in the CIC ” She called.

Conrad looked more amused at the deus ex door chime that so conveniently provided him with justification for the very thing he wanted. He stood from the couch and, since his and Juliet’s hands were still intertwined, pulled Jewels to her feet as well. “Well it looks like duty calls Ensign Anders.” He said with a grin on his lips but reestablishing their professional boundaries. He disentangled their hands but not before giving hers a last squeeze and pat. “If you wouldn’t mind laying out my uniform and a set of undergarments, I would greatly appreciate it.”

With that he moved towards his bathroom while calling out to the one at his door. “Thank you for the summons. I will be ten minutes as I’ll shower and get uniformed.”

CO Mackenzie

” Seriously Sir, the ship is in danger and you’re going to take a shower” Luna said. Punching the door and emeditly referring to that choice. ” ouch that was dumb” She muttered. Shaking her head.
” This right here is exactly why I never want to be a captain” She muttered. She was already wound tight from the events of the past few hours. This just was not helping and only making it more likely for her temper to flare our of control.

=/\= Luna to Camander found him he insistent on taking a shower befor coming to the CIC=/\= there was very clear agitation in luna’s voice.
Ensign Luna

Jewels was grateful the door opened after the Captain had returned her hand to her. Luna wouldn’t see the exchange. But as the door slid open and Luna stepped in only to turn and punch the door in frustration, Juliet shook her head. “I’ll get him there ASAP, Luna. Go help the CIC. I’m sure you have something better to do than babysit. And since I was assigned to babysit, it seems the ‘child’ needs some kicking.” She smiled and winked at the woman. They weren’t close friends but had been comrades in arms long enough to at least know that both were capable people. “Tell the XO I’m kicking his backside and we’ll be along in a hot second.”

” I would love to however I was ordered to get you and him there and to help you, sorry im just frustrated” she said.
