After-Action - Engineering

Posted March 8, 2022, 8:46 p.m. by Warrant Officer Jonathan Durheim (Chief Engineering Officer) (William Deaton)

He’d lost track of time in the chaos and work, but he suspected that it had been at least a day or two since he’d last slept. Not terribly unusual perhaps; but he acknowledged that it was a poor habit to get into - stimulant addiction was a real possibility, and withdrawal would wreck his productivity. But he was almost done with the latest round of diagnostics, after literal days of chasing bugs out of the system. Thankfully, only a few had been literal.

Durheim blinked tired eyes at the screen; not quite believing the field of green in front of him. He scowled at the board; and started reaching for the latches. “Stop it, Mr. Durheim. We already checked the board wiring, remember? Get some sleep, we’ll run the certifications. ” The Chief Engineer looked up into the smiling face of NE Rodriguez. “Yes, you are correct Ms Rodriguez; I simply remain skeptical after all this. As if we can not be done… But I suppose we are for now - please send your report to me once you are finished.” More like in ten hours… She thought to herself. The Chief was dedicated to his work - to his detriment at times. Most of the engineering personnel knew this well, and occasionally had to act as his minder - a task that held no resentment. Despite the blatant oddness of the man, he had their respect - he refused to ask anything of his people that he wouldn’t do first.

As he crawled into his bunk, he considered that the ship beyond engineering had changed drastically as well; if not in physical form, in leadership. There was a new captain; and if he had heard correctly, a new XO as well. He should make time to meet them, tomorrow maybe…
