An obviously distracted Lt Jahok made his way through the halls of deck 33 to the office of the CNS. Though he managed to avoid bumping into anyone, it was clear his mind was elsewhere. As though on autopilot he pressed the chime outside the CNS’s door to announce his presence. The Lt had scheduled this meeting ahead of time, and despite his distracted state, he was right on time.

“Come in,” Laural Witley called out, the doors automatically opening to the face she’d matched to her schedule. Coming around her desk, the subdued ever present hum of her grav chair accompanying her, she smiled when her eyes landed on the chief of security. “Hello,” she greeted, “I’m Laural Witley. You must be Lieutenant Jahok. Right on time.”

“It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance,” Jahok said in his usual overly stiff and formal way. The chief spoke as though each word held weight, and that every person he conversed with was worthy of respect and honor. Something apparent in the way he held himself. With both the proud bearing of a klingon warrior, and the spine-straight, shoulder’s back look of the ideal Starfleet officer. His uniform was crisp and without a hint of a wrinkle. His hair a mane of thick, wavy, deep-brown locks tamed to perfection without any wayward strands. Yet, underneath the noble surface of his outward appearance, was the tension of uncertainty and concern.

“Thank you for taking the time to meet with me,” Jahok said as he stepped into the office and stood before the CNS, “I suspect we shall come to reply upon one another in the time to come.”

“I’m always happy to make time to see someone who would like to see me,” the counselor required a suggested for him to take a seat wherever he felt comfortable. “I agree that it will be important for us to stay in contact with one another given the nature of our work and your missions. I have to say, some members of security in my experience elsewhere have not been so welcoming of mental health professionals. I appreciate you being so open to what I have to offer.”

Jahok took his seat in a chair close to Dr. Laural and sat straight-backed and upright. “Just as one takes care of and hones the body, so must they take care of and hone the mind. If you would not go into battle with an unwell body, they why would you enter battle with an unwell mind? I intend to lead my team by example and show them there is no shame in seeking guidance or help.

“With that said I shall follow your lead and direct our session as you deem fit.” He sat little straighter and seemed as though he were preparing battle rather than a counseling session.

Laural nodded approvingly at the offered logic and replied, “I appreciate your willingness to allow me to take the lead, but particularly as this is our first session, I’m much more interested in getting to know you. As such, please feel free to share anything about yourself that you like.”

Witley was just getting to know Jahok, but her initial impression was that he was someone perhaps more comfortable following direction in these sorts of encounters than he was directing things. It was too soon to tell, and she certainly wasn’t going to allow her bias to interfere, but at least a few of the security officers she had interacted with weren’t used to others expressing interest in their inner struggles or feelings. Some people may have assumed people like the security chief couldn’t or wouldn’t reveal such things easily, but Laural had come to expect the unexpected.
