Ensign Pryce wasted little time after dropping off his things, heading straight to the lab. He stayed there for a few hours, much of that time finding the materials necessary for his procedure. Those now lay before him: a mid-sized container composed of an unknown substance, another container labeled “HF 20 M”, a metal ladle, a small cage, a battery or electrical feed of some sort, and a small amount of dilithium. He stood, completely focused, planning his next steps. Hrmm. Dilithium first.

~ Ensign Pryce

Grabbing a pair of tongs from a nearby table, Jackson carefully placed the tiny portion of dilithium into the battery-like receptacle. He then attached the whole contraption to the mid-sized container, pressing a button which popped up a view of the inside of the container. This view now showed a tiny silver object inside the container, visible against its charcoal grey inner lining and central column.

With that done, he stepped back, examining his work for any potential issues. Looks good, he thought. A glance around at the empty room, and he added, and the perfect time of day, it would seem. One hand ventured out to tap the machine’s control panel a series of times, manually overriding its maximum output. With one final tap, the whole thing came to life, and the silver object was seen to rise into the air, beginning to spin around the blackish-grey column in an ever-faster revolution.

Jackson sat back on a nearby chair, waiting for the machine to warm up to its optimum speed.

A few minutes of silence passed until the silver object seemed to disappear altogether, and a few more minutes passed before the screen indicated that it had achieved warp factor 6. At this point, Jackson stood back up, tapping the ‘off’ button on the machine, followed by a few more buttons which saw (or rather, heard) a small escape of air from the top of the containment module. He nodded approvingly at this small gust.

With the metallic object slowing down, Jackson shuffled over to the cage, dragging it over to the apparatus he had assembled. He then opened it, retrieved what appeared to be a common cockroach, and placed it in a small receptacle on one side of the containment module, its walls also lined with some kind of charcoal grey material. The roach began sniffing the walls of its tiny room, until Jackson closed the door and its actions went into the “unknown” category of Jackson’s brain. Why do they sniff around like that? he thought. That container’s sterilized, there’s nothing to sniff. He sat back down, waiting for the object to come to a complete stop.

T’Mara stepped over to where Ensign Pryce was working with his device and the cage. She noted the creature in particular.

“A cockroach, Mr. Pryce?” she asked. “Assuming it is consistent with your project, perhaps you should explain its relationship to your basic hypothesis.”

LtJg T’Mara Michaels, CSO

Jackson jerked, the unusual emotion of surprise crossing his face as T’Mara appeared in what he had thought to be a deserted lab. Not ideal, but plans exist for these things, he thought. “Well, Lieutenant, a cockroach is the most anatomically-suited organism to this experiment that is also considered ethical to perform tests on per Starfleet regulation.”

With that half-answer given and the metallic object now still, Pryce tapped one more button on the apparatus, which saw the opening of a small door within the central chamber, through which the roach quickly scurried. Within moments, the creature began to slow, acting somewhat lethargic.

Alison had been listening to the exchange between the two scientists. She had come into the lab to check on a couple of her plants. Ever since Audrey had sprouted into the full grownin a matter of a couple of days she couldn’t take any chances with the new speciems.

She made her way over to the back of the lab where she kept her hybrids. She scanned each one to make sure it was growing within normal parameters.

She sighed and took a deep breath as she finished her scans. Every thing was normal with her flowers. She wouldn’t have cared if she had another Audrey, she just wasn’t sure if Audrey would like it.

“I’m not commenting on the ethics of experimenting on Terran cockroaches. I understand that many humans have negative feelings and emotions toward these particular creatures,” T’Mara said. “Perhaps I should clarify my question with an example. Assume for the moment that your initial hypothesis dealt with the impact of Gamma rays on marigolds. Experiments on cockroaches would not be a logical approach in dealing with that hypothesis. I am simply curious what your experiments show relative to your hypothesis.”

LtJg T’Mara Michaels, CSO

“Lieutenant, I sometimes prefer to perform experiments with less of a strict hypothesis and more of a thought in mind. In this case, the thought is that tetryon exposure will affect an organism’s reaction to submersion in a substance with a hydronium concentration of 1.1 x 10^-4 Molar. I have previously tested substances with lower concentrations, and am interested in how tetryons affect anatomical resistance.”

With that explanation deemed satisfactory, he tilted the apparatus, causing the cockroach to slide far enough back into its containment module for Jackson to lose the door again and remove the roach, still acting quite lethargic. Gripping it with tongs, the Ensign carried the creature over to the container marked HF 20M, lifted the latch, and dumped it into the mix.

=^= Leviathan science team, this is Admiral Roebuck. Please present yourself at the north-west quadrant of the promenade deck in one hour, to meet your new commanding officer, Captain Cobb. =^=

T’Mara was still chatting with Ensign Pryce about his experiments with cockroaches when they heard the announcement. She took a deep breath.

“We can continue our conversation another time,” she said to Pryce. “At the moment, we need to secure our work in a safe condition and prepare to meet the new Captain. My expectation is that I will not find any insects outside of your work area.”

She glanced over at Lt. Kane.

“Secure your work Lieutenant and prepare to transport to Starbase 237 for a meeting.”

LtJg T’Mara Michaels, CSO

“Yes ma’am!” She said as she closed the enclosure she had been scanning. As she turned to walk away she swore she she saw one of the leafs move. She moved over to where the Ensign and the CSO was standing. As she waited for the Ensign to secure his work she looked over her shoulder at her flowers.
