The shuttle ride had been hard and long. Juliet had taken Captain Mackenzie from the space station to the Leviathan thinking she’s be back at the station a couple weeks later. She hadn’t planned on the XO announcing she’d been transferred back here.

That evening, finally settled back into her quarters, it occurs to her that Captain Mackenzie wasn’t given VIP quarters. A thought occurred to her and she changed into black leggings with a deep sapphire blue tunic that set of her eyes and pony tail of raven hair. After tapping in an order to the mess, she slipped into ankle height black velvet boots and headed out of her quarters.

    • A few hours after having docked, Jewels tapped on the Captain’s door on the Officer’s deck and tugged at the edge of her tunic. In her other arm was a container of food that included a bottle of wine.

Conrad was surprised at getting a visitor so soon after arriving at the Leviathan. He’d had time enough to shower and change out of his uniform and into some comfier clothes, which was barefoot with a pair of soft lounging pants and a tightly fitted shirt. He didn’t think the XO would swing by after showing him the way, and it was unlikely that the holographic doctor wouldn’t came by after being so clearly… irked by Conrad’s response, so who could it be? He moved to his door and pressed the keypad to open it and was surprised to see Juliet.

“Oh Jewels, what brings you by? I thought you might’ve gotten tired of me after a few days cramped in a shuttle.” Conrad smiled to let her know he wasn’t serious.

Barefoot in lounge wear… Now that was definitely a sight she hadn’t expected. Though it crossed her mind that he’s wore sweatpants on more than one occasion in the shuttle when they were relaxing. But the coolness if the environment meant he usually has a sweatshirt on, like herself, at those times.

Swiftly bringing her eyes up from his chest, she laughed. “And here I thought it was me that bored you. I actually came because I figured it wouldn’t cross your mind to pull rank and get pampered a bit for dinner tonight. Rations and minimal replicator abilities are enough to drive anyone batty on long shuttle trips. So I thought I’d offer to make dinner, if you haven’t eaten yet. Simple fair, chicken with veggies and lightly parmesaned pasta? And I’ve got wine but can get something stiffer if you want?” She held out the box in offering.

Conrad’s surprise increased as a grin tugged at his lips slightly. “That’s a very thoughtful and welcome consideration. The shuttle replicator was fine as things went but definitely fine dining. Oh but where are my manners? Please come in. Let me get some plates and such.” He beckoned for Jewels to enter as he turned to walk to the small kitchen area. He grabbed a couple of plates, silverware, and wine glasses before bringing them to the small dining table. As he was arranging things on the table he asked, “So how is settling back in to the Leviathan going? I was the under the impression that you wouldn’t be staying.”

She brought in the container and set it on the table. “Thank you…” As she set out the containers, the steam came off the plates she uncovered. Chicken breasts with peppers and onions, asparagus spears in a Parmesan and butter sauce and pasta in a light wine and cheese sauce. “I made it in the galley because I wasn’t sure you would want to wait.” She laughed and handed him the bottle of white wine. It was a Vulcan vintage about 200 years old. “If you let the cook know, you can use the galley to make your own food pretty much anytime you want. He prefers you let him know a day ahead of time so it’s not overbooked, though.” She laughed.

When he asked about her stay, she shrugged and sighed. She hadn’t really wanted to come back. But here she was…

“It appears I’m reassigned here. My things were actually amongst the crates on the shuttle.” She tried to laugh, but it came out a little shaken and off tempo. “So it seems you are stuck with me.” She grinned and looked up at him, smiling once more as the rest of the food was laid out.

Conrad took the corkscrew remover and carefully pulled the cork out of the bottle. As he poured the wine into her glass, he had a look of concern. “I know you’re trying to make the best of it, but Starfleet usually gives its personnel a choice on their assignments. If you didn’t want to be here I could try talking with whoever forced your assignment and get it changed. It wouldn’t be until after the running silent maneuver is complete though.” He set down her glass gently before lifting his own and pouring some wine into it and likewise set it down. He then moved around to her chair and pulled it back with the intention to help her sit.

