Lance was doing work in the containment area he had an old record player beside him that was playing opera music. For some reason most of the creatures contain their enjoyed the music for some reason they were at peace with it. As he completed his work he walked around to the cells that everything was all right before his shift ended.

Lt. Lance Von Hellsing (engineering)

Abigail was on watch, she’d been posted to the Leviathan just after they left the station and she’d barely explored the ship. It was her rotation and instead of sitting couped up in the security room she’d decided to do things the old fashion way and walk the beat so to speak. She’d been halfway through the containment deck when she saw a figure wearing engineering colours. It was normal for the stafleet personnel to visit the decks either through study to to maintain the cell security system so she wasn’t particularly worried. “Good Evening Sir” She called out noting his Lieutenant pips. Abigail was tall, almost 6ft in fact and had an athletic body, brown mousy hair and hazel eyes.

Lance looked up “oh hello there just checking the power levels and checking the maintenance logs” the old Record player still playing opera in the background. “Don’t mind the music for some reason it keeps then Calm”

Abi smiled, “I did wonder what that was.” She started and then stopped a short but respectful distance from the Lieutenant. “Its amazing how music can influence even the most dangerous of things” She mused, “So how are they? The power levels and maintenance logs?” She was making small talk, her job was very boring at time and it was nice to talk to someone who she had only ever seen about.

“Power levels are good and the proper maintenance are up to date” Lance looked at the Record player “I don’t think it’s the actual music I think it is the frequency that clams them” he said as he started to write something in an old notebook he had.

Abigail followed his eyes to the odd looking device which was creating the noise and nodded at his explanation, “That makes sense after all music is mostly about frequency.” She paused when she saw what he was writing in, “Whats that?” She asked not having seen something like it before in her life. It looked like a PaDD but it was made from an odd material and certainly didn’t look like it would work.

Lance held up this notebook “this is my notebook I write things down so I can look into it later” he said with a small smile. As he gave Abigail the notebook for her to look in it.

“You write in it?” She repeated taking the book and holding it in her hands, the first thing she thought was how heavy it was compared to a PaDD. “And how come you don’t use a PaDD this is… so heavy” She explained trying to hold it out stretch but her arm soon became tired. “What do you write in it with?” Abi was clearly interested in the notion of the notebook.

Lance smiled at her “ Believe it or not this is how humans used to keep notes to themselves before electronics” he said as he pulled a pen out of his pocket “and this is a pen it is a small metal or plastic cylinder that I can use ink to write with”

Abigail examined the ‘pen’ “Fascinating! Did they get their Ink from octopuses?” She had heard of Ink before but only that of what was produced by an octopus (a sea-dwelling animal) when it felt threatened and needed to get away. She wondered who on earth thought of the idea to put it into a small tube and use to write with, did it smell? Could it be poisonous? The questions flooded her mind.

At this time the Record player stopped and the things in containment started to stir. He rushed over to it and started the music again.

Abigail waited patiently, waiting for Hellsing to finish what he was doing with the strange music device and answer her question if he so wanted too. She wondered if she was overstaying her welcome.

Lance returned to her “yes they did back then but this is a synthetic ink” he said “ some pins were known to have different colors like red blue black green pink orange“