She shook her head. “No, it’s all right. They have their reasons.” She shrugged and looked at him. “I’m a soldier. I go where I’m told.”

As he came to help her sit, she smiled, trying not to blush. “I’m guessing, then, that even in all the time in the shuttle, you never looked at my records. Did you? Never got curious how a mere Ensign had so many combat knowledge comments or some with so much knowledge? Thank you,” she settled into her chair and waited for him to be seated.

Conrad went back around the table to take his own seat. He shook his head lightly as he smiled softly at Jewels. “No I didn’t look into your records. I felt that there wasn’t really a reason that I needed to. For one we were travelling companions just for a bit and the second reason was because a woman is allowed some mystery.” He looked at the food on his plate as he picked up a fork and knife. “This looks fantastic.”

Juliet laughed. “Careful, Sir,” she said to tease him. “Someone would think you weren’t a Fleet Mechanic thing like most Captains.” Taking a sip of the wine, she then set her glass down. “Thank you,” she responded to the compliment.

After a bit she took a deep breath. “Well you might as well know. I was busted from Lieutenant to Ensign at my last assignment before coming to the Leviathan the first time. My team…,” she paused a moment to think how to phrase it, “misbehaved.” A small laugh rolled up her throat and she bit it back. “Ok, they did more than misbehave. But despite bit being a part of it, or even knowing about a lot of it, as their Team Leader, I got the brunt of the punishment. I had assumed I’d been sent to the Levi because that’s where everyone knows the misfits go. RTF doesn’t have a high survival rate when it comes to anomalous encounters. I just figured they didn’t wanna kick me out so they sent me here to disappear. But the Levi’s RTF are not the usual crew. They are well trained, worked well together, and most have more anonymous encounters under their belts than should be possible.” She at her fork friend and looked up at him for the first time since she’s started talking. “When I was sent to be security at the station, I thought maybe I was given a second chance. But worth no promotion and ‘grunt work’ basically being my job, I guess not. And now I’m back,” she smiled, though it didn’t quite fill her eyes, “so I’ve given up guessing and just go where I’m told and do as I’m supposed to. I’ll either live out my last career years as an Ensign or I’ll get promoted again, someday. But it’s not worth stressing over anymore. So I’d rather concentrate on a nice dinner with you and not worry about tomorrow.” She say back to and picked up her fork, her usual smiling self once more.

Conrad listened to Juliet’s story quietly while he tucked into his dinner. “I’m honored that you shared your story with me and that you came by to have dinner. I hope that this evening is a happy one that blows away all of your worries.” He smiled back at Jewels while lifting his glass of wine for a toast. “To a nice dinner and fantastic company.”

CO Mackenzie

Juliet raised her glass to his in a toast and winked. “Worries, what worries?” She laughed and took a sip before seeing the glass down. “Well, now that I’ve spilled my guts of non glory to you, tell me about yourself. I know you can’t divulge what you’re doing on the ship. But it’s love to know more about you. I’ve enjoyed your company thus far. Don’t see a reason that we can’t continue.” She took a bite of her chicken and let him think about what he’d impart to her. She was prepared for pretty much anything. But mostly because she figured it would all be classified.

“Oh well, my cover story is still the same.” Conrad said as he winked back after drinking some of his wine. “I’m just hitching a ride for a bit. Starfleet didn’t see fit to allocate me anything faster than a shuttle to Deep Space 13, but I got a hold of some of my contacts to see if I was going near any of our starships. As luck would have it, the Leviathan was along the way and you were heading back with a shuttle. Of course they wouldn’t tell me precisely the route or time estimates, but it beats being in a shuttle for over a week.” He grinned at the thought of dodging that unpleasantness. “As for why they had me going to Deep Space 13, well it’s meant to be a bit of diplomacy with some intelligence gathering. Nothing vital mind you, but the Federation needs the cogs to keep turning in the wheel.”
